Why don't you go and induce yourself? How's it everybody? Michael? How come? It's great to be here. Jeff looking forward to getting into this with you. Cool. I always asked all the comedians, so what got you on stage that first time? Yeah, dude, it was a bucket list thing for me. For years. I've been saying I'm gonna do this before I die. I finally got up in twenty twenty four. I did it, and I was part of the showcase of like six seven other comedians, and I was like, I did the best, you know. And so I had some friends come and watch and stuff like that, and they confirmed that too without me asking. So I was like, if I can do better than these people who are coming to open mics and whatnot shows regularly to perform, I should just keep doing it. So uh, yeah, man, that's how I got into it. But been watching comedy my whole life like most people, and yeah, so that's that's kind of where it started.

1:27 Dude, And I've heard from a lot, well pretty much every comedian, and they said that once you have to do it, after your horrified and all that kind of stuff. It's one of the biggest rushes you could actually have. Yeah, it's totally true. Comedians often say that there's nothing like it or it's hard to explain. It's totally true. But I have like decades of public speak. I've done like a Ted talk. I've you know, I've been a pastor, so I preached weekly for years, of professor educators, so up in front of people pretty much every day, and so I've got a lot of public speaking. But cons stand up comedy is just a different ballgame, dude. It's really really fun and uh, super challenging. So nothing like it.

2:09 Well that's the I think it's the hardest thing in any kind of in moment, maybe the ones ever, because I mean, like when you were talking to a pastor and as an educator and all that kind of stuff, you're getting up point across, but you're not trying to Hey, make me laugh. Dude, it's right exactly. Yeah, all right, Hey, do you know what we're going to celebrate today? Yeah? I saw you send some things like it's National hip Hop Day. Yes right, I said, hit. You don't stop the rhythm to the band, man, but you say just to the rhythm of the beat. Now what you hear is not a testim rabbit to the beat, and me, the crew and a friends are gonna.

2:51 Try to do your feet. You see, I am to say hello. That's right, it as National hip Hop Day. It was nineteen seventy three today in a wreck room and an apartment building in the Bronx, New York. Now was at his sister's birthday party at Jamaican DJ. His name was cool herk Now. He had borrowed some music from Jamaica and then he mixed it with some New York City street music. He practiced it for over a year and he was just waiting for the right party to bust it out on. So this was the day. It was her birthday party. So he would talk over the songs. He had two turntables going. He would switch back and forth. Then he would stretch out the percussion parts of the songs. And that's when he noticed that everybody would dance the most. And so he called him his b boys and bee girls, break boys and break girls. So yeah, that's how the Olympics work break Dancing got his name Breakdancing, But word just exploded all over New York City. That basically it wasn't called hip hop until nineteen seventy nine though, when some of the like sugar Hill Ging and them kind of came out. So were you ever into hip hop as a youngster, Dude?

3:50 I grew up on hip hop. I think like that is what got me into a love for words and language. Like I listened to a lot of Bone Thugs in Harmony out of Cleveland Masters at like wrapping really fast, twisting words, manipulating syllables, and I loved I still love how they play with language and so that that's kind of a lot of what got me into it. Listened to a lot of Tupac as well. So, yeah, dude, National hip Hop Day my sixteen year old ass for the day off school. So there you go, time the break out, the sweat pants and the spin cap and the sneakers. Dude, I'm a freestyle the rest of the interview. So there we go.

4:34 One thing I can't figure out, maybe you can. You can figure it out from doing all your public speaking. I know, it's just from like doing the show and stuff. I don't understand how they can breathe, because I mean breathing that's so hard to do with. You're told when you're peaking, speaking and published to slow down so you can catch your breath. Right, they just go one hundred miles an hour. Yeah, dude, it's you just learn it. You just you know, it comes from practice. And if you watch, like, if you watch these performers, dude, like a behind the scenes of the tour or something, you'll see too that they they really work on their cardio and they're like in the like dance studio often with their dancers and stuff moving around. So it takes a lot of you know, a lot to build up that stamina.

