Now I used to love to fish, but I haven't done it for a few years, not because I didn't want to, but yeah, yeah, sometimes his life happens. But now I'm able to get back into it. So I thought I'd knocked the rust off. So I went ahead and hooked up with a total expert fisherman and a podcaster, Jay, Why don't you go and introduce yourself. Well, there, my name is Jay Angel. I do a podcast called Let's Talk Fishing. Let's Talk Fishing was just a natural progression. I've been a lifelong fisherman. I entered the professional fishing world in eight not eighteen, jeez, No, nineteen ninety seven when I began writing for a local newspaper and that and I'm morphed into guiding and tournament fishing.

1:03 And then I had a radio show, I talk radio show, of course about fishing. And then now, you know, radio shows just aren't that pop larn anymore. So now I do a podcast. That's cool. So I'm assuming you started young. I started fishing at about four years old. Yeah, so and now you're in Louisiana. Yes, I'm in Louisiana, and southern Louisiana is a great place to be a fisherman because if you fish where I live, which is about ninety miles north of the coast, there are baths, there are crappies, and you know, if I go to the coast, there are all kinds of cool fish, like speckled trout and redfish. If you go further out there, tarpin, and I don't catch many tarpa, but you know, there's a lot of There's a lot of tuna and grouper and wahoo, and of course the dolphin, which is a called dorado, right, But all kinds of meat things down there.

1:51 So do you have a preference whether you like salt water or fresh water? Is it just they're both kind of different, though, aren't they? They're both different. They both have their things that I love about them. I like saltwater because I don't have fifty years of experience for that like I did with freshwater. So it's all just I'm still, you know, finding new horizons out there. Well, you grew up up north, didn't you, Yes, I. Grew up in northern Illinois, and I fished Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan and of course Minnesota and Canada too. So I did most of that with my dad. And then you know, when I got out on my own, I started fishing tournaments up in Wisconsin and Michigan and just I had a great time. So bass and walleye up there. Bas and walleye and of course crappy too. And you know in the Great Lakes you have salmon.

2:36 Sure, Okay, do you have any brothers and sisters? I have one sister. She lives in Saint Louis. She has three kids. I have two kids on my own. They're both in grad school. My son's currently pursuing a PhD. And my daughter's pursuing a master's degree. Oh cool, Well they're going to have to keep it test because today is National Siblings Day. Success all right, Now, who knows you better than your siblings? Your brothers and sisters.

What's the biggest fish you ever caught? Geez? Probably the biggest fish I ever caught was a ninety pound halib it up in Alaska, which is we went out of the port of Homer, Alaska, and we were fishing for hell of it, I caught one that was ninety pounds, and it was kind of like trying to pull ninety pound weight up off the bottom. I really didn't enjoy it that much.

4:02 I've actually heard that about howib They said, it's just yeah, ninety pound waight, And they say it's kind of like just pulling in a log or something. Yeah, it wasn't really that much fun. I'd much rather catch a twenty pounds red fish done on the coast, or catch a or catch even a five pound bass. It's just there's more skill involved. They actually fight better pound for pounds. This is gonna sound really stupid. In Colorado, we don't have all the big fish, but I mean we can catch walleye and tro out and all that kind of stuff. I think one of the most fighting fish, kind of like pound for pound, is a little blue gill, and they really fuck. If bluegills got the ten pounds, I wouldn't fish for anything else exactly. All right, let's just going on entertainment. On April tenth, let's go there. Two thousand and three, the number one album was Get Rich or Die Try Him a fifty fifty.

