19 Hi, I am Jeff, and welcome to History and Factoids About Today. Today's November the 6th. Today is National Nacho Day! Woo-hoo! In 1943, the wives of soldiers who were stationed in Fort Duncan in Texas went across the Rio Grande River to the Mexican town of Piedras Negras. They wanted to eat at their best restaurant over there called the Victory Club. Ah, the Victory Club had closed for the day, but their manager, Ignacio Enya, he was nicknamed Nacho, he told the women that he'd scrape some stuff up together for them. So he took some tortillas and he sloped them into triangles.

11 Then he deep fried them. Then he put on some cheese and slices of jalapeno peppers. Yeah, the nacho was then born. All you really need for nachos now is chips and cheese, but that's when the fun starts. You can top them however you want. Not many national deals today. No. So just local restaurants. That's okay. If you don't like going to your local place, yeah, just grab yourself, make your own nachos today. Alrighty, let's see what happened to entertainment on November the 6th. Let's go back to 2015. Number one album was Revival by Selena Gomez. The Weeknd had their number one song with The Hills. I only love it when you touch me. Luke Bryan had the.

03 Number one country song was Strip It Down. Dirty dance we slow in the summertime. Feel my belt turn loose from these old blue jeans. We both know that we lost. It somehow Let's get it found Strip it. Down, down, down. The number one selling book was Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham. Top movie was Spectre. A cryptic message from James Bond's past. It makes him go on the hunt for an unknown evil organization named Spectre. Daniel Craig, he's James Bond. Also has Christopher Waltz and Lea Seydoux. All right, what happened on November the 6th? Now, when Columbus landed in the Bahamas, him and his men, they exchanged gifts with the natives.

52 The natives, they gave them all clumps of leaves. Well, they accepted the leaves. They didn't want to offend the natives. So in Columbus's journal today that he wrote, it was dated today in 1492, Columbus wrote that he figured out what those leaves are about. See, what he did is he saw some natives who were smoking them. So some of his sailors, they actually tried to smoke them with the natives. They quickly became addicted to them. Now, one of his soldiers, his name was Rodrigo de la Jerez, he brought some of those leaves back to Spain with him. Yeah, when he was home, he was standing on the street corner just smoking some of his tobacco, blowing smoke out of his mouth. Yeah, he got thrown in prison. They thought the devil had possessed him. 1528, Spanish conquistador Alvaro Nunez Cabrisa de Vaca. Him and his men, they were exploring the Gulf of Mexico. Well, Gulf of America today.

36 Now, a hurricane totaled their three ships. Alvaro and about 80 of his men, they were able to survive by getting to an island. Today, it's Galveston Island in Texas. First Europeans to set foot in Texas. Now, they camped on the island all winter long. Only 15 of those men, of the 80, actually survived. Finally, some Native Americans saw him out there and came and rescued him. Well, they didn't really rescue him. What they did is they made him their slaves. So they brought him to the mainland. Then after four years of being a slave, Alvar and three of his men, they escaped, headed down south, made it all the way to Mexico City in 1537, nine years after they had actually been shipwrecked. Now they were shipped back to Spain. They were able to give the Spanish a very detailed account of what the southwest part of America looks like. 1865, the Confederate warship, the Shenandoah, it was the last Confederate combat unit to actually surrender in the Civil War. Shenandoah had been doing a circumnavigation of the world, so it had no idea the peace treaty had been signed. When they were docked in Liverpool, England, the people told them at the dock, yeah, you guys are no longer at war.

34 So the captain, he surrendered his ship to the British authorities. 1928, Jacob Schick, he invented the electric razor, formed the Schick Razor Company. Now Schick's basically known for disposable razors. 1947, NBC, they aired Meet the Press. It's still in the air, longest running TV show. Now, in the first Gulf War, when the Iraqi soldiers were fleeing Kuwait, they set fire to over 700 oil wells. Then in 1991, it was only 10 months later, the last oil well fire was put out. But what's actually more impressive is before they could put those oil well fires out, yeah, they actually had to remove booby traps and mines and all that kind of stuff.
