19 Hi everyone, I am Jeff and welcome to History and Factoids About Today. Today is October the 20th. I have arrived. It is National Jeff Day today. I pay you. That's better. Now Jeff is the American version for the German name Jeffrey, but in Germany it's with a G instead of a J. It means Pledge of Peace. Jeff is the 123rd most given male name in the United States. Worldwide, one out of every 869,739 people are named Jeff. But get this, I'm not the only Jeff to have achieved worldwide fame. No, there are actually quite a few of them.
15 There are actors Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Burgess, Jeff Daniels, a race car driver named Jeff Gordon, some business dude named Jeff Bezos. So how do we celebrate today? Well, we don't. Today's all about the Jeffs. So don't annoy us and let us do what we want to do. Watch what we want to watch. Listen to what we want to listen to. Now, if you see a chore that we need to do, yeah, go ahead and tackle yourself today. Now, most Jeffs, we pretty much have what we need, so there's no reason for presents today. But I'm sure most Jeffs, they wouldn't mind celebrating with a little pizza and beer tonight. So for all you commoners out there, today's also Chicken and Waffles Day. So yeah, you can have fun with that. All right, let's see what's going on in entertainment on October the 20th. Let's back to 1991. Number one album was Rope in the Wind by Garth Brooks. Mariah Carey had the number one song with Emotions. But I like the way you feel inside You make me feel like emotions.
10 Deeper than I've ever dreamed. Of Oh, oh, yeah. Travis Tritt, he had the number one country song with Anymore. He says I can't keep reading today I don't love you anymore I've got to take a chance or let it pass by If I expect to get on with my. Life The number one book was Scarlet by Alexander Ripley.
55 The top movie was Other People's Money. A corporate raider, he buys a small company and then he falls in love with the founder's granddaughter. Stars Danny DeVito, Gregory Peck, and Penelope Ann Miller. All right, what happened on October the 20th? 1818, the United States and Great Britain got together and agreed that the 49th parallel would be the border between the United States and Canada. What about that Oregon area? Yeah, well, just joint, um, control that it worked for a while but yeah about 20 years and then it turned into an almost old war in world war one airplane pilots they really didn't have parachutes no the cockpits they weren't designed to have a pilot in a parachute so after the war they actually redesigned the cockpits then 1922 u.s army pilot howard harris he was in a training flight when the wings fell off his airplane yeah about 2500 feet up in the air so he was able to jump out of the plane with this parachute Now, after he landed with only some cuts, some bruises and stuff. Yep, he was the first pilot to ever jump from an airplane that had become disabled and actually survived by a parachute. Now, people had parachuted out of planes to test the parachute, but they wanted to do that. So you go back to March 20th in 1942. Now, after fleeing the Philippines and arriving in Australia, United States General Douglas MacArthur, he gave his famous decree, I shall return. Well, that didn't do any good for the 12,000 United States soldiers that he had left behind in the Philippines, or all those Filipino soldiers that he left there. But the United States, they went back and they fought in the Philippines, and they were able to take it back from the Japanese. It was today in 1944. MacArthur,
28 he waited ashore on a beach over in Leyde. It had been secured. Now, he was in his perfectly pressed, starched, and ironed uniform, surrounded by photographers. He walked on the beach and proudly proclaimed, People of the Philippines, I have returned. Now, over 20,000 U.S. soldiers had died fighting so MacArthur could make that triumphant return. Now, usually when you see a story about Bigfoot, they always play that really grainy video of Bigfoot walking across the creek bed. That was filmed today, 1967. Two hunters got it when they were up in Northern California. Now, with all the latest technology and everything we have, they've actually gone and done all kinds of research on that. Yeah, they still can't debunk that video. Yeah, it's called the Peterson footage. Yeah, the expert conclusion is they don't know what that thing is in the video, but they know the video is not fake. 1975, the United States Supreme Court ruled that teachers could spank students after they gave them a warning. Well, sort of. They actually said that it was up to the states. If the states wanted to spank, there was nothing making it illegal to. So today, even today, there's no federal law saying that somebody cannot spank a student if they want. It's all state. So they might not do it, but 18 states still have laws on the books that allow spanking. In 1976, a pilot of a Soviet airline passenger jet, he bet his co-pilot that he could actually land that plane with all the windows blacked out. So the two of them, they got together and they blacked out all the windows. So the pilot hit the runway at 174 miles an hour, caused the plane to flip, killed 70 passengers. Now the pilot,
01 he was perfectly fine. Yeah, he walked away unhurt. The co-pilot, he died from a heart attack on his way to the hospital. So that pilot, he ended up spending six years in jail for it. What do you think that bet was? So who was born on October the 20th? Horror movie actor Bela Lugosi. He was born in Hungary in 1882. Now the town he was born in was Lugos. It's actually in Romania now. Now Bela, he fought for Hungary in World War I. Yeah, until he got wounded. Now, he was fighting for Hungary, so that meant he was actually fighting for Germany. So after he got wounded, he came to the United States in 1917. Got known playing Dracula on Broadway. Then when talking movies came out, he played Dracula in all the movies.