All right, now, I haven't gotten I haven't fished in like five years or something. I'm going back for all these young parents who are coming up, what would you think the easiest way is to start encouraging their kids in to get into fishing. Well, if your city has has a local pond, a small pond that's stocked with bluegills, just buy them a little snoopy or a little Mickey mouse, or you know, some kind of small rod that they can handle. Take them down there and get some small little get some worms, cut them into small pieces, get a small hook and a bobber and cast it out there. Blue gills are more than willing to bite. I have hosted so many events like this where we get the kids out there, we give them the rock ods. We're obsessed with fishy walking around, and we bait the hooks for them. We will even cast them out and sit there and watch the rod, watch their bobbers for them. Okay, okay, real this in. They row it in and when they see that there's something on the end of there and they did that, they are thrilled. And you you know, that's how my dad started meeting. And he says he taught me how to fish it at age four and at by ege seven, I was teaching him things because we live right on a small lake like that. Every day

7:02 when I got home from school, you know, grab my fish and not go to leak. Okay, what about if they're older. Let's say they're in their twenties or thirties and they're looking for a hobby and this sounds good. What do you think their first step would be? Hire a guide. That's the key. I guided for seventeen years, and I taught a lot of people from sixteen all the way up to seventy years old. I taught them how to fish. I took them out there and I said, okay, let's let's talk about your fishing. How much do you know how many times have you gone? I don't care either way. This is just going to judge how I'm going to approach this trip. And you know, if they were honest with me. I sit there and I start at the very beginning, and you know, and we would work our way up to bass and you know even you know, Walleyes or stuff like that.

7:46 Okay, guys, you heard it. Don't start off on YouTube. Go ahead and get yourself a guide. Yeah, get yourself a guide, because you know you're gonna pay on a small inland lake like I got it. I charged two hundred and fifty dollars for a four hour trip in the evening on a Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday, you know, and there weren't that many people out there, so we had the whole lake to ourselves. I could just go out there and go to my favorite spots and put you on fish all night long. And you know, when you think about how much money you're going to spend trying to figure this out on your own over the course of years, you're going to be frustrated so many times because people think, well, how hard can it be. Well, I'll take you out there, I'll show you how hard it can be exactly. You know, I'm not a guide anymore, you know, I retired from that. Now. I fished for you know, my own pleasure. But you know, I did that for so many years, and I taught dozens of people over the years on fish. In fact, one of my guide planes became a tournament partner of mine.

8:35 Well that's really cool. Yeah, Oh, go ahead. We started fishing tournaments together. We start traveling all over to Midwestern you know. Actually we won quite a few We won quite a bit of money together. And he started out knowing nothing, and I taught him from square one, and I told him that's the way I like to do it. You know, then you don't have any bad habits. Well exactly. That's about the hardest part about guidance. No, no, no, I know you saw that guy on the TV. You do that, but knowing that's wrong. Yeah, he's been doing that for sixty years. You know, he knows what he's doing. He can cast that way. I'm going to show you how to do it the way that you should when you're when you're just starting out, all right. This seit happened on April tenth in eighteen fifteen on the island of Sambawa in over in Indonesia, volcano Mount Timbura erupted. Now it's the largest, one of the largest volcano eruptions during human history. Now, people they heard that eruption a hunting are twelve hundred miles away. About twelve thousand people were just killed instantly. Now, it threw so much stuff into the atmosphere that it was actually felt globally.

9:35 In the year eighteen sixteen, it's known as the Year without the Summer. Now it caused massive crop failures all across Asia. Over seventy thousand people died from famine here in the United States, and even snowed up in New England and the Great Lakes and the June and July. So yeah, in the North America and England and Europe all it was called the Year without the Summer. Wow, that's interesting. What else happened on April the tenth, Well, you might not. Think about this as being a major invention. The year was eighteen forty nine. The place was New York City. Walter Hunt invented a safety pin. This was way before zippers and though curl. He started making them, and then he sold the patent for four hundred dollars. You know, safety pins nowadays you can make a lot more than four hundred dollars on that. In eighteen seventy two, the arbor Day was the first Arbor Day was celebrated. This took place in Nebraska. The date was changed later, but that's why we celebrated every April twenty seconds.