5:16 So yeah, especially the ones who dance, trying to do this and dance, that's gonna pretty impressive. Yeah, all right, let's he was going on entertainment today in August eleven goes back to you in nineteen ninety one. Do you remember what you were doing in ninety one? Let's see, I was in uh, probably fifth or sixth grade something like that. Well you're a little young yet, but Unforgettable with Love by Natalie Cole was the number one album. Brian Adams had the number one song with Everything I Do I Can do it for you? Oh yeah, true.

My first CD that I bought was the Greatest Hits of Creeden's Clearwater Revival. So I loved some Credence. I love Garth Brooks, and I liked Randy Travis a lot, believe it or not. My first cassette tape that I bought was Brooks and Dun You know the boots and Boogie. Yeah, they were huge. Well I guess you did say you grew up in Kentucky, right, Yeah, yep, so yeah, that's been like a lot of listening to country down there, right. Definitely. The number one book was The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Town. The top movie was hot Shots. It's a parody a Top Gun. We're an unstable pilot. He has to come to grips with his father's ghosts, and he has to save a mission that's been sabotaged by greedy weapons makers. Stars Charlie Sheen, carry El's Valerie galliniro Lloyd Bridges.

I just signed ad for it the other day, and I guess Liam Neeson he's going to be playing the Frank Drummond one. Yep. Well, since we're doing this isn't brilliant you actually do I'm gonna say entertainment, but it's actually pretty uh, I don't know, educational. But you have a really great broadcast. Oh thank you, bro, I appreciate that. Man. Yeah. I run a couple though they're both comedy based.

8:27 Actually run three. So one is a Bible and theology based that's on YouTube. It's through my publishing house called glossa house that's got that's grown really fast. I haven't touched in a couple months. I really took a break through the summer, but that's got a pretty big following. And then I got a comedy one called Messed Up to Setups, and the premise of that is pretty much everything around us is messed up, and we can use it as a setup, you know, for our comedy or to write setups for our punchlines. So well, yeah, I have a lot of comedians come on there. But then I also do a lot of like joke writing tutorials. And then the other podcast, the third one that I run is called the Pro Laugh Podcast. That with my broody buddy Brandon and obviously a play on the words pro life. So we're starting the pro laugh movement where we think, you know, we should be able to laugh at anything, find the funny and everything. So, uh yeah, I just appreciate that man kind words.

I missed those days when you could laugh about everything and everybody went so easily offended, right right, And it seems like when people are offended, their offended for somebody. Else exactly exactly. It gets old, bro, it does. All right, Let's see what happened in the world on August eleventh. Well, in theology, you do you remember the whole Mayan calendar thing that was going on in twenty twelve when this world was supposed to end it. I do remember the Mayan came old enough to remember that, dude, and uh what were they? You know, it was the start of their back to school sales or what you know. Well, according to that Mane calendar, it was August eleventh, thirty one, fourteen BC that the world began. That's when the calendar starts. And if you remember in twenty twelve, that's when the calendar ended. So that's when the world was supposed to end. Well, obviously, well how are you going to spend that? They said, Well, it's not a big deal. It's just like when your car dometer turns over, it just starts over again.

10:23 And this whole time, I thought they were counting down to Labor Day or couldn't wear white afterward? Right on? Yeah, In eighteen sixty six, the world's first roller skating rink opened up, and he guesses where in the world the first roller skating rink would open? Wow? Was it New York? Oh you're pretty close, Newport Rhode Island. All right, interesting, So the first roller rink opened on August eleventh. Nice. The occasion was marked by dads everywhere making fools of themselves. Shortly after. Yeah, yeah, well I don't are they an even roller rinks still around? Dude? They seemed like a dinosaur, like they seem extinct to me. He'll find one every now and then somewhere.