53 So his thick Hungarian accent made him a really good Dracula. But that got him typecast. So yeah, he was stuck in horror flicks the rest of his life. Now, he had a son from his fourth wife. He was married to his fifth wife just for a year when he died from a heart attack in 1956 at 73 years old. Now, per his request, he was buried wearing a Dracula costume. Actor William Christopher. He was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1933.
35 He started out on the TV show Gomer Pyle. First, he's best known for playing Father Mulcahy on the TV show MASH. Back in 1957, he went on a blind date. Well, him and that girl, they got married shortly after that. Had two sons. They were together until William died in 2016 at 84 years old from lung cancer. Actor Jerry Orbach. He was born in the Bronx, New York in 1935. Now, he was really big on Broadway. He was nominated three times for Tonys. He won one time. Then he really got known when he put Baby in a Corner in the movie Dirty Dancing. On TV, he started on Law & Order for 12 years. Now, the last 10 years he was on Law & Order, yeah, he was fighting prostate cancer. Yeah, cancer. It finally got him in 2004 at 69 years old. He had two sons from his first wife and married his second wife in 1979. You remember Home Improvement? Well, we're not going to talk about Tim the Tool Man Taylor. We're not even going to talk about his partner, Al. We're going to talk about Wilson.
33 Earl Hindman, he was born in Bisbee, Arizona in 1942. Now, in 203 episodes in Home Improvement, you never saw his face. Yep, Tim and Wilson, they would like talk to each other about face or there'd be something blocking his face. Yep, never saw it. Now, before Home Improvement, Earl, he was on the soap opera Ryan's Hope for nine years. Married in 1976. They were together until he died from lung cancer in 2003. 61 years old. Outro Music.
18 Tom Petty. He was born in Gainesville, Florida in 1950. Now he and the Heartbreakers, they got together in 1976. Sold over 80 million records. Some of their hits are American Girl, Don't Do Me Like That, Don't Come Around Here No More. He had a number one country song. Yeah, it was called Mind Your Business. It was with Reba McEntire, Hank Williams Jr., and Willie Nelson. His biggest hit, though, was with Stevie Nicks, Stop Dragging My Heart Around. Tom, he was married to his first wife for 22 years, and they had two daughters. Then he married his second wife in 2001. Now in 2017, one week after Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers finished their 40th anniversary tour, Tommy died from an accidental drug overdose, 66 years old. Acting William Zabka, he's 60. He was born in New York City in 1965. First got known playing the blonde bully in the first Karate Kid movie. Then he was just a jerk in the movie Back to School. That was with Rodney Dangerfield. Went back to Karate Kid. He's been on Cobra Kai since 2018. I think they did end that earlier this year. Now, do you honestly, though, think that Ralph Macchio could actually have beaten him in a fight? No, it would not happen, even with all the stuff that Mr.
25 Miyagi taught him. Nah, William would have kicked Macchio's ass. All right, William and me married in 2008, and they have two kids. Now that was Snoop Doggy Dog, but he's grown up now, so he just goes by Snoop Dogg. He was born in Long Beach, California in 1971. 54-year-old, started out rapping on Dr. Dre albums. They let him go solo in the early 90s. Sold over 37 million albums.
07 That's a lot for a rapper. Now, Snoopy's everywhere, though. I mean, he's in commercials. He's a coach on The Voice. Basically, if there's a crowd and a camera, you'll probably find Snoop there. Now, he had a daughter from a fling, and he married his high school sweetheart in 1997, and they have two sons and one daughter. All righty, our quote of the day. It comes from Ronnie Van Zant. Ronnie was the lead singer for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He died today in 1977 when their plane crashed. He was only 29 years old. Ronnie says, the best way to hit a man is to hit him in his pocket.
