0:10 Hi everyone, I'm Jeff and welcome to History and Factoid's about today. Now I have an awesome co host why Today. He's a comedian, improvisor, writer coach Mike Lucas. Welcome Mike, Thanks appreciate Jeff, glad to be here. Mike. Why don't you tell everybody something about you? Well? I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. I was a. Computer programmer for a couple of years. Out of college. I graduated with honors out of University of Dayton, Go Flyers. And at that point I decided to go a different route, and I began to do shows for Disney MBM Studios and Universal Studios in Florida. And as I did that during the day, at nighttime, I did stand up comedy.

0:55 And this was back in the nineties and so back last century. And I ended up in Chicago eventually, and then I joined Second City and performed for them while I was also doing stand up comedy. I ended up getting some TV spots, and I did a TV show on A and E called The Straight Dope for a season and had a thrilling time. And then moved to La at Vegas and worked for Second City there and so and then ended up doing a radio show on CBS Radio with my now wife where it was called Gretchen. And the Lukes and we made the Weird News Come Alive.

1:38 And so that ended. When the FM talk format ended, That's when Adam Carolla lost his job and we were at the same station as him, and we lost our job as well. And then that's when my kids were born. So I took ten years off helping to co raise my two babies. And now they're teenagers and they're ready for me to get out of the house. So I'm back on the stage now at the Dallas Comedy Club. I'm teaching classes there, I'm performing comedy, and I'm improvising on their house team for long form. So that's sort of me in a nutshell. Jeff, you probably are regretting that you asked me in the first place. No, not at all. Very interesting. I think we're all looking forward to hearing some more about it. I think everybody knows what today is.

2:30 How you read. It is Super Bowl Sunday. Now, back in nineteen sixty seven, when the NFL and AFL merged and form just the NFL, they wanted a name for their championship game. That would really stand out get people's attention. The NFL. It wasn't near as big back then it is today. The first Super Bowl was held in Los Angeles. It was between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs. Jickets were only twelve bucks and he didn't even sell out. Now, as they were playing in the game, Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, he saw his daughter playing with the super Bowl. It was a red ball that was really popular with kids in the nineteen sixty But it got Hunt thinking. Hit up the other owners and say what about super Bowl? Well, it's stuck and now it's the biggest sporting event in the United States. Sally, my Denver Broncos.

3:26 They're not in it this year. No, and not my Cleveland Browns either. We haven't. We've been the NFL champions multiple times back in the day, but when the Super Bowl came around, they. Decided no more. And so the Browns have been on a hiatus. I don't think they're protesting the super Bowl as much as they are avoiding the super Bowl. You know who I feel bad for in the Cleveland Browns organization, Not the players or do they have jobs? Not the fans because at least they have a team. Now I feel bad for the Cleveland Browns first down marker guy. It's freezing cold that he's not allowed to move until the Browns make a first out. Like he's just standing there holding the poll, just freezing love the ball.

4:07 Just punt. It's only first down punt. It's too cold. And now they got the Kansas City Chiefs are in the Super Bowl and they have my favorite player on there, Taylor Swift. She's us. She's starting to the right of the left tight end Travis Kelcey, you know. And I'm happy for their love. But the one thing that I think would be a deal break up for me is all that she was all that lipstick, So I would hate to be Travis Kelcey's the laundry guy. I think Travis got into that just for the exposure, the money and of the fame and all that kind of stuff. But now I think he's afraid to leave for the simple fact that she'll write a song about him.

4:53 Oh my god, that's as soon as he goes, you know, he's going to get something about you know. You were big and dumb. Why did you leave me? I think Travis's brother is making out the best of it. He's just enjoying retirement and he didn't have to deal with her and all that, and he's making that. What's he got half of that ninety million bucks they got for their podcast? All right, let's he's going on in entertainment on February ninth, So back one year, twenty twenty four, and then one album was American Dream by twenty one Savages. Jack Carlow had the number one song with loving on Me. All right round your boy hold on. I don't know what you heard. It was your daughter about your boy, but they lot about your boy. Going dumb, and it's some bidyott about your boy. She wearing a shereet of print. That's how bad she won't be spoty around your boy. Jakes me out, watch me, baby me. Nate Smith he had the number one country song with World on Fire.

