0:20 Well everyone, I am Jeff and welcome to History and Facto. It's about today. Today is April the twenty second. Now. Last month we had Kelsey Jaer as co hosting. She was the grief coach for dealing with the death of a loved one. Today we're going on the other side today. My co host she is just a cool lady man. She helps you to get through the path of having an eternally ill loved one and walking him down that red carpet to the eternity and she'll help you out there. I can't do her justice though, she's just remarkable. Why don't you introduce yourself there? Amy, Hi, I'm Amy Shaw, And yeah, I walked my beloved husband down the red carpet to the door of eternity, and now oh I am in that space to help other people do the same. We felt like there really wasn't a lot of help for you know, when you get a terminal diagnosis, you're never really planning it. It's not like, hey, when's a good time to get sick? Never? Never, And so we were busy living life. We got this shock of all shocks, and yeah, how do you do that?

1:19 How do you navigate when you've got a terminal illness. Yeah, a subject that needs to be addressed, but really it's so uncomfortable we just don't want to talk about it pretty much. Yeah. Yeah, nobody wants to talk about the end of life. That's hard stuff. Yeah, okay, Well, before we talk about all that, we're going to have fun. Do you know what we're celebrating today? I do. I do National jelly Bean Day. Jelly Bean jelly beans Manny Callas bright Yum yum yum, yum yum, jelly beans, jelly beans my hottay life yum yum, yum, yum yum. I like a green jelly bean and an orange jelly bean, a purple bloomed and yellow jelly bean.

2:09 That's right, it's National jelly Beans Day, one of my favorite days of the year. I really like jelly beans. What's your favorite jelly bean? I think I like yellow the best, but you can have all the black ones. I do not like the black jelly beans. Not a licorice lady huh No. In Boston Williams Shaft. He invented the jelly beans during the Civil War. They were actually the first candy that was sold by the pound. Now You can eat jelly beans all year long, but in the nineteen thirties that's when they became really associated with Easter. Now over the easter is the season we're gonna have sixteen billion jelly beans that are getting eaten. Now, jelly beans, they come in so many different flavors out there, you're gonna find one that you like. I mean some of those wild ones. Have we ever tried the buttered popcorn one?

2:49 Yeah? I like that one. That's kind of surprising, isn't it. Yeah, And we just had Easter, so there's probably some leftover jelly beans laying around that we can scrounge up. That's fine with me. I like my jelly That means. A jellybean war that might hurt. Okay, you're the best selling author too. Let's hear about your book. Yeah. I wrote the book Navigating Goodbye. It is a guide for people blindsided with the terminal illness, just to be that playbook that wasn't there when we were, you know, facing this, to help people with a mindset shift about life and eternity, to shortcut medical learning curve and help people leave a meaningful legacy.

Some people are and we'll boast where you can get her book at the end of the show and all that kind of stuff. All right, let's who's going on in entertainment on April twenty second. Let's go back to there. Nineteen eighty five and one album was No Jacker Required by Phil Collins. ESA for Africa, they had the number one song with We Are the World. The Juds. They had the number one country song with Girls Night Out, My Man, Grooster.

The top movie was Stick Burt Reynolds. He gets out of prison. Now he wants to go see his daughter, but he stops off when helps the friend deliver it back. Well, all hell breaks list and that friend gets killed. Stick Burt Renolds, he just wants to walk away and go see his daughter. Well, those bad guys won't let him. Stars also Candas Bergmann and George Stiegel. Okay, we've talked about how sat you know losing your husband's bad enough. But you guys had ten children.

5:09 Too, we do. Yeah, ten kiddos, four biological and then six adopted. So at your stage in your life, what made you And they're all the adopting ones are special needs kids. Correct, Yeah, they are. So what's what filled your heart to make you, guys go and do that? Well, that's a great question. Actually, because we had lost children. We had lost three babies. Our final loss was full term, and we realized that we were a family who had lost children and there were children in the world who needed families. Basically, you know, it was a calling that we felt from the Lord, and we went after them.

5:49 We brought six of them home in five years. It was a little couconuts. Yeah. Well, one thing though, I think what probably one of the hardest you have to deal with it when you get the illness or the the word that you know it's a terminal illness. How do you deal with children? How do you let them know? Is it complete honesty? Is that the easiest way? You know? That is something I addressed in the book. Yeah. I think it's really important that you give children the respect to include them. I mean, obviously you do it at their own level. But we made a point to deal with it together as a family. And you know, we didn't know, We didn't know what the outcome was going to be. We knew what the doctors were saying.

