0:18 Well, hi everybody. I am Jeff and welcome to history. In fact, it is about today. Got a real treat for you today. I got one of the hottest stand up comedians out there going might go ahead and introduce yourself there, Adam. Hey, thanks for having me on, Jeff. This is awesome, Adam. He's out there in Ohio talking to us today in the heat back here in Colorado where it's nice and a human free. So, Adam, as a comedian, I always have to ask what got you on stage that first time? It's something I always wanted to do. I always wanted to be a comedian I did. I spend a year doing an improv comedy in college and when I auditioned for it, they only took two out of like the forty or fifty people auditioned for it.

0:59 They only accept the two, and I was one of the two. And I was like, maybe I could do comedy. And so I had always wanted to get up on stage and do and just do stand up because improv you're you're really at the mercy of your team, and stand up comedy you live and die by what you do, what you write. So I'd always wanted to get up and do comedy. The first time I got up, they said do five minutes at this comedy club, and I did three and I bombed horribly. After that, I'm like, I'm the worst person in the world. And then the next. Day I woke up like that was the greatest thing ever. Even though I bombed horribly, that was the greatest thing, and I had. My next goal was the right to write one joke that worked. That was my goal.

1:41 That's cool. You're considered a clean comic. So what made you go in for the clean and not go for the easy kind of joke, you know, with the putty mouthing on it. Yeah, I don't know. Part of it was like I grew up watching watching sciences stand up another guy named Victor Borga as old school. There not a lot of people when young generation won't know who that is. Uh, but my mother enjoyed Victor Borga. I also watched Johnny carbson in that. So I always liked clean comedy and I just liked the intellectual part of it. Uh. So, you know what, I gotta write it. And I'd always wanted to do jokes that if my parents were in the audience. I wouldn't want them to feel awkward, right. Plus, there's there's more money in clean comedy, I was always told, and so I could do.

2:31 I've done corporate gigs and cruise ships. And and there definitely is a lot of money in that in that kind of market. Well, good clean comedy and compared to about the seventies, and it's really made a comeback this century, that's for sure. Oh. Absolutely, Nate Berghansy, it became Gaffigan, and then, uh, you know, science has always been around, but there's Gaffigan became huge. Sebastian Menscoco, I guess you could classify him as clean ish comedy, and then Nate Berghantsy. Like the big names right now. Yeah, but I like I like all types of comedy. I grew up watching Eddie Murphy. Do you ever watched Eddie Murphy? Hilarious? Uh, the exact opposite of clean but hilarious.

3:12 I love Chris Rock, I love Chappelle. Norman McDonald's were my favorites. And very bummed that he passed away because he was so unique and how he did his how he wrote, Uh, there'll be no one else like him. So. Yeah, yeah, what surprises me, is I heard that Bob Saggatt was actually dirty your mouth? Then Red Fox was, Oh, Bob Sagga was dirty. He was from what I heard, he was one of the nicest guys you never met. But he was. Yeah, he was. He was a pretty dirty, pretty blue. He had to go away from that father image from from his sitcom. I guess, yeah, yeah, all right. Today's national Day. It's not for me and you, it's for your wife. Today is National girlfriend Day. Now, guys, you're all off the hook. Nope, it's not for boyfriends now.

4:14 It's for the ladies and their girlfriends. All get together and have fun. Now, girlfriends you might have gotten together growing up together, or you met in college or work or church, sisters and mothers. I guess they can be considered girlfriends. According to the definition, girlfriends enjoy spending time together, supporting each other, celebrating each other's successes, and laughing at jokes that they only know about. So girls. I guess you guys all know each other good enough. You're just supposed to have fun celebrating with your girlfriends. Me and Adam and the rest of the guys. I guess we're just supposed to stay out of the way, don't ask questions, and have fun drinking beer, relaxing with the dog or the cat. I think your wife will go out and have fun today. Her parents are here, so maybe we have someone to watch our three year olds, So maybe she'll she'll get out with her one friend, a couple of friends. I don't know.

