I’ve always been a fan of Mike Rowe’s unique brand of showmanship—his command of the English language with the ability to wordsmith and deliver a message that’s intelligent without condescension. He placed a pig on a pedestal and treated all of the “dirty jobbers” as equals, with dignity and appreciation.
Mike isn’t afraid to veer “out of his lane” (if there is such a thing) into areas outside his expertise in service of curiosity, conversation and communication. His affection for his parents (and Chuck) is cute and genuine. He’s passionate but playful, appreciates potty humor and Plato simultaneously and isn’t afraid to wave his freak flag high in the air while belting out a 4-part harmony rendition of an otherwise boring advertiser’s message. It’s a celebration of human-ness apologetically on full display without the slick polish of the corporate machine’s need to grind down all of the weird, warty, and wonderful edges to make a product that’s palatable to the widest, most vanilla audience and I like that.
During one of the earlier episodes, I remember Mike and Chuck pondering, and I’m paraphrasing, “what is it about our long-winded ramblings that people enjoy? What are we doing right?”
This. All of this is what we like.
You’re an oxymoron in the best possible way! Don’t think “how” Mike, just do. Didn’t Fred King teach you anything?
With much appreciation, I bestow upon thee five measly stars as requested.