6:31 The doctors were saying, there's one hundred percent chance you're going to die of this. I mean, obviously they can't predict, you know, getting hit by a train or something, but if it was going to go the way they have seen that this was going to be the thing, but we didn't know that. And so, yeah, we talked about it pretty openly with our kids, I mean, our younger kids. We didn't explain a lot of stuff, but I think it would have been harder to try and hide it. And I've worked with a lot of families and they, you know, try to quote a protect the children by not telling them, and I think that really does that mach a service. Yeah, I think so too. I think kids they can be resilient as long as you know they're loved and they know basically what's going on and they don't have a lot of questions. I think that's probably the best way to do it.

7:14 Yeah, And they take a lot of their cues from their parents, and so you know, the way we walked through it was very honestly, we cried when we cried, and you know, we laughed a lot too, and it was a lot of just trusting God at the same time. So you guys said you laughed a lot. So once you accepted it, I mean there's probably a guilt feeling for you know, you going not you know, and basically, how do you still have fun even though you have this big heavy weight on you? That's a great question. I think we when you have that many kids, I mean, things come up. Kids are silly. We Brian and I were silly people. I think you have to have a good sense of humor, and so there was just I don't know, we went on a I'm just thinking of some of the crazy things that happened.

8:02 You know. We took a trip from Ohio to Colorado, and somewhere around Nebraska, we realized that one of our kids didn't have any shoes, Like, how do we not know that you didn't have shoes? It's like Nebraska, you know. I mean, So there were just things like that that were funny. We just found ways to laugh. We had we had a little hobby farm, and so we had we had a milking cow, and we had later we had sheep, and we had chickens and ducks and rabbits, and you know, there was just a lot, a lot of moving parts. And you can't really live a life like that being too serious, because things go wrong all the time. I do remember having to say don't throw cheese and don't poop in the living room. I mean, if you can't laugh with that, I don't know.

8:50 No, that's probably one of the big things, because your husband actually lasted a lot longer than they originally posted too, and I think probably laughter I had a lot to do with it. Yeah, they told us six to twelve months if we did treatment, he might have six to twelve months. It turns out that the DnaA of his tumor was such that it was very resistant to treatment. But we had we had people all around the world praying for him, and you know, he actually lived thirty seven months and a good fifteen sixteen months of that he had no treatment, and he felt good and we had fun, we really did. But there was always that sense of almost like a dragon flying around behind us, because we knew that we weren't free of that diagnosis, and there was always a feeling of kind of breathing down the back of your neck and you'd spin around and like, did I just feel that?

9:41 Oh? I don't know, maybe not. You know, nothing's there so well that I think that's the perfect attitude. You just got him basically got to roll with it, pray and all that kind of stuff. And except that, but don't forget, you'd still have to keep living. Yeah, yeah, we made some good memories. Let's see, it happened on April the twenty eight or twenty second. I'm sorry, I can't read my own riding here. Oh. In the year fifteen hundred, head Pedro Alvarez Cabral him and his men they were the first Europeans to set foot on Brazil. They landed near Monthay Pascorta. They claimed the whole thing for Brazil, so Portuguese is still the official language of Brazil eving today. M eighteen twenty three. Robert Tires He invented the first inline roller skate that had five wooden reels all in one row, and then it had a wooden saw and you kind of stapped it on your foot. And then he had a metal bar that went over the toe. That was the break.

10:31 You called it the vulito. I bet those people didn't wear knee pads or helmets when they were there. Inline skates did. So that was the first roller skate. Yeah, it was inline. Wow in what year? Eighteen hundreds, eighteen twenty three? Well, they didn't even have paved roads. What were they roller skating on? So they had wooden wheels. I guess, yeah, I guess. So you pulled me behind you your horse on my roller skates. There you go. That's a pretty good idea. Eighteen seventy six, Rush composer Tiskowski he completed the ballet Swan Lake. It is the most popular ballet in history. Have you ever seen it? I have not, but I've seen the Barbie version. I have my daughter I've seen.