5:45 He said, the. World Fire, Yes, home watching I just got burn burn burn on that Merlin Zimsert. The number one book was Fourth Wing by Rorecca Yaris. The top movie was Argyle, a reclusive writer who writes about Espiona, secret agents and spies. She realizes that her book that she's writing is starting to mirror in real life stars Harry Caville, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Sam Rockwell, all right, Mike Sin's we're in entertainment. That's definitely your world.

6:28 It's done a lot of big things in the entertainment industry. So were you nervous when you went on The Tonight's Show with Jay Little? Yeah? It was always nerve wracking, even the second time I went on. It was very new to me. I was pretty young, and. It's not that I didn't deserve to be on the show, but I got on it in a kind. Of a crazy way. I auditioned in Chicago. When The Tonight Show was filming on location in Chicago. So they sent their Jimmy Brogan and some of their head writers came. Out to the clubs and watched about twelve or fifteen. Of us and I just killed. I just had a really great set. It was my home club. And so they wanted to have me on the show that Friday night.

7:12 And then they said, well, you know what, we ended up getting a different Michael for the show, Michael Jordan. He's coming on the show on Friday night, so we're going to bump you. And I was kind of bummed out, But then they said, we'll fly you to LA and we'll put you on the show that way. So I ended up being delayed but getting on the show anyway and doing my set. It had a really great set, and. Then they asked me back one time to do another follow up set, and then the guy who booked the show stopped booking the show, and the next person up was no longer interested in my services. Michael Jordan was sure a nice guy to stay there in Chicago so you can go out to California and hit it big. He was. He did okay for himself.

7:58 I was. Happy that he got his break on the Tonight Show like that and was able to pull a career together out of. That one spot that I gave him. Right he did. He did okay for himself. It's funny. I lived in Chicago when Michael Jordan was the big thing there and we got to watch all of those games, you know, from bars in Chicago and with all other Bulls fans, and so I'm a Cleveland Cavaliers. Fan, you know, by trade, but. For that period time period, I was a Chicago Bulls fan. And when I got my Tonight Show at the end of my first set, I yelled, go Bulls, and a lot of Cleveland friends of mine were kind of pissed off because they felt I betrayed my loyalty to the well to the Cavaliers.

8:53 Well, let's be honest, it was a Cleveland Cavaliers back in the nineteen nineties. They weren't they weren't that hot. Yeah, but you know, as a good fan, you can't you can't bail on your team just because they're not doing well. But this was sort of an exception. We were watching Michael Jordan create these incredible moments when he would just you know, dunk from half court. It felt like, I think the best ever. Yeah, he would, he would. I mean, you get a good argument from a lot of people about that comment, but I would. I would agree, And I think. Just because I got to watch him. I don't think I ever saw him. No, I did. I got to see him once live on at a basketball game in Chicago. But it's it's incredible how fast those guys move.

9:42 All right, let's see what happened. On February of the ninth, twelve eighty seven, a massive storm hit the coast of southeast England. It was so powerful that chang's the coastline, the part of New Romney, it was no longer a part, it was a mile inland. In the eighteen twenty five United States presidential election, Andrew Jackson, he got forty one percent in the park the vote, John Quincy Adams, you got thirty one. Jackson got ninety nine electoral votes. Adams got eighty four, but that wasn't the majority needed. No, So by the constitution, the vote would be for who would be president. Yeah, I went to resolved around the US House of Representatives. Well, they they elected John Quincy Adams as the next president. Can you imagine what would happened to that happened today? That's well, they'd probably go to the Capitol and storm it again.

