09 I'm Jeff and welcome to history and Factoids about the Day, presenting by Cool Media o Itays. January the thirty first, Today is National Hot Chocolate Day. Now, there is a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa. Yes, there is hot chocolate. It's thicker and creamier. Hot cocoa. It's made from cocoa, powdered milk and sugar. Hot chocolate is ground chocolate and contains cocoa butter, so it's better. I mean, they're both pretty good. Hot chocolate got popular in the United States in eighteen hundreds. Yeah, they use hot chocolate as a medicine for stomach problems. But after a while people started thinking, you know what, my stomach feels fine, but I sure would like some hot chocolate drinks some today.

00 Don't forget to Tapa with those little diarny marshmallows, or I guess you can use whipped cream. So if you're drinking it because you need to keep warmer, you just want to adult, enjoy that hot chocolate today, all right, this is going on entertainment On January thirty first, after year twenty thirteen, number one album was Burning Lives by Chris Domlin. Bruno Mars had the number one song with locked Out of Heaven. To Sex Takes Me Too Fast First Steady Sex take Sme Too Stop Best that. Sash I'm Gonna lock Up. The band Perry had a number one country song with better Dig two.

44 In the Town to Miss six Down, Don't Say Us Just a little too much. Figure that in Bettered Dick two. The number one book was a Memory of Light by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The top movie was Warm Bodies a zombie He saves a still living girl from being attacked, then they become buds stars Nicholas Holt, Teresa Palmer, and John Melkovic. Nineteen forty nine, the first daytime soap opera went on the air, These Are My Children. It was about an irishwoman who ran in boarding house. Now it was sponsored by Procter and Gamble, so they advertised soap in another household product for women. Yeah, that's why they're called soap operas. What happened in the world on January thirty first, Well, we're starting out on fire. Today seventeen forty seven, the world's first venereal disease clinic opened up in a hospital on London, England. Now penicillin it won't be discovered for an other than one hundred and fifty years.

46 Makes you wonder what they did now. Veneerial disease was first mentioned around four inner BC. It was over in Greece. Now I didn't know what he was talking about, but he sure described gonerrhea to a t. It was Hippocrates. Now they do believe though the ancient agents Greeks and Romans all kind of referred to VD and when we were another like way early on, like thirty five hundred BC. So all of you who went to a high school or college, do you know what the word campus means? Well, it's Latin. Yeah, it means field. It was first used today in seventeen seventy four was to describe Princeton University. It's kind of funny VD in college. Back to back. Eighteen sixty five, by a vote one hundred and twenty one to twenty four United States Congress, they passed the Thirteenth Amendment through the United States Constitution. It abolished slavery and involuntary servitude. That's right. I think everybody knows the Thirteenth Amendment got rid of slavery. But not totally. No, it's still in there today. It says that slavery can be used as punishment for our crime if person has been convicted for it. That's right. See, that's what they used to justify when they have all those prisoners on chain gangs doing manual labor. So yeah, that's that we're allowed to do it. No, never changed it or amended it yet. Daytona Beach, Florida. In nineteen oh five, Britain's Arthur McDonald he became the first dude to drive an automobile over undred miles an hour. It is up to one hundred and four on the sands of Daytona Beach.

02 Seems kind of early for spring break. In nineteen thirty Scotch tape went on sale. It had thirty three dollars in sales that first year. Now, when Richard Drew invented the clear tape, he only had adhesive on the edges of the tape, so when you use it, it quickly fell off, and his customers would come back and told him take back this scotch tape. Let's say, back then, the term scotch it was meant. It was really derogratory. It meant cheap. Then after he fixed it by putting the adhesive all the way across the strip, he just kept the name Scotch Tape nineteen forty five. Over in France and World War two, United States Private Eddie Slovak. He was executed by firing squad. A US firing squad was for desertion. Now he was the only US soldier executed for desertion. During World War Two. Over twenty one thousand men were convicted of desertion, but he was the only one executed. So why Eddie, Well, don't really know.

48 It's pretty unclear. I mean, it could have been because he had a prison background before he got drafted into the army and everybody pretty much agreed the guy was a total lass and the Mighty Army they might have just used that kind of ex sendim say. No one really knows, and if they know, they took it to their grave with them. Martin Sheen played him in the movie Now Eddie. He was the first person, the first soldier in the military to be executed for just desertion since the Civil War, and since Eddie, no other soldier has ever been executed for desertion since Now the word computer. It was originally used to describe a person today. In nineteen fifty eighth, the United States successfully launched it's for satellite into space. It was Explorer one. Now the trajectory calculations, they're all done by hand by an all female team.

31 They called those women computers. Then when the machines took their job. Yeah, they just turned the word computers over the machines. Now Explore one. It remained in a space until nineteen seventy, So those women did some pretty fancy computing. In nineteen sixty one, the United States launched the first primate into space in world history. It was Ham, the astrochimp. Now Ham. He survived the trip just fine. He came back. He was a celebrity. He lived in Zeus until he died from old age in nineteen eighty three. Nineteen seventy, the guys in the band Grateful Day, they were arrested for drugs in New Orleans. I know, hard to believe. Well, it turns out the band owed the mob down in Texas money and the Texas mobsters were starting to get really mad. And I'm guessing the dead were pretty high, you know, high per Yeah, every knew who they were, so they were kind of too high profile to whack.

16 So what the mobsters? They turned them over to the authorities. Yeah, the Dead sing about it in their song Trucking nineteen ninety five. The United States President Bill Clinton, he was trying to avoid an illegal immigration problem, so he gave Mexico twenty billion dollar loan. Yeah, so they could stabilize their economy so their people wouldn't be crossing the border illegally. Doesn't see if it worked. Bo doked cojked goat shuge thish shivers day. 10:31 They quoted saying, the whole thing is a pistain. I guess we're British. We know what that meant. Our biggest songs where God Saved the Queen, Come on, everybody, anarchy in the UK, freaking the rigging. Now, they were really big over in Europe, in the UK, not in the United States, so no over here they were just considered an underground band, never even got any airplay or anything like that.