11:05 But yeah, I don't know, because. I remember, like in middle school going to him. They'd have like the school would have a thing. And it was cool because you skate around the ring holding the girl's hand on a slow song, right, and you were really good. If you got a girl who could skate backwards, now you were styling. Then I was the dude holding the wall the whole time, not a girl's hand. So now in eighteen ninety six. Now, even though he was the second to do it, Thomas Edison, he still gets credit for inventing the light bulb. But see, actually a British guy actually beat him to it. But honestly, what good is the light bulb? Honestly? But this dude, Harvey Hubble, now he was the man he actually invented the light. Bull sock it in the pool chain to turn it on and off.

11:45 Right, you know who I think was even better the person who invented the lamp shade afterwards. That's true, So you're not being interrogated every time, all right. It was around in eighteen sixty eight off of San Francisco that Alcatraz Island. They started using it as a military prison. Well over the years they made some imprisoned improvements to it, and today they actually turned it into a federal prison. In nineteen thirty four they started putting their first federal convicts there, believed to be inscapable. That's where the worst of the worst was to be haund because they couldn't get away. Since Gavin's been in office, that's where San Franciscan's go to feel safe, I think have to. Oh Man nineteen sixty five, the Watts riots broke out out there in the southeast Los Angeles. A twenty one year old Marquette Fry He was pulled over by the police and watched just a couple of blocks from his house.

12:36 They pulled them over for reckless driving. When he got out, he failed this field sobriety test. That was seven pm at night. Now his brother was riding in the car with him, So the police told his brother, you know you're close, just go ahead and go home. So his brother walked to their house, told her mom what was going on. Well, she went out to check on Marquette. She wanted to see what was going on with her baby. Well, when she got there, some words were exchanged. He was just sitting in his car waiting to be transported. You didn't like that. Mom ended up attacking the police officer. So once it all kind of went down, the mom, the brother, and Mark sez they were all sitting on the curb and handcuffs. So of course our crowd's going to form. Now the rumors started flying. The crowd got bigger, The rumors got bigger. Now the big one going around circulating was that the mom was attacked by the police, and the two boys jumped into sabr Then the crowd got bigger. Then it turned out that they were all protecting a woman who'd gotten a pregnant woman who'd gotten kicked in the stomach. Well, they just started getting worse and worre. Finally just exploded into a riot. Now the riot lasted six days. It took fourteen thousand National Guardsmen to come help the two thousand Los Angeles police stop the whole thing. Thirty four people were killed, one thousand and thirty two people were injured, three thousand and four and thirty eight people were arrested. And you will probably went whatever happened to Marquett Well, he was convicted of drunk driving. He hitd it in ninety days in the county jail for the drunk driving and for fighting with police when his mom was arrested. His mom got a two hundred and fifty dollars fine. But word has started to get around Watson who started the whole dang thing.

14:01 So all those Fries they switched over, and for the rest of their lives they used the last name Price, that was her maiden name, just to make their lives a little bit easier. Wow. Wow, I didn't know all that. Wow it was a comedian. You're like, oh, you like Ronald Reagan. I think political jokes are funny. I don't do a lot of political comedy, but I think it's hilarious. I grew up watching you know, Letterman every night pretty much and loved his opening monologues, Reid crack jokes on politicians and whatnot. And I like watching Bill Maher and he just shreds politicians and politics. So yeah, I think political jokes are funny. Reg Old Reagan ain't heard about him in a while.

14:42 We'll see. In nineteen eighty four, Reagan he was getting ready to give a weekly radio address that he gave to the country every Saturday morning. Well, he didn't know they were on the air. He thought they were still off. He didn't know they turned anything on you. So he jokingly said, I have just signed a bill outlaw in Russia forever, and I'm gonna start bombing five minutes will Somebody in the booth realized that they were live, so I hit the button, so all anybody heard was what Reagan said, and then dead air. That included the Soviet Union. That's what they heard. So the Soviet military they went into a full alert. Took him over a half hour before they realized Reagan was joking and they'd called the standdown order bombing in five minutes. That's what I'm thinking. BeForever he opened mic man, good night.