10:26 We do January sixth, Part two. That's It's funny. I wonder if anyone would go aboard. On that because now that everyone knows the repercussions of showing up at the Capitol and under those circumstances, it's like they didn't even arrest anybody at the time. They waited until afterwards, so people felt they were safe and they got away with it, and instead they didn't. It was kind of like how they're getting shopliffers. Now they're waiting until your grand larceny levels and then they're coming to pick you up at your home. So, Mike, do you carry cash on you anymore? These days? I think I have like seven dollars in my wallet in case somebody who's less fortunate than me asked me for money that I don't really have any other reason, which, by the way, I hate that guilt trip. Hey, can you give me some money? I have no money. Could you give me some money? In the old days, I would fall for that, And now I just show up my credit card bill. I'm just like, I'm like, yeah, you have zero dollars. I have negative eight, five hundred and seventy two dollars. Can you spare a few change, a little change? I need to make my monthly minimum.

11:32 Well, you know they're not going to hit you up twice. So that five dollars bill that you have in your wallet, if you go and pull it out, you look and see that that picture of Abraham Lincoln on it. He posts with that today in the White House in eighteen sixty four. All right, that's pretty cool. Can you imagine that you're posing for a picture that's going to be on the five dollar bill. And back then, did they have anything bigger than the five dollar bill? Sure they did. Yeah, they did have bills that were bigger. But to put it in perspective, that have a little five dollar bill, Yeah, today it'd be worth one hundred dollars and fifty one cents. So ab was on a bigger bill than he thought. In eighteen ninety five, at Springfield College in Massachusetts, William Morgan he invelved the new sport that he had just created. He called it mintonet.

12:12 Now when you're layered or all the spectators and players, they changed the name on their own to volleyball. He said he created it because basketball was too rigorous. It is, it's so much running, Oh my god. And now we can jump and slam dunk without moving. The War on drugs officially began today. In nineteen oh nine, the first federal loginst drugs were passed. The Feds went after opium, now the Opium Exclusion Act in nineteen oh nine. Now it didn't make opium illegal. You just couldn't import it, you couldn't possess it, and you couldn't smoke it. Now it was actually a really racist bill. It was actually targeted at the Chinese immigrants. Yeah, that's what I figured. It's like the marijuana bills that they passed, or it was targeting the Hispanics and the opium where the Chinese that were coming over.

12:58 It's a comedian way to get in your business. What was that I smell on you? Well, do you mind if I do a personal search of your of your body? Come here and bring in the dogs? Now? Yeah, they just they just passed through the law here in Texas where you can now have four ounces of personal stash without it being a problem. I was just thinking about all the pot dogs that were out of business. You know, they spent all that time learning how to sniff out your red and now they're like, oh, man, I gotta I gotta learn a new trade. I to be honest, I'm I'm I don't need them to legalize it any further right now. I've got a guy who does it for me, and he delivered it to my driveway, so I don't need I don't need you mess it up my system.

13:44 I got a system in place, man, don't mess it up with your laws. I did through a Yellowstone National Parks at the Wyoming state record for a coldest temperature of all time negative sixty six degrees. JAYZ, Wait, what was it feels like? Temperature? They did that here in Texas? They have they have it said it was like got down to twenty three degrees, but they said it feels like negative eleven. And I was like, where do you get that data from? Is there a guy that stands naked outside the studio? Feels like Fred, it's twenty three. What does it feel like outside? Fred? It's a minus eleven? Can I come in? Nope? Nineteen forty three, President Franklin Roosevelt, he's signed an executive order. It said a minimum of a forty hour work week for all industries needed to help with World War two. Now, everybody thought that was pretty much just gonna be factories and production and that kind of stuff. Hey pretty much included everyone, retail, store service, industry, domestic service, everyone. But to make matters worse, the order they wrote it said that if you work for the defense industry or any of those factories and that you would get overtime at forty hours a week. Well, if you were the store clerk or anyone else like that, yeah, you were exempt. You didn't start your overtime until you worked your mandatory forty eight hours. 15:02 He set the record for the fastest yolder in the world, still stands today. Now. We tried and tried, but we could not find a clip of it. Well, we did find a clip of the fastest yolder in the world with a cigarette in his mouth. Yay, we take it. Well, I like that's a good trade. You know what reminds me of when I was on the Conan O'Brien show for the first time. I was on as an actor, and I played a monk who got his hand deep fried in oil. And so what was was a similar situation that just happened here.