11:12 No. I haven't seen the Barbie version or Swanlink, but I have seen Larry the cable guy. He has duck Pond. Nineteen fifteen, in World War One, it was the first time in history that chemical weapons were used in a large battle. It was in Western Belgium Germany. They released one hundred and eighty eight tons of chlorium gas. Yeah, they dumped it on the French and Canadian soldiers. Over five thousand of them died. Wow, so I have some notes here too. So on April twenty second, in nineteen sixty nine, England's dude, Robert Knox Johnson, became the first person to sail around the world NonStop solo. So it took him how many days? Three hundred twelve twelve days? So I'm kind of amazed that he didn't get sunk. You know, sailing you can't really like get away from like big storms. But you know, hey, good for him. In nineteen seventy nine, the Rolling Stones played two sold out stadium benefit concerts in Canada. All the money went to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

12:13 So nice of them. But it turns out the concerts were court ordered after they Keith Richards was arrested here for getting caught with heroin and this was his community service requirement. It's not quite so nice. Okay, So now this this is a little bit funny, I think. In nineteen ninety two, Guadalajara, Mexico, their sewer system exploded all over the city. Like what. It kills over one thousand people, almost one thousand people. It tosses cars, and it flattened buildings. It turns out that there are new zinc coated iron water pipelines that they had just installed were right next to the site these steel gas pipes, and the two metals had a reaction and kaboom, poop for everybody. Oh my goodness. Oddly, the very same day in California, at the Paris Valley Airport, a plane crashed on takeoff. Now, oddly, what's interesting about this plane is that it was carrying sixteen people who were planning on jumping out of the plane. They were parachuters and so they had their parachutes. But it didn't serve them very well, did it.

13:30 That's a what do you call it? Bad karma? I guess I don't know what. Yeah, I think. So if you're going up in a plane, make sure you know what that guy next to you actually did. Yeah. Man, it was a bad day in nineteen ninety two, both the poop exploding and the air it was a big deal. I think I'd rather go with the airplane carast because they'd be over, he wouldn't be covered and all that stuff. Right, Oh goodness. So when you started this walk the red line or walk the Red I'm sorry, it's the red carpet. I keep I don't know why I keep saying that. But when you started, had you done any public speaking before? Then? Yes? I had. Yeah, my first speech was in seventh grade, how to eat an oreo.

14:14 Well, it's a good basis for what you talked about later in life then, right, But in what are your speeches? I was walking as listening to you told that an awesome story about your husband and your six daughters. When did you tell that story? Yeah? Yeah, so we knew that, you know, we had this diagnosis, and so as we were processing life, my husband just, you know, he was just willing to do anything. He loved us all so much, and he said, you know, I'll do anything. You guys need me to do anything. It'll make anything easier. And one of my daughters, my oldest, she had been thinking about something and so she kind of got the nerve up to see it, and she said, Dad, I really was wondering if you would walk all of us girls down the aisle because we know you're probably not going to be here for a wedding. And that is exactly what he did. And our church pulled together.

15:05 They decorated the church. Someone made a wedding cake and we unearthed my wedding gown from nineteen ninety six, and my oldest daughter wore that, and then my mom brought us her wedding gown from nineteen sixty seven, and my next youngest daughter wore that, and then our other younger daughters wore white dresses. They all had veils and they carried flowers. My hunted my husband. That was so weird and slip up. My husband rented a Texedo and he walked each of our six daughters down the aisle. He prayed for them at the end. It was a really precious it's all on video for their future weddings. And actually that oldest daughter is getting married this summer, so it's really exciting. She's going to be able to play that video.

Actor Eddie Albert He was born in Rock Island, Illinois, in nineteen oh six.

16:40 Now before World War Two, he was actually secretly working for the United States Army intelligence. See he toured Mexico as a clown and a high wire wire trapeze artist. Yeah, they were looking for submerses who were hiding down out there in Mexico. Well after the war broke out, he joined the Navy. He actually won a bronze star over there fighting in the Pacific. Came home, he decided to become an actor. He was nominated twice for Oscars for movies Roman, Holiday and Heartbreak Kid. He was also in the movies The Longest Yard. He was the Boarding then he was an Escape from Which Mountain? If you remember that if you're old enough. On TV, of course, he starred with Ava Gabor and Green Acres. Eddie. He married nineteen forty five and they had a son and a daughter. His wife died in nineteen eighty five. Eddie. He died from pneumonia in two thousand and five at ninety nine years old. Oh Wow TV producer Aaron Spelling. He was born in Dallas, Texas in nineteen twenty three. Started out wanting to be an actor. Problem was Aaron couldn't act, so he went in and started creating and producing TV shows that paid a lot better for Aaron. Some of the shows that he created were Charlie's Angels, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Dynasty, Melrose Plays, Beverly Hills, nine oh two, one Oh Heaven, Charmed. I could keep going on, I'm not going to now. He married his second wife in nineteen sixty eight and they had a son and a daughter.