5:00 It was our It was our nine year anniversary yesterday, so. Wel congratulations, yeah, thanks so but yeah, so it's some Maybe she'll have fun with the friends. I don't know. She's at work. Maybe it's a fun of friends there. I don't know. Yeah, any nine years. You know what it's like when her and girlfriends get together and you don't want to be sitting there chatting with him, did you? He tied it in nineteen weeks with this on Gipsy all right, Blanco Brown he had the number one country song with the get up. Stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason State Thumb, and Idris Elba. A fan of the Fast and the Furious franchise. Am I a fan? No? Not really? It is good action. But I mean, I'm big. I just Alba fan. I think he should be the next Change Bond. But but they're okay, they're entertaining. It really is just entertaining. Yeah, I think. I mean, like you said, they're entertaining, but I don't think I've gone past two.

And I'm serious, MTV used to play videos. I'm sure a little too young. You probably heard rumors about it, inn't you.

And that was when they stopped about twenty years ago. Yeah, so that's no longer really music TV anymore. Sad. He was able to isolate the oxygen element and it's gas of state. That's why you figured it. And if you're wondering, yes, oxygen is an element. It is number eight on your periodic table. It has the symbol oh. Now, one fifth of our air comes from oxygen. As a stand up comedian and a public speaker, a lot of people have a lot of trouble with getting their breath.

8:58 You know, they talk too fast and they can't reade we naturally do you figure out how to keep your breath going? And pretty much you have to work hard. You know what. My my biggest problem when I first started out, and I at times I still do it. I talk too fast, especially on stage, so I have to really get consciously before I go on stage, I tell myself, you get slow down, take your time, because there are jokes I'll do, and I give I do the punchline, and then I go right to the next joke and then the crowd catches up to it and they get it like, oh okay, because I tend to write I think you think about some stuff and then by the time they caught on, I'm on the next joke.

9:39 So some jokes are like that. So I need to like, I just need to be in the habit of like. Of just sewing down. And that's in everyday life. I think too. I just I seem to talk fast. I don't know what it is. Oh, you've got so much any you just want to get it out. But you I can see that you don't want to really talk over your. Life, right, yeah, so yep. Seventeen ninety three, France, they became the first country to use a metric system. Well they also created of course, it was France who did it. Only three countries in the world did not use the metric system today Liberia, meandmar and the United States. I'm glad. I hope you don't ever go to it. Not a fan of the metric system, okay. Eighteen thirty four Britain they abolished slavery, well kind of, they end up slavery and all their colonies and their territories, but they only freed all the slaves that were under six years old. If you were over six, you had to go into it be an apprentice, and for another four years until eighteen thirty eight, Happy Birthday, Colorado's Day. 12:12 You ever played the comedy works out here? No. I heard that it was such a great club, and I would love to get into the comedy works. I've never really actually reached out to him, but I hear it. It is a great club. Okay, well, maybe they'll hear us and hit you up. That would be great. In nineteen sixty six, at the University of Texas, twenty five year olds Charlton Whitman. He went to the top of the university tower, barricading himself up there and started shooting. Over the next ninety minutes, he shot and killed sixteen people and injured thirty one more. Place they were able to break down the barricade and shooting shot and kill them. Now, the night before that, he actually stabbed his wife and mother did death, and they don't know if this is the reason or not. Eighteen oh three, Mary Lana Lewis, he actually recruited to go co lead the expedition to the Pacific Ocean. Clark he was mainly responsible for drawing the maps and for supplies, so he had to lead all the hunting parties. Now they got back, they made him governor of Missouri the territory, and then after that he was in charge of Indian affairs. He had five children from his first wife. After she died, he married his first cousin and they had three children.

14:37 Clark died in eighteen thirty eight, sixty years old, from natural causes. I heard Lewis. I think that Lewis made him governor. Yeah, he got Preston hung himself right. Well, that's still kind of fishy. They still know what happened with him. They think the people close to him, his family, they even to this day, they don't think he was murdered. Really, he was on his way to Washington, d c. To get a lot of money because he was taking he was baying from the Louisiana Territory basically out his own pocket as the governor, and so I'm going back to get some money. And then he ended up dead in Tennessee. I heard he was going to go tell him who was on the Epstein files.