15:45 They had a child sitting. On Conan's lap who was playing Santa, and he said, I want to know the meaning of life, Santa, and Santa as Conan, Santa says, well, I can't give you that. I don't know what the answer to the life is. He said, but how about if I show you a monk getting at hand deep fried and oil. And so instead they showed me going ah and going crazy with that. So I was I was basically the yoler with the cigarette in his mouth. Well, hey, you got to start somewhere right right, that's a that's a good place to start. It's a good job if you can get it. Okay, my computing the onion spot here, you know, I just comeet in. You're also a coach and a comedy book writer. So if anybody out there wants to be funny, you know, not necessary stand up, but they want to have that perfect toast, or they wanted to just wow a business meeting. What is the number one tip you'd give them for telling a good joke.

16:33 Well, the one thing I would recommend for anyone who's new is to slow down. What happens typically is we tend to move fast because we're nervous being in front. You've heard Jerry Seinfeld's joke about the fear of public speaking. It's so intense that at a funeral, people would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy. And that's kind of rephrasing his joke. But it's true. And so when we're nervous, when we're giving a speech or we're giving a presentation, we tend to really speed up. And that alone, if you can just slow yourself down.

17:15 Anything you have prepared will land better. Excuse me, because you have slowed yourself down and given them a time. Enough chance to listen and to absorb what you're saying. So that'd be my number one suggestion. That'd be interesting for a lot of people because I don't think speed really comes across their mind. They're kind of thinking about how to use the perfect you know, voice, emphasis and all that kind of stuff. So I think, yeah, I think that's really good advice right there. Yeah, that's part of in the third book that I wrote on comedy. I call it flexibly funny muscle. But it's a good when you're slowing down. What you can also increase as you're listening skills when you're not speeding up and nervously moving fast and and you know where your mouth is, say vocal diarrhea, then you also have time to now listen, and when you're listening, you're able to absorb.

18:11 But the other person on stage is saying to you and. What's happening around you, and then you can react to that more comedically in a more timely way. That's why it's not just a community, but he's also a coach, and we'll give you a chance later on, and we'll tell you where you can get all the Mix's books so you can learn how to be super super funny at your next event. Let's do some birthdays and so. He was born on February the ninth, William Henry Harrison. He was born in Charles, Virginia in seventeen seventy three. Served as a ninth President of the United States, serve for thirty one days March fourth, eighteen forty one day April fourth, eighteen forty one, shortest term for any US president. Is also the first president to die in office. He actually got sick of his inauguration. He really wanted to appear tough, and it was really rainy and cold outside.

18:54 He wouldn't wear a coat or a hat or anything. Then he went ahead and gave the longest the inauguration speech by any president in history. Lasted over two hours. Oh good lord, come on, Bill Henry, what are you doing? So Yeah, he died at sixty eight years old from pneumonia. I bet you nobody who was in that audience listening to a two and a half hour speech felt bad that he died. I bet you they were all like good good. He made us suffer too. Yeah, paybacker you know what. Him and his wife had ten children. Harrison he was the last Yues president to have been born a British subject. 19:49 Boom chicken chick a boom chick. That was the Brazilian bombshell. Carmen Miranda. She was born in Portugal. In nineteen oh nine, she moved to Brazil and she was just a baby. Now she was really famous for performing wearing really big fruit hats. Yeah fruit ats. You can still see her. Yeah, she's on the stickers for the keep up Bananas Now. She was really huge in Bazil. Then she game in the United States in nineteen thirty nine, started on Broadway and in some movies. Now she was the highest paided entertainer in the world in the early nineteen forties. Producers though, and cameraman they just hated her. She drove the absolutely crazy. See she wouldn't wear panties, no, and she wasn't shy. She didn't care who who got a look or anything while she was singing and dancing up there. But they couldn't put that on film or on TV. Oh, giving them the old shared stones.