17:51 That daughter is actress Tory Spelling Aaron. He died from a stroke in two thousand and six at eighty three years old. So today is the birthday of actress Charlotte Ray who we heard that wonderful song from Facts of Life. She was Missus Garrett, which actually was a spin off from Different Strokes. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, nineteen twenty six. She acted for sixty six years, pretty amazing.

18:32 She was married once for twenty five years. I was married once for twenty five years, well almost twenty five years. They had two sons, and she died in twenty eighteen and she was ninety two years old. Bat I remember Seinfeld. They were saying, like, this is a show about absolutely nothing. I remember them saying that actress as Stelle Harris was born on April twenty second in New York City in nineteen twenty eight and we all know her best for playing Georgia's mom on Seinfeld, Missus Costanza. I think this is so fascinating. She didn't start acting professionally until her kids were grown and out of the house. Maybe she was like bored and she's like, dude, I gotta do something.

19:28 She was forty nine years old and she decides to go and become an actress. And then she quickly becomes the queen of commercials. And she actually had twenty three national commercials in one year, like she knocked it out of the park. In movies, she voiced Missus Potata Head who knew in the Toy Story movies. She married in the year nineteen fifty three. They had two sons and a daughter. Her husband passed in twenty twenty one, and Estelle died a year later from natural causes, and she was ninety three years old. Lacquer song Song Cow.

Glenn Campbell. He was born in Billstown, Arkansas, in nineteen thirty six. Performed as sang from nineteen fifty eight to twenty thirteen. He had sixty eight songs that hit the charts. Some of his number one songs were the Wichita Lineman, Galveston, Southern Knights, Rhiningstone Cowboy. Now that song actually went number one on the pop chart for a bunch of weeks too. He had his variety show on the in this nineteen seventies on TV for a few years now. Glenn, he had six sons and three daughters. They were spread out between four wives. He'd married that fourth wife in nineteen eighty two and they were together. Glenn. He died from twenty seventeen.

21:12 He was eighty one years old. Hey, we actually found one that was a lie that we can talk about today and he's eighty eight. Jack Nicholson. Jack Nicholson, he was born in Neptune City, New Jersey. So when you think Jack's out there, you know spins. He was born in nepteen. I doesn't say we should say hey, jack happy birthday. Oh. Jackie actually retired from acting in twenty ten. I didn't even realize that. I know, I hadn't seen him for a while, but he had acted for fifty five years before he retired. He was no nominated for acting awards twelve times. For Academy Awards, that's the most any guys that have been nominated. Real Straet She's been nominated twenty one times though. Now Jackie did win three Oscars for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Terms of endearment and as good as it gets. I honestly think his best movie was Batman, when you played the Joker. That's my opinion. Now, Jackie did Mary once. He was married from nineteen sixty two to sixty eight, and they had a daughter. After that divorce, jack Vaut, I'm never doing that again, and he never did. So he had five more kids from four other women. I wonder how I was able to retire.

He was born in Beckenham, England, and actually you can go and hear him because he happens to be on tour. So he's singing songs like wait, let me see here, I love your way? Do you feel like I do? So he actually started out in the band The Herd, and then he went to Humble Pie apparently, and then solo in nineteen seventy two, so you know, he retired and then he came back out of retirement to go on tour, so you can go see him, tell him happy birthday, and let's see here he had a son and daughter from a second wife. He was married to his third wife for ten years and they had a daughter, and there is no mention of his first wife. So sweet lady you're out there, shout out to you. And then also today birthday boy. Ryan Styles was born in Seattle, grew up in Canada. Today he is sixty six years old.

23:33 He started out doing stand up comedy and then he went over to Britain. He got a job on the British TV show Whose Lion Is It? Anyway? Came back to the US to be on the Drew Carey Show. And while he's doing that, he and Drew were like, Hey, let's do our own version. Let's do the American version of Whose line is it? Anyway? I think that's such a funny show. Ryan has been doing it since nineteen ninety eight. He also played Herb on the sitcom Two and a Half Men. He married in nineteen eighty eight and they have three children. Does that mean he's still married? That's exciting. I know we found one that still. I hate to go Ryan, after talking about all these artists and you're an artist yourself, I am. I like to paint. Yeah, what inspires you? Mm?

24:13 I like anything happy. I love color. So I use color kind of maybe more than I should like. I enhance colors and I like to use contrasting colors behind things. And yeah, I just I love pets and I love people. I love painting people, and I love I love making people happy with art. Cool. And yes, it's a sad day, but it's also the day where everything he ever had faith for his whole life became a reality. It's the day that I became his widow. And I think it's kind of a holy day.