15:23 Wow, So you got some shows coming up? You want to let everybody know? Yeah, I got some shows coming up. I am at the Russell Theater in Lebanon, Virginia. Let's see. That would be on the twenty second. I'm in Greenwood, South Carolina. Had good times brewing. On the twenty first. I got a show at an annual church picnic kind of thing coming up in early September. I've been a part of a comedy contest in Asheville, North Carolina area on the eighteenth of August. So yeah, I got that's what's in the immediate future. Do you like as a claim comic? You have a lot more options you can do. You ever do cruises or corporate gigs?

16:06 I haven't done any cruises. I just kind of did a corporate thing for a conference at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. A couple of weekends ago, and that was really fun man. And uh, you know that theologians and linguists and Bible scholars aren't your typical comedy crowd, but that was really fun. I just just roasted for a while, you know, it's just roasted people and things, and it was good. So I enjoy that. Well, I think I don't know, but I would think kind of the theological crowd and all that. I think they they're sophisticated if where they know, if it's you can kind of like make fun of themselves a little bit.

16:47 Yeah, yeah, some of them. But no, they were a great crowd and a couple hundred people probably and it worked. So I was a little, you know, skeptical going into it because I'd never done on a conference or something quite like that, just doing stand up comedy. I'd actually given an academic lecture there an hour before, so it was it was fun to shift from that to stand up. Yeah, it's all your years of lecturing and education and all that kind of stuff. Were you have funny lecture or were you more just I'll leave that from when I do stand it. Yeah, I try to, like I'm very self deprecating, tons of humor, my My kind of biggest fear when I'm in the classroom is I'm gonna make some joke off the cuff that's gonna cost me my livelihood, you know.

17:40 So it's I was always joking and uh yeah, it's fun. I enjoyed a lot cool. All right, let's see it was Hey, let's go do some hip hop and see who was born? Frank Keeperson he was born in Willows, California, in eighteen ninety four. Grew up in San Francisco. One winter night before bed, eleven year old Frank he had made a drink of powdered soda mix and water. He stirred up with a wooden stick, left the stick in the glass and put it on his window sill and went to sleep.

18:23 Next morning he woke up, it was frozen solid. Frank had invented the popsicle. That was his lifelong dream. After that, well, it worked, but when he started selling me called him the epicicle. He made a lot of money and he married him and his wife. They had one son. He died in eighteen ninety three at eighty nine years old. Now he didn't do it, but wouldn't you think it'd be kind of cool if he'd requested to be frozen? I was gonna say he died years later from brain freeze, but yeah, that was an interesting Uh be frozen? Yeah? Loo man in My Little Girls, Oh man in My Little Girls.

19:12 That was Mike Douglas. Yeah, he was waving for my time too. He was part in Chicago in nineteen twenty. Start out as a big band singer. In that nineteen fifties the movie The Cinderella. He's the one who did all the singing for Prince Charming. But he had The Mike Douglas Show. Now it's one of the biggest daytime talk shows in TV history. Ran from sixty one to eighty one. Now, he had If You Were Picture, If you were anybody who went on the Mike Douglas Show. One of his guests was this two year old little boy. He was showing off golf skills at two years old, little boy named Tiger Woods. Uh so it's the Oprah top that who did she discover Mike Mike. He married nineteen forty three. They had three daughters. He died in two thousand and six on his eighty sixth birthday. Hey, he died because he was dehydrated from playing golf.

He was born in for Sales, Kentucky, in nineteen forty six. When he was ten years old, he was already playing the guitar and singing tenor in a barbershot quartet. He's actually out on tour right now. He released a new album. It's got to promote it. It's seventy nine. Yeah. Wow. Some of his hits are Lady laid Down. As long as I'm rocking with you, I'm only in it for the love. They got married in nineteen eighty two and they have two daughters and one son. Now, on your website, you say that basically anything's fair game if it's if it's weird, so is your mind always working then?

20:51 Yeah, dude, all the time. Yeah, I think kind of like in theology but really, I think like in Joe folks, like everything, everything is a potential joke. It's it's it's hard to explain, but that's how my brain works all the time. Yeah. Always are you able to start it? You need to have a pen and pencil way through and write it down. Yeah, dude, the phone has kind of become a lifesaver. I have a whole like database that I've created, and you know, I'm updating that pretty much daily, just like hundreds or thousands of joke premises, all my jokes, that kind of thing. So uh yeah, always always taking notes.