10:33 Nineteen oh hteen twelve. They ship backed the Titanic. It set off on his maiden voyage and left sound tapped in England, or I guess you could say the Titanic set off on his final voyage too. Now, all those years on the water, you had to see a lot of bad boat, theoptains or boat just recreational pus I have. But you think the biggest problem is just inconsistent and inconsiderate. Inconsiderate people get on the people get on the water and they think that they don't have any rules. They get out there and they drink like they were at a bar standing there. And you know the thing about boating is danger can come at you from three hundred and sixty degrees and you can't just just look at the one plane, because you know there can be dangerous underneath the water, you know, like dead logs and float a foot under the water. There could be there could if you're on like a Texas reservoir, there there could be trees that were submerged and they could only be one foot under the water. So if you're going seventy miles an hour down there and you hit one of those, you're gonna you're gonna rip your hull apart right or you're gonna rip your motor right off the boat. It's it's a dangerous thing. I've been involved in boating accidents.

11:37 I've seen them. I've rescued people after boating accidents. Yeah, it's a dangerous thing. Guys. You know, the worst thing you can do is drink and go boating, because then if something does happen, even if it wasn't your fault, it is because you've been drinking. And for those who do boating right and everything, that's it's pretty hard to kind of control your boat with your trolling motor and with your feet and on that. No, it isn't. You get used to it. You know, I've been doing that for so many years. It just feels natural to me. I you know, I can control my my trolling motor with my foot are usto. Nowadays they have have little remote controls that you clip to your belt. It's a trolling motor is just something you know, It's just an extension of like driving a car. You know, at first it's difficult and you're you fumble around, but then you know, you get used to it.

12:23 So as a tournament angler and an abbit angler and you you always face on the boat, can you still have fun when you face from the shore? Oh? Absolutely. You know, one of my favorite things the fish foaters from the shore are particularly down here because there's so many there's just so many opportunities to do it down on the coast. You know, I like going out and surf fishing, and you know, people think it's dangerous, and it kind of is because there's a lot of sharks in the water. People don't understand how many sharks there actually are, and they come very close to the to the shore. You just have to respect them, you know, you don't. You don't stand there and and try to grab a fish when it's fumbling around, you know, right at the surface of the water. I've had sharks come up and grab fish off my off my line, you know, right now next to me, and you know you can't outrun them, right, so you just stand there and you know, if you act like food, you might get bitten. Sharks don't eat people. But they do come in and they're chomp chomp, chomp, jomp, chomping, trying to get that fish that they seem struggling. And you know if you're in the way, you're gonna get bitten. And their man, their teeth are awfully sharp.

13:22 You know, I would think about the Louisiana I think the scariest part would have been alligators more than sharks. Alligators living mostly in the swamp. And you don't I respect alligators too. I don't get into their water. You know. I have also had alligators come up and grab fish off my off my line. And you know, when you see an alligator coming towards you can do your best to try to get that fish in because you know you might lose an expensive lure that way. So right nineteen thirty eight, New York they were the first daid to make it mandatory that everyone has to take a blood test before they could get married. It was a tech for syphilis. Yeah. By nineteen eighty thirty four estates the United States had you had to have a blood test to desk for syphilisfore you get married. Now none of them do. Montana was the last one that required blood test and they got rid of it.

Nineteen sixty three, two hundred and twenty miles east of Boston, the nuclear submarine in the USS Thrasher sank and killed all one hundred and twenty nine sailors on board and seventeen civilians that were along for the ride. Nineteen ninety six on Burrow Island off of Australia, tropical cyclone Olivia. They had had the largest wind speed ever measured. That wasn't in a tornado. It was two in fifty three miles an hour. So you used to those cyclones down there. We've gone through quite a flu hurricanes anyway, am you. Oh, I've gone through quite a few hurricanes. Yeah, they're scary. That's just a big windstorm that just doesn't stop, goes on for days. That really screws up the fishing too, it does.

14:43 It does. It pushes the salt water into the fresh water down by the coast, and it kills all kinds of freshwater fish and saltwater fish don't know what to do because they've been pushed in land. Yeah, but it hurts a lot more people, you know, property property, Yeah, and you know you see twisted up buildings for years after a bad hurricane. Yeah, I don't think it does sound too fun there, so when you're guiding. So when you were guiding, I think that'd be a tough job, because I mean, I know some I heard I don't remember who was well of the famous fishermen back in the nineties, he said that the difference between hunting and fishing shows is fishing that say cue the fish. That doesn't always work.