20:31 Yeah, and back then they definitely couldn't put it on film or TV, that's for sure. Carman and she married once for a couple of years. When her career started to fade, it went down really fast with her heavy drinking and smoking and drugs got her nineteen fifty five, forty six years old, she had a massive heart attack. I'm walking the whole I can't sleep away that is too. I'm hoping down frame as excited. The Texas troubadour Ernest Tubb He was born in Chris, Texas, in nineteen fourteen. He was a true pioneer in country music. Released thirty seven albums ninety two singles. Now he released the song Blue Christmas twenty years before Elviston. He had a lot of success doing duets with a young Loretta Lynn.

21:20 He had three children from his first wife, married his second wife in nineteen forty nine. They had five kids. Ernesty died from emphysema in nineteen eighty four at seventy years old, I couldn't. Sleep at all, and I kicked the blankets. That was Bobby Lewis. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in nineteen twenty five. He grew up in an orphanage, learned how to play the piano there when he was six. Now he had really bad eyesight. Ran away from the orphanage at fourteen years old, started playing and singing at carnivals.

22:04 So do you ever do any of your stand up act like carnivals or side shows or anything like that. No. No. The most I had to do was I had to be the Bill Murray character in Ghostbusters. There was a show at Universal Studios that I was an understudy for. We were in something called the Fire Department. We had to learn six different shows that were at the Universal Studios theme park. And so one of them was the Ghostbusters show. So I had to put on the Ghostbuster's uniform and be in a show that used trick lighting to make it look like they are real ghosts around us, and so we had to pretend like we're seeing these ghosts.

22:46 We had to try to memorize where the spots were that they'd show up for the people. But that's as close as that come to a carnival atmosphere. They got Bobby discovering. You got a record deal, a lot of it. Yeah, those huge hits and turn in one track mine, Oh yes, I love you. Around nineteen eighty he quit music. Yes, eyesight it was totally gone. He was blind. He said performing was just too hard. He had two daughters and his son. Bobby died in twenty twenty and ninety five years old from pneumonia. It's it's too late. We really did try to kid. Something inside. Just Carol King. She's eighty three today. She was born in Manhattan, New York, in nineteen forty two.

23:38 She is the most successful female songwriter of all time. She's written one hundred and sixteen songs that charted. She also had a very successful solo career, sold over seventy five million records. Her nineteen seventy one album Tapestry spent fifteen straight away, So number one. That's the most by any woman singer ever. Wow, it was until Taylor Swift passed her up a couple of years ago. Yeah, yeah, boy kk, she's doing making a run. Some Carol's solo hits are It's too late I feel the earth move under my feet so far away. Only love is real. She's divorced four times. She had two children from her first husband and two children from her second husband. Have you ever met Joe Pesci?

24:19 I did not get a chance to meet Joe PESHI. I would love to, though, I would I pick him up and cradle him. Okay, he's any to today. He was on in Newark, New Jersey in nineteen forty three. He punched me. If I did that? You know that he would gay you know, right there in a kisser. Do you knew what his first movie was was back in nineteen sixty one, sixty one? I can't guess. No, it was Hey, let's twist. He was a dancer at the Peppermint Lounge. Now, by the nineteen eighties he had turned that five foot four in frame into being a total badass with Raging Bull Casino won an Oscar for good Jellis. Then he got tired of being a macho Manson. We went into comedy Home Alone, movies, Elite, the Weapon movies, My cousin Vinny. Now, since she won, don't you think that he should have want an Oscar for that too? Yeah? That that was an interesting was that Marissa told me one that and he did not. And he was equally effective in that movie.

25:19 But comedy does It's really hard for comedians to win the Comedy actors to win the Oscar. He was nominated for an Oscar again though for The Irishman. That wasn't a comedy though. Oh that wasn't that funny that there were those jokes sucked in that movie? Joe he married once for four years and they had a daughter. Man, what's your difference? Take a chance and face the open a room mans? Time lost the three More two?