During the War of eighteen twelve and in eighteen fourteen, Key he watched from a distance as the British shelled the hell out of Fort McHenry. Then they did it all night long, and he couldn't believe it. When the sun came up, the American flag was still standing there. He was so inspired from it he wrote the poem in the Defense of Fort McHenry. Now that guy really popular. Then later on someone added the music to a British drinking. Song to it. Yeah, that's how you got your national anthem. Well, it took a while, went until nineteen thirty one it became the national anthem. Now after the war, hey, he became a lawyer, He got married and they had eleven kids. He died in eighteen forty three, sixty three years old, from clearicy. Now it's a thing to do with your lungs.

But it's my I'm pretty sure I'm adhd. I sat down on right through Steve Martin's book Born Standing Up, which is a fantastic book, and then Anthrow Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. So it's got to read certain books. I got to I get enjoy. I just can't sit and read any book. So well, every doctor Suitz read it to my son almost every nine so I can I crushed those books. Well, trust me, you don't want to deal with this one.

17:26 Writer Herman Melville. He was born in eighteen nineteen in New York City. Of course, he's the most known for writing Moby Dick. Now the book it is based on the real story about the sinking of the whaling ship. The essay now call me Ishmael. It is considered the most famous opening line in the history of literature. Melville he was a successful writer. In eighteen fifty one he released the book Moby Dick. His career went to pot. The book just bombed. It was a huge fail, only thirty two hundred never sold there in his lifetime. Then after he died, of course, it became an all time classic. Now he married, they had four children. He died in eighteen ninety one. Is seventy two years old from heart failure. But yeah, I don't know how it's so big. If I tried to read it once, I've never even gotten halfway through. It's long and boring.

He was one of San Francisco in nineteen forty two, and yes, Cherry Garcia ice cream is named for him. The Dead they formed in nineteen sixty five. They were pretty much just a jam band. Now. Their songs would last like thirty and forty minutes, so they put on a two and a half hour concert. You might hear five or six songs that entire time. That's song I Play A Touch of Gray. Yeah, that's one of the few that were ever put on the radio. Sold over thirty five million dollars, but they made their money from touring. They had that very loyal following called The Dead Hits. Now. Jerry himself a daughter from his first wife, then he just had another daughter, then he had two children from his second wife, married his third wife in nineteen ninety four, then he died the next year in nineteen ninety five or fifty three years old. He had a heart attack while he was at a drug rehab center. Now, the word grateful dead, what it means is it's the soul of a dead person showing gratitude to the person who arranged for their burial. So are you a jam band fan?

You wouldn't rap, and I'll listen to anything. But I couldn't get into grateful dead. I couldn't. But according there, I think you're gonna like this next guy, though, No stay Joe Elliott. He is the lead singer for the band Deaf Leopard. Sixty six years old today. He was born in cheflin England in nineteen fifty nine. He joined a band called Atomic Mass in nineteen seventy seven. Just want to play guitar and they said no, they said we need a singer. He said, all right, I'll sing, but you have to change the name to Deaf Leopard. He had actually written that name out and he came up with it when he was just a teenager, kept it with him kind of in his hip pocket all those years. Now they sold over one hundred million records. Now they tour a lot, but they're kind of slowing down right now because they're the only doing a couple of shows the rest of this year.

I was doing a they had like an old school hip hop concert next to the Funny Bone in Toledo, and uh I met uh I met Tone Lake really nice guy. Sure, And then I walked play Coolio and he still had he was much going bold, but he had a little bit of hair left.

He married once for four years and they had a daughter. Then he had nine other children with nine other women. Why not, right, why not? Well you splay your black and white black and white spotted birds. Well I think I heard you split your childhood between small town in Ohio and then like Perth, Australia or something. Like that, Napole in Ohio and Perth, Australia. Yeah, so first ten years of my life was getting on a plane and flying to the other side of the world. And people are like, was that different. I'm like, now, that's you know, that's what you grew up with, that's what you know. It doesn't it wasn't odd to me.