15:24 No, it doesn't work. I always say that. I always say that fish or camera shy because every time they came out and tried to take me, I couldn't buy a fish. In fact, you know, I had some fishing shows say come there with your live well loaded with live fish. You know, well, you know it's it's a business. You know. If I can't if I can't produce fish, I don't get on the TV show. Oh I don't know. So then I get it. Now, Okay, that makes sense. Now, yeah, it actually doesn't. You take a fish out, stick, you stick the hook in it, you send it out. Hey, I gotta buy. So does it matter the type of fish or do you prefer live date or lures?

16:06 It depends on the kind of fish you know, for for bass, I would never use I would never use live baits. I like using lures all around. But you know, I also like to catch fish. So if I'm not on the coast and they're not biting on lures, I'm gonna I'm gonna grab some live shrimp, you know, and put put that on the hook and see see if they really aren't biting. Because sometimes well a lot of times I can catch fish with my bait when I can't catch them on on artificials. But if the best aren't biting on artificial lures, we don't we just go home. Well, it was probably twenty years ago. We were up in South da Good at the Lake, Hawaii and we're going to late We were going to catch us some walleye.

16:50 You know, we're in Colon so it's more trout and we're going to catch some walleye. And I goes, yeah, you got to have leeches, so okay, so we got our leeches. Nobody told us you're supposed to make the share. The leeches are in cold water, a nice water. You have to catch those leases after there when they're full, going oh he's stunt, huh yeah. Do you ever do any fly fishing. I did some flyfishing when I lived up in Alaska for seven I paid big bucks to have a guy teach me how to fly fish, and we went out for steel head Okay, and we caught some just the biggest rainbow trout I have ever seen. Imagine a sixteen pound rainbow trout, you know, oh geez. And it's sober as a chrome on an old and an old Chevy, you know.

17:33 Right, Oh god, that's it. Was born on April the tenth. That was Chevy Wooly's biggest hit. Wasn't it the Purple People Eater? It's not the one long horn, one big guye mystic. He had married to his fifth wife in nineteen eighty five. He had two children, and he died from leukemia in two thousand and three at eighty two. This guy lived at eighty two years old. He had kids from two Geese. Actor Chuck Conners. He was born in Brooklyn in nineteen twenty one. He said six foot five and was a star athlete. He played basketball for the Boston Celtics for a couple of years, and it was during warm ups, but Chuck gets credit for being the first to shatter a backboard in the NBA. He then went on to play pro baseball for the Brooklyn Dodger then the Chicago Cubs, turning that into a forty year acting career, best known for acting on TV's The Rifleman. He had four sons.

So no outdoors? Are you mainly fisherman? But did you grow up hunting too? Oh? Yeah, oh yeah, until recently, I hunted a lot when I was up north. I really enjoyed hunting g because around Chicago there's just so many Canada Geese, I'm two million of them live around Chicago. Then they also have all the migrators that come down from Canada and they follow the Mississippi River Flyway, and I actually lived down on the Illinois River, which is part of one of the offshoots of the flyway. And also I hunted a lot of deer in Illinois because there's just so many opportunities. They have these huge state parks that they allowed the public to come in and hunt at. And if you know how to do it, you know, since I grew up there, I knew how to hunt the public parks. You can really stay safe as long as you stay away from the other hunters because the deer.

20:33 The deer are also trying to stay away from the hunters, right, So if you stay away from them, the deer will run over thinking they're going to be safe. And that's when I get medison. Do you remember that movie The Exorcist? Yes? Actor Maxivan Sidraw He was born in len Sweden in nineteen twenty nine. He had a seventy year acting career then over one hundred and fifty movies. They first d in the United States in those Exorisenis movies. Then he played He played one of the pres in Then He Is Conan, the Barbarian Strange Brew Star Wars The Force Awakens. He had two sons from his first wife. I know you don't go from The Exorcist to Strange Brew very often? Do you take off? Eh oh? He was married to his second wife in nineteen ninety seven. They had two sons, Max. He died in twenty twenty at ninety years old. That was Bobby Smith.