You's got to be like open to everything around you, dude, like seeing it, hearing it, and everything is a potential joke. You know. I would do something like that, except like if I didn't get back to it, like for two weeks, I'd look at what no world was that trying to stay here. Well, sometimes that'll happen if I don't put in detailed enough jokes. But you know, it's kind of a truism that if you don't put it in the you know, the phone or write it down or in the store, it somewhere, it'll leave you and you'll never remember it. So yeah, that's a good habit, I mean, and basically a joke writer. But pretty much anybody, I mean, in business or anything like that, do you never know what idea is gonna bloom?

22:21 Right yep. Now, when most people think of Apple Computers, they think of Steve Jobs. Well, he had a partner with him. He co founded it. When he co founded Apple, Steve Wo's Niak Steve seventy five. Today, most people learned about him when he was on Dancing with the Stars. That he was born in San Jose, California, in nineteen fifty nineteen sixty nine. He was here in Colorado. He's a freshman at the University of Colorado Open Boulder. He got kicked out the people up there and Boulder got a little upset when he acted into the computers or the school's computer system. So he went back home to California, hooked up with Jobs. They started Apple Computer now Woe's niak. He was actually the brains behind the whole design thing that Steve was more of the vision where Wosnak was more of the h that's in both kind of guy wos Nyack his second wife. She was an Olympic gold medal canoeist. They had three kids together. Married his fourth wife in two thousand and eight. So you use your phone out, you use an Apple.

23:15 I use a I use a Google Pixel. Nah. I've never gotten into the Apple side of things, dude. Mac. Nah, never never went down that road. I don't either. And it sounds like it sounds like the NAC people are pretty loyal, and it sounds like you're not Mac. You don't want to go there. Yeah, yeah, I just I've like, you know, messed around with the like computer. It just is completely unintuitive to me, which will infuriate all Mac users. But you know, I've tried, like a couple of times. But nah, just not for me. See, that's one of those things you didn't want to say in front of your class to try and get your class off. Fired it well initially initially due like when I was in college and seminary, there were certain software like program ms that I used daily that you could use on Windows but didn't have a Mac version exactly. So going to Mac wasn't worth it for me because I needed these particular programs. So that was the initial impetus to not go that direction, and then when I tried it, it's like, nah, this is unintuitive.

24:20 To me wholeheartedly. Now, obviously that was the wrestling boot band. Do you remember who their lead singer was? Nah, I don't, Oh. Cogan that was that was the Hopes there. Wow. Yeah, he had him and a couple of wrestlers and his first wife are all on that Bandy was born. The only released the one album though, so that's kind of a bumber. So he actually his first music video was with Dolly Parton back in nineteen eighty three or something like that, him and Dolly Man.

I don't know, I think why I'm older than you, but I think he was definitely the most popular wrestler in the nineteen eighties and early nineteen nineties. I don't know, he might be the most popular of all time, but Rock might be up there too. Yeah. I grew up watching Saturday morning wrestling every Saturday, didn't miss Yeah, so I loved the Hawkster and you know, yeah, just a staple. I remember him and Andre the Giants and dude that the eighties, the early eighties, late or late eighties, early nineties. I mean, just a great time for wrestling. If you were growing up at that, you know that time. But yeah, was born today on August.

I think he did his last match. I think it was in twenty ten, but I'm not sure if he really wrestled in the two thousands or not. Though, So he only released that one biggest TV or biggest movie had to be uh, I guess it would be what was it Rocky three? Was that the one? Ah? Yeah, that slipped my mind. I think you're right.