26:18 I just it was very common to get on a seven forty seven and but at that time they never had direct flights because of what they couldn't make the flight, so there was always like a stopover in Hawaii or Fijii. And uh, I thought it was nice and you got to go to Fiji and everything. But you know, as a kid, you don't really think about that, right, So to me it was very very normal to have that. I knew that it was I never really thought about it, but I knew it was unusual, but to me it was normal. I don't know, it's hard to explain. No, I kind of get it good. Uh but you could have been like carry the Larry the cable guy and got down and came back with it like an Australian accent. That would been kind of cool.

26:59 Yeah, you know it was. It was cool. My grandparents were there, my uncles were there. So do you ever go down Do you go down to Ender anymore? Not since your kidhood? You know. I took my wife and son. Took my wife and son two years ago in November, and I see where like my grandparents also coming places I I spent as a kid, and my passport with Australia, so I've got to the citizenships. So uh but yeah, I got to you know, but they get to stop in Singapore and Tokyo. It's the first time I've been there, which I absolutely loved. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Really uh yeah, very cool though, very cool.

27:41 So do you think the assis would get your humor if you did your active down there? I did some shows down there. Yeah, you know what it is. I think it's good because there you can make fun of stuff and people weren't going to feel bad or I think that's wrong. Again, I don't do anything that pushes the envelope, but like jokes about myself. I do a joke here that people want to feel bad for me. It's basically it's a joke about how my wife, when she was pregnant, she had she had won craving. She just craved other men and she's and like here audiences go most times they go, oh, like they want to feel bad for me, Like, don't feel bad for me. This is this is a joke, this is you know, make make fun of me. This is okay, what do you do? But yeah, so we do a lot of observation.

28:26 You do a lot of observational humor, and like you said, you don't want to offend anybody, So do you have like a filter inside where do you know that, well, this is funny, but I don't want to really talk about it on stage. I know, I just think I try. I don't know. I never want to offend anyone. But at the same time, it is comedy, so you comedy is a push the envelope to cross those lines to see you know, I do I do one that I can't. I can't do it in the South, and I can't do it in very gun friendly places because I think it's a joke about. An anti gun right. But if I do it more of a liberal state and I know the audience is gonna be more liberal, I. Can do it and they're gonna they're gonna. Cheer and clap for it. But it's it's I don't know, I just do. I think it's funny. I want to do stuff like again I'm doing I'm doing clean shows.

29:16 I pretty much do clean shows or you know, even PG. Thirteen, which is fine, but uh, but yeah, I want to keep growing the clean set because when I do another cruise ship, I want to have other stuff I can go to when I do these shows as well as like corporate shows and in theaters I do. I do quite a few theaters, and so I do promote it as a family, clean show. It could be eighteen and up. Sometimes people bring their kids to the show, which I think is unusual, like their children, like they're like the tenuine I did a cruise ship. There were kids in the audience, which that's that's fine, that's expected because. It is a cruise ship. It's a it's a clean show, and people bring the kids and so.

30:00 But sometimes like to do the jokes that really like catch people off guard, like, oh this is really it's really different than what he's been doing, which I appreciate. Did you grow up watching The Cosby Show on TV? I did watch a Cobe show that one I watched that. I watched Night Court. Again Johnny Carson, So all those shows well. And today is actress Tempa's Blitzer's birthday. She was born in nineteen seventy three in Chicago, fifty two today. That'll make you feel old. One, Hey, Rudy, did you play Rudy? No, she played Vanessa. Oh okay, she was the problem. Sol been I know that'tly passed away.

30:40 Yeah, just recently. Yeah. So after the Cosby show, Tempest or Vanessa, she went and got her degree in finance from New York University. Still acts a little bit, but she pretty much does financial stuff. She's been with her boyfriends. Is nineteen ninety three. So I know, in the comedy world with Bill Cosby, is he uh kind of shin or does there be realized he was one of the funniest of all time when he was younger. It's you look at his body of work, like the comedy and the comedy it's off is great, it's funny, but as a guy, he's a DIRTBG. Nobody, I don't know, he's no one really talks about him anymore. I didn't make a joke about it, but but really, to be honest, like no one, no one talks about him ember because he's just such a bad person. And the fact he got out of prison and was going on tour again, it's like, are you serious, really, you're gonna do this? And there are people who still supported him.
