19 Hello, I am Jeff and welcome to History and Factor. It's about. Today is August the eighteenth, ever. Since we eat me so uggy, I should be saying, anyone. Tell me today is National Fahida's Day. There aren't a lot of songs about Fahida's out there now. Fahidas they started around nineteen thirty Mexican workers on ranches down in Texas. They started using the cuts of meat that we're going to be thrown away, you know, the meat that was really tough, strip steak in that. So they would really tender eyes as they cut into really thin slips and strips and then just seizing the hell out of it.
07 Ended up being really tasty. Nineteen sixty, Sunny Falcon he started selling fijidas for the first time. Yeah, people will finally buy him. He had a little taco fijida stand. It was halfway between Austin and San Antonio. Now, you can make fijitas at home and they taste pretty good, but you know what, they're just so much better at the restaurant when you hear them coming out, all sizzling and all that kind of Yeah, they do that for design. Now, a lot of local Mexican restaurants are celebrating and having deals today. I don't know if too many national ones. I think I heard chilies might be. What have you did? Just enjoy some fajidas today? All right, this is going on to entertainment. On August the eighteenth, let's back to nineteen ninety two. Number one album was Some Game all by Billy Ray Cyrus. Boys to Man had the number one song with Endo The Road Mark Estnut had the number one country song, I'll think of something.
13 Forgive me time and I'll thank you something. I can't say today, and I'm all right, I'll thank you. The top book was Gerald's Game by Stephen King. Top movie was Unforgiven. A retired old Western gunfrighter. He gets with his old partner and some young up and coming gunfighter. They want to do one last job. Is to Vinger Wrong? That took place stars Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, and Morgan Freeman.
54 The movie won an Oscar for Best Movie that year, and Gene Hackman, Yeah, he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for it. Alrighty. What happened on August the eighteenth, eighteen twenty sei Scottish explorer Alexandra Laying. He went all the way across the Sahara Desert. Yet he became the first European to actually reach the fate, reached the fable symbol of tim Buck. Two. That's right, they killed him. That's right. If you went in tim Buck too. It's in Molly today. Eighteen seventy two, Montgomery Ward he issued his first catalog. It was a mail order business that he had going on there. Now you can buy one hundred and sixty three itands through the mail now. He didn't open the first Montgomery Wards store until eight nineteen twenty six. Melt Whitney out there in California. It's the highest mountain in the continuous forty eight states at fourteen thousand, five hundred and five feet, at sixty five feet higher than Mount Albert here in Colorado. Now, when I talk about the first time that mountains are climbed, they're usually a team of climbers. They've prepared for the climb for months or even years. They have a lot of equipment and supplies. Now the way they're going to do it, they have it all detailed and mapped out and everything.
00 Eighteen seventy three, Charles Bogoyle, John Lucas, and Albert Johnson. They were on a fishing trip out there in California. They weren't catching anything. They couldn't catch squats save their soul. So after a couple of days of catch you no fish, they got really bored. Finally they said, you know what, there was this really tall mountain right by where they're fishing. They said, since we're not catching a fish, let's say if we can't climb at the top of that thing. Well they did, if they made it. They got up there and they wrote their names what they took rocks and marked their names with other rocks and all that kind of stuff. So when they got down there, they went and told the locals what they did. So locals all named it Fishermen's Mountain, yep, in their honor. Now, a few years later the government came through and their surveyors and everything like that figured out how tall that mountain actually was, so they renamed it after the leader of the team, Whitney. They came down and locals will say, hey, didn't those fishermen write their names up there? And they said, yeah, what's your point. Nineteen twenty in Tennessee, they were voting on whether or not to approve the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Now, if they approved it, women would have the right to vote. If they didn't, yeah, well, well it was all tied. It all came down to twenty four year old Harry Burn, now the young Republican.
29 He previously in public had said that he was voting no for it. Well, he walked up and cast his vote. He said yes. Shocked everybody, but that meant Tennessee had approved the nineteenth Amendment that gave the two thirds majority. The nineteenth Amendment was now a lot and ratified, and women had the right to vote. Well, after everything settled down, Harry was asked, now, why'd you change your vote? He said, well, I got a letter from my mom and she told me to vote yeste. Vote show Disher. Okay, this shivery. We don't sit boutage like. This shibfday and you know we don't, okay. Who was born on August the eighteenth Virginia Dare. She was born off in North Carolina on Roanoak, Ireland in fifteen eighty seven. She was the first child of your pin parents to be born in America. Now that's all we know about Virginia. Dare say she was with the other rolling out colin Us who just disappeared, Yeah, called the last colony. Nobody has any idea what happened to him.
26 So she probably grew up as assimilating into a North American tribe, or she grew up in space after being taken by aliens. The Lewis and Lewis and Clark Meriwether Lewis he was born on a plantation in Albert Marie County in Virginia in seventeen seventy four. Now Clark he was responsible for the logistics and supplies and stuff. Louis He was the one leading whole expedition. So they went to explore what they'd bought in the Louisiana purchase and go all the way to the Pacific Ocean, whether we owned it or not. Of course, the expedition was a success. They traveled eight thousand and two miles in two years, four months and ten days. Now and after that Lewis he's made venue of the Louisiana territory. That was in eighteen oh seven. By eighteen oh nine, the United States government hadn't given him any money, so he is paying for everything right out of his own pocket, and now he's getting into deep debt. So he had it off for Washington, d C. To get them to pony up. Well, he stopped to stay the night one night, and it was about seventy miles southwest of Nashville. Now officially he committed suicide there. Yeah. See, he was a heavy drinker and he was in debt, and everybody just assumed he pulled the trigger on himself, not his sister, though she never bought it. She fought for years to try and get the truth. Took forty years, but they finally exhumed his body, so they dug him up, and his second autopsy it basically said, well, if he committed suicide, he shot himself in the stomach, then he shot himself in the head, and then he slid his own throat. Merriweather, he was thirty five years old when he committed suicide. Right.
00 The first Miss America in America in history. Her name was Margaret Gorman. She was born in Washington, D C. In nineteen oh five, nineteen twenty one, she was sixteen years old, and she won that very first Miss America pageant. Now, the winner was decided fifty percent by the judges and fifty percent by the audience applause. Now you're probably thinking she must have been smoking hot and good looking. I would say she's more kind of cute. So you have to remember she was sixteen, so she weighed one hundred and eight pounds. Her measurements were thirty, twenty five and thirty two. He was only nominated for acting once, and that was for The Sting. Some movies that he acted in that you might have forgotten about were Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, All the President's Men, The Natural, The Last Castle Night. In twenty eighteen, after he released his last movie, It's called The Old Man in the Gun, as he was going down the red carpet, so this is it. I'm retiring. He knows that. Shortly after he said, you know, I'm really sorry about saying that. I didn't mean it. So he's done a couple of movies since then.
35 Now. He created the Sundance Film Festival in nineteen seventy eight. Patrick he started smoking when he's seventeen years old. At one point he smoked sixty cigarettes a day. Now, you'd never guess. I know, he's pretty buffed and looked and shaking and all that kind of stuff. He never quit, Nope, he never did. And he was still smoking when he's going through cancer treatment. Say he had pink creatic cancer, and he said, well that then, sound it came from Okans. Why should I stop smoking? Patrick? He died in two thousand and nine at fifty seven years old.
