19 Hi there i am jeff and welcome to history and factoids about today presented by cool media today's october the 18th come. On baby gonna change it to you. Today is mashed potato day. Humans have been eating potatoes for around 8,000 years. Sir Walter Raleigh, he brought the first potatoes from South America to Ireland in 1589. Eventually, they spread throughout Europe. In 1620, the governor of the Bahamas sent a gift basket to the governor of Virginia.

07 It contained potatoes. That's how potatoes made their way to the United States. So, who created mashed potatoes? Well, no one knows. I'm guessing it was somebody with bad teeth. Now, Potatoes, mashed potatoes, they could be fairly healthy, but we put so much crap on them, they're not healthy at all for us. So whether you make them yourself or you go out to eat, just enjoy some mashed potatoes today. If that's not your thing, have fun dancing to Dee Dee Sharp, the mashed potato. All right, let's see what's going on in entertainment on October 18th. It's about to 2022. Number one album was Un Verano Senti by Bad Bunny. Steve Lacey had the number one song with Bad Habit. I bite my tongue, it's a bad habit. Kind of mad that I didn't take a stab. Thought you were too good for me, my dear. Never gave me time of day, my dear. It's okay, things happen for reasons that I think are sure, yeah.

05 Morgan Wallen had the number one country song with You Proof. Yeah i've been sipping i've been buzzing shooting doubles like it's nothing all but nothing makes you go away i need something you prove something stronger than i'm used to yeah i've been pulling 92 a heart. I feel like nothing's gonna cut it that's the heart The number one book was Verified by Colleen Hoover. Top movie was Black Adam. 5,000 years after he was entombed, Black Adam was freed. Now he will unleash his form of justice on the modern world. Stars Dwayne Johnson, Pierce Brosnan, Aldous Hodge. Back in 1851, the classic novel Moby Dick, written by Herman Melville, it went on sale. No one bought it. Nope, in Melville's whole lifetime, only 3,200 copies of Moby Dick sold. Then after he died, boom, Huge classic now. Yeah, that didn't do him any good, though, did it? All right, what happened on October the 18th?

06 Let's go back to 1648. The first labor union was organized in the North American colonies. It was in Boston. It was the Boston Shoemakers. No, they literally made shoes. I mean, it sounds like an old baseball team, though. 1776, at a bar in Elmsford, New York, it was decorated with bird tail feathers, and a drunk customer asked bartender Betsy Flanagan for a glass full of those cocktails. Well, they think that's how the word cocktails came into being. Could have been as good a story as anything else, right? 1867, it was official. After spending almost two cents an acre for a total of $ 7. 2 million, the United States officially owned Alaska. Yep, the check cleared. I think that still pisses off Russia. Now, you can actually see that check.

49 You just have to go online and look it up. And you'll see it's date stamped and everything that says paid in full. To the victor go the spoils. 1898, the American flag was raised on the island of Puerto Rico. U.S. Got Puerto Rico for beating Spain in the Spanish-American War. Now, I will admit this is one of my favorite inventions of all time. In Minnesota in 1921, Charles Streit, he invented the pop-up toaster. Well, this was pretty chivalrous. 1929, Canada law declared that women are now officially considered persons. 1962, the United States launched a spacecraft, Ranger 5. It was just supposed to slam into the moon so we could see what happened. Well, we missed the moon. Who knows? We might have pissed off somebody in the next solar system over.

31 Who knows? What the hell are you doing? Let's check out who was born on October the 18th.

Got married in 1948, and they had four children. Had he stayed faithful, he wouldn't have been in jail so much. Now, he died in 2017 at 90 years old from just natural causes. After George C. 7:23 Actress Dawn Wells was born in Reno, Nevada in 1938. Started out as Miss Nevada, competed in Miss America in 1960. She didn't win, but it helped her get the job playing Marianne on Gilligan's Island. Any guesses what Marianne's last name was? It was Summers. She was Marianne Summers. And her character was based on Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Yeah, that's why she had the pigtails and was from Kansas and everything. Don, she married once for five years in the 1960s. 8:53 She got famous playing Joni Cunningham on Happy Days. Did it for 10 years, 234 episodes. Then when it was over, they spun her and Scott Baio off into Joni Loves Chachi. Lasted 17 episodes. That was way too many. Erin, she married her second husband in 1993. She died from throat cancer in 2017 at only 56 years old. The muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme.
