19 Hi, I'm Jeff. Welcome to History and Factoids About Today. Today's October the 15th. You've heard of Wisconsin, you've heard of our cheese. Cheese tasting so good, it's sure to please. I can't say enough, cause it's really good stuff. Wisconsin cheese, may I have some please? Ellsworth is the cheese curd capital. Ellsworth. Ellsworth. Ellsworth is the cheese curd capital. Today is National Cheese Curd Day. Now, it was started by Culver's Restaurants in 2015. Deep fried nuggets of breaded cheese. They're ooey, gooey, and squeaky neat. Now, Culver's and Freddy's Restaurants. Yeah, they're having the best deals today. Now, when cheese is made, it separates into curds and muay. Now, trust me, you like the curds part. Now, originally, cheese curds, they were just the leftover cheese that didn't fit into the cheese molds.
10 So then they deep fry them, and yeah. So enjoy some cheese curds today. Now, if you like lactose intolerant or something, you don't like cheese curds, Yeah, it's also National Grouch Day, and it's National Mushroom Day, and it's National Shrama Day. So you'll find something you can celebrate today. All right, let's see what's going on in entertainment on October the 15th, back in 2002. Number one album was Elvis, 30 number one hits. They re-released it by Elvis Presley. Kelly Clarkson had the number one song with A Moment Like This. A moment like this, some people. Wait a lifetime for a moment like this. Some people search.
50 Forever for that one special kiss. Oh, I can't believe it's happening to me. Keith Urban, he had the name on Country Song with Somebody Like You. There's a new wind blowing like I've never known. I'm breathing deeper than I've ever done. And it sure feels good to. Finally feel the way I do. I want to love somebody, love somebody like you. The number one selling book was From a Buick 8 by Stephen King. Top movie was The Ring. A journalist, she investigates a videotape. Anyone who watches it dies one week to the day after they see it. Stars Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, and Brian Cox. 1951, I Love Lucy debuted on TV. 1952, the book Charlotte's Web went on sale.
52 All right, what happened on October the 15th? So how far back do you think people bowled? Well, in 1520, England's King Henry VIII, he built a bowling alley into his castle. Yeah, the king, he loved to bowl. But he didn't want poor people or commoners to do it. No. So he put a big tax on bowling to keep out all the riffraff. He wanted to make sure only the rich could bowl. So the answer to my own question. Bowling, it goes back to ancient Egypt, about 5,000 years. 1660 in New Amsterdam. That's New York today. A Jewish immigrant named Asher Levy. He was granted one of the first butcher licenses. And not only that, he was given the first kosher butcher license. After that, he went on to be the first Jew to own a slaughterhouse, first Jew to actually own a house, and the first Jew to own a tavern in North America. 1860 in Westfield, New York.
39 11-year-old Grace Bedell, she wrote a letter to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln. She said she couldn't vote, but she really wanted him to win. And then she told him that he should grow a beard. She said, You would look a lot better because of your thin face. Plus, the ladies love the whiskers. Well, Abe, he wrote her back and said, well, he'd never grown a beard, but he would think about it. He thought about it and grew a beard. After he won the election on his way to Washington, D.C. to be inaugurated, he had a strange stop in Westville, New York. When he got off of the train, he met Grace and her dad on the platform. Abe bent over and gave Grace a kiss on the cheek so she could feel his whiskers. Now, Lincoln, he was the first president to have a beard. Now, four other presidents since then have done it. Now, three presidents have had mutton chops, and three presidents have had mustaches.
24 No president has any facial hair since 1913. 1881, the first fishing magazine went on sale. Yeah, it was called American Angler. Yeah, the last issue. Yeah, in 2020, so it hadn't been gone very long. 1917, over in France, a French exotic dancer, her name was Mata Hari. She was executed by a firing squad. See, she was a spy for the Germans during World War I. She would sleep with the Allied officers and then give information to the Germans. Now, for her execution, she dressed all up really nice and pretty and everything. She refused to wear a blindfold. She even blew a kiss to the firing squad before they opened fire on her. Now, her family would not claim her body after the execution, so her body was actually donated for medical study. Now, she wasn't this, like, young stripper thing. She was, like, 41 years old. She was a little chubby. 1932, Tata Airlines made its first flight.
12 It later became Air India. That would have been cool if Tata Airlines had bought out by Hooters. 1933, the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution went into effect. So that made the presidential term start in January 20th instead of on March 4th. And it had Congress start on January 3rd instead of March 4th. Yeah, they wanted to get rid of that long lame duck time. 1976, for the first time, they held a vice presidential debate. Walter Mondale, he went at it. He was running with Jimmy Carter. He went at it with Bob Dole, who was running with Gerald Ford. 1992, New York subway driver Robert Ray, he was convicted of manslaughter. Yeah, for the death of five of his passengers. See, he fell asleep when he was drunk and driving the subway. Killed him. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, shawty.