Now he sang with the Spinners until he died in twenty fourteen. Some hits that Bobby sang, where the rubber band man, I'll be around? Could it be that I'm falling in love working my way back to you, babe. Bobby was seventy six and he died from amonia. Actor stevens Agall he's seventy three. He's born of Lansing, Michigan. Started out in a dojo out in California where he was training movie stars how to be in martial arts. So they had him come in and be a stunt man. That led to acting. His first movie was Above the Law and then Under Siege, Hard to Kill on Dead the Ground, Let's be honest. Over the last twenty five years, almost every movie he's made has gone straight to video since twenty sixteen. Since twenty sixteen, so Gaal he has had dual citizenship. Yep, the United States and Russia. Sagaal and Vladimir Putin are really good friends.

The geology department has their Richter As they're goin on the Richter scale, they can actually see the fans that they taken sense the fans pounding up and down in These are concrete seats, right and one hundred and nine thousand people and there's only a two lane road going into LSU.

That's something your daughter's up and gotage probably listened to when they're in night schooling. What was that? Mandy Moore, she's forty one. She was born in Nashally in New Hampshire. He was born in Los Angeles. Made his first movie when he was five years old. He was the Forrest Gump son in Forrest Gump A Little Blank Okay, yes, yes. Then he hit really big when he saw Dead People. Do you remember the sixth Sense? Yes, I See Dead People? Yeah. Then he was in payd Forward AI Artificial Intelligence. Dude is an avid golfer. I guess he's really good out there too. He's never married yet, so I guess that's why he's an avid golfer, and he's pretty good at.

She was born in Westminster and best known for playing Ray and all the Star Wars movies. You know, the the seconds that are worth not the reason of. One have a second set. Yeah, she was also she was also you o Feelia and Murder on the Own Express. She got married two years ago. Well, let's really talk about your podcast. That's a really good show. I don't think everybody needs to get into it. And even if you're only a partial fisherman or you're thinking about getting a fisherman man. He had some really awesome guests to come on that with him.

27:40 You know, that's that's a labor alone. I really I started the podcast with an idea and a cell phone I already had. I called my son and said no. My son was a Master of grad student in linguistics at the time. I said, you must know something about a podcast. I want to get into podcast. Let me call you back. He called me back. He said, well, you want to use pod in your use it for free. Until you get going, you start making some money. He told me, don't expect to make any money right away. Don't expect to make any money. I tried it, so you know, I started it, and yes, I didn't make any money right away, but you know, five years later, I'm still not making a whole lot of money. But you know, I do it for a labor of love. I get to fish with some really cool people because, you know, after the podcast, I asked the people gig fish with me. Sometimes I drive six hours each way just to fish with some guy. You know, right, But it's called Let's Talk Fishing. Let's talk fishing, because I truly am a multi species fisherman. I love the fish. For all those fish, they all, you know. I have probably around fifteen thousand different lures. I just I just love them. People send them to me to try them out, and I promote them for you know, and appreciation for that. I show people a lot of how to use them. I have them on my podcast and we talk about using their their lures and show their lures on my podcast. I just I seek to educate people. Now. The one thing I say about fishing is you absolutely will never learn anything sitting on the couch. But you know a lot of people sit on the couch and watch my podcast.

29:38 That's fine. You can pick up pointers, but you have to take those pointers to the lake, to the river, to the ocean and use them. I try to get people away away from electronics and out on the water. I know that you and I are both you know, communicators. But you use what we teach you, right, exactly, use what we teach you, you know. Just I like, get people away from electronics and get out there and enjoy your life. In fact, I say that every podcast I ended with in your last days and you're sitting there talking to your wife and your deathbed, you're not going to talk about how great of a time you had watching Breaking Bad exactly.