26:43 Then he has one. I don't know if that's a Christmas staple yet or not, but it's called Santa in Muscles. Terrible title. Oh man, I just. Kind of reader, What the heck is he talking about? Well, for him and his plate friends are running from the police, so he runs into a mall and puts on the Santa suit and he ends up becoming Santa Claus. Oh goodness, what a terrible plot. Dude. Oh my gosh. Did you watch Jgan Knows Best on TV with him and his first wife and his kids? Oh? Yeah, I never watched any of that, dude. No, I never watched that. He's married to that first wife twenty six years, they had that daughter and son, married his second wife eleven years, and he just married his third wife in twenty twenty three. Now. He just died July twenty fourth. He was seventy one years old. Now, they say officially on his death certificate it has him dying of a heart attack. But I guess he hadn't been doing well since early June when he had some kind of surgery or something like that, and they said he never really cut out of it.

He was want to burn upon Trent in nineteen fifty four, stepping out, You can't get what you want. It's different for girls. Is she really going out with him? Those are big Joe Jackson songs. Now, he was actually married to a woman, Ruth for two years now. He said it was a total disaster and he'd never re public come out and explained why his marriage to Ruth was a disaster and Ruth, God bless her, she never spoke about it. And now, I'm not an expert, but I think the reason they had so much trouble is the fact that he's gay. See, once he moved in with his boyfriend, him and Ruth became pretty good friends. Joe. He actually lived in New York City for a long time, a lot of years.

Dude, I'm so thankful for the smoking laws. Man. You know, when I was a kid, you could smoke anywhere, you know, inside the store, inside the restaurant. I'm so thankful can't do that anymore. Well, it's kind of because you'd go to the bar and if you weren't a smoker, boy, everybody knew where you were your clothes. Dude. I was just We were in Italy a couple of years ago, me and my wife, and uh yeah, I mean everywhere you go there it's this, it's the same. There's smoking. We went into a gelato shop, you know, and standing in line to get some gelato and uh, you know, people just puffing smoke in your face and we turned around and walked out. Man, it's just oh, it's terrible.

29:22 I spoiled Americans. We can't even help you. Smoke. I'm thankful that those laws exist. You know. I don't I like it too. I like leno go into the place and not having smoke everywhere and all that. I just the only thing I have. I trouble demanding that a restaurant. I think they are a bar. I think they should be able to choose for themselves. If they want to be smoking or not smoking, then you can choose. But I would go to the I'm thankful, dude, as a comedian, that people aren't able to smoke in the club and in the bar, like you know that they can mess up your throat and you're breathing. As we were talking about earlier. I'm grateful for that. Yeah. Well, and it's I mean, you look at like I don't know who, say, Richard Pryor or like Red Fox or any of those. If you watch those old videos, they're up there on stage and you just see these whiffs of smoke fighting all around them and everything. Right, So yeah, that they would have probably like non smoking things too. Now, the triple crowd of acting it is winning an Oscar, an Emmy, and an Tony Well. Actress Olivia Davis or Viola Davis. I'm sorry, Viola, she's done that.

It's Joe Rogan's birthday. He's born in nineteen sixty seven in Newark, New Jersey. He's fifty eight years old. Now. He grew up totally big into Mark Show arts and kickboxing, taekwondo, all that kind of stuff. He wanted to go pro another so, like pretty much all comedians, Yeah, you start off doing martial arts, right. You know, I've actually been doing muay Thai the last couple of years, but I actually I have not been doing it for the last few months, but it was into it there for a while. So but uh, yeah, it's interesting. You know, Joe Rogan, he's a fascinating dude.

Yeah anyways, yeah, well if you remember, he had on the Sitcom News Radio first and then Fear Factor. Right, that's right. Yeah. I always thought I could do all the stunts on Fear Factor, but I couldn't eat the stuff that they had to eat. That was always I could never eat that stuff. Dude. Ever, Yeah, that's the thing on like the challenge or survivor Fear Factor that would do me in. Dude, I couldn't do that. I couldn't either my gag reffects. We don't need the money that bad.

He's forty two. He's born in Melbourne, Australia in nineteen eighty three. Now he was on a soap opera star out there in Australia, came to the United States, just done pretty well. It's been in like eleven movies where he played Thor. He's also in Cabin in the Woods, a couple of the Huntsman movies, Ben in Black International.