26:03 Do you remember that show from the eighties? Yeah, Who's the Boss? That was classic? That was Tony Denson, right, yeah, but Judith Light was the boss. Judith was the boss, yeah, and Derek Cowen was a good twist to make the woman in charge. Judith Lied. She was born in trind New Jersey, in nineteen forty nine. She's seventy six today. Now. She hit big on daytime soap opera One Life to Live. I mean she was huge. She pretty much won every soap opera award you could possibly think about. They kicked out me to go to primetime, so that's when she started on Who's the Boss, then Law and Order Ugly Betty just won to Tony's for Broadway Juday. She's been married since nineteen eighty five. Really, the lead singer for Frankie Goes to Hollywood was born William but he just goes by Holly Holly Johnson. Now he was born in Liverpool, England in nineteen sixty sixty five years old today started out playing bass guitar for the band Big in Japan.

27:17 Then he help formed Frankie Goes to Hollywood nineteen eighty. Now, the guys couldn't think of a name, and they were hanging out one day and they saw a magazine and they had a picture of Frank Sinatra in it. The headline read Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Well, they had their band name. Now that song Relaxed. It was initially banned over in Britain. Now it's Britain's number selling, number seven selling song of all time. Now they've done a couple reunion shows over the year, but they pretty much ended in nineteen eighty seven. Now that album that the song relax was on, it's called Welcome to the Pleasure Zome Holly. It's out tour in the UK celebrating fortieth anniversary of that album. Oh wow, forty years ago. That's crazy. Sure it makes you feel kind of old, doesn't it. It doesn't, And I'm like, wow, that was popular when I was in college.

28:00 He was diagnosed with HIV in nineteen ninety three. Now he thought he was pretty much dead. Yeah, so he wrote his autobiography. He said goodbye to everybody and just kind of kept by himself. Then after a couple of years and he hadn't died, he thought, you know what, I should probably go do some music again. Same deverlieve me, Longe. Now you're solid, long song and you say me happy if you could just come back home. Well, here's a quarter called somewong. To Travis Trent. He wrote that song. Here's a quarter called somebody who Cares the night his wife served him with the borse papers. Yeah, she was tired of Travis not making any money. Wanted him to get a real job. Well, one month after their divorce was final, they released that record that that song was on sold three million. She got not one dime from it. Travis's sixty two. He's born in Marriyotuta, Georgia. In nineteen sixty three, tied himself out of play the guitar when he was eight. Now here's a quarter it calls some of new Care is probably the most famous song. Yeah, it didn't go to number one. It's coinly got up to number two. Some of the number one songs are held me hold on anymore foolish pride, best of intention. Travis. He's going out on tour April fifth, and he'll go all the way till the end of October. So if you want to see Travi, you'll have plenty of time to do it now.

His second wife, she's the one that surved with the divorce papers and then got no money for it. He's been married to his third wife since nineteen ninety three and they have a daughter and two sons. Not the basketball player actor Michael B. Jordan. He's thirty eight. He's born in Santa Ana, California, in nineteen eighty seven. Started out as a child model. Did a lot of ads for toys, rs and stuff like that on TV. First got known on the Wire, then Friday Night Lights, Parenthood biggest success has been movies. Played the Black Panther in a couple of movies, he was Human, Torch and Fantastic Four. Starred in all three Creeden movies. Hadn't married yet. All right, Mike, I believe you have a new book coming out, don't you. Yeah? I do.

30:06 I have six books total. Three are about comedy. They're called The Funny Muscle Books. I have one collection of pristed short stories for adults called Fog Belly Beans. And I've got one that's a cranky comedian's guide to prioritizing your daily joy called My Daily Joy Strategy. But the one coming out on Friday, it actually just came out on Friday, It just a couple of days ago. It's a martial arts vigilanti crime thriller and it's called spin Kick The Hits of Death, and I'm really excited about it. It took me four years to write, and it's based on a somewhat true story. Loosely based on a somewhat true story. But it's a great read and it's something that I'm very proud of.

31:32 I think stand up comedy. It has to be at least the hardest job in the entertainment business. But it's just a really tough job. It's one of those jobs where everybody in the room has made somebody else laugh, so they all think they can do what you do. And then to do it at a level where you're doing it for people who don't know you, that's where it takes some extra skill because everyone in the room is probably funny right to somebody. I was gonna say I'm still shocked at the people that come out and say this is my first time I've ever been to a comedy club.
