19 Hi everyone, I am Jeff and welcome to History and Factoids About Today. Today is October the 30th. Today is National Candy Corn Day. Now, I like the ones that come in the bags with the little pumpkins in it. Now, George Rittenhour, he created candy corn in Philly in the late 1800s. Now, candy corn is made from sugar, corn syrup, marshmallow syrup, and Karuba wax. Obviously, it's not healthy for you at all. I checked. Skittles is actually less healthy than candy corn. You know what? You can have fun with candy corn, especially with your kids. You can put them on cookies and cupcakes and all that kind of stuff.

12 So what you do today is you eat some candy corn. Then you eat the good stuff tomorrow. All right, let's see what happened in entertainment on October the 30th. It was back in 2014. Number one album was Old Boots, New Dirt by Jason Aldean. Meghan Trainor had the number one song with All About the Bass. Because you know I'm all about that bass, about that bass, no trouble. I'm all about that bass, about that bass, no trouble. Jason Aldean had the number one country song with Burnin' It Down.

54 We're just hangin' around, burnin' it down. Sippin' on some cold Jack Daniels and jammin' to some old Alabama music. The number one selling book was Leaving Time by Jody Picoult. Top movie was Ouija. Now, five friends accidentally unleash a dark power by using an antique Ouija board. Stars Olivia Cooke, Anna Cotto, and Darren Kashyap. All right, let's see what happened on October the 30th. 1864, Helena, Montana was formed. Yeah, it's a slow day. Hell no, it's the capital of Montana.

45 It's got a population of about 32,000 people. It has a semi-arid climate. 1866, Jesse James and his gang, they robbed a bank in Lexington, Missouri. Got away with two grand. That'd be about $ 41, 000 today. Now, the greatest show on earth, P.T. Barnum's Circus. It debuted in New York City today in 1873. Now, Barnum, he had had this really weird, macabre museum out there in New York since about 1841. All kinds of freak shows and really weird stuff. Had to take it on the road. Yeah, the museum burnt down. 1945, the United States government started, or they ended shoe rationing. That's right. See, up till then, civilians, they could only have two pairs of shoes a year. Yeah, the leather and rubber, they were needed for the war. So how would you know? Well, like all the rationing that was taking place, you got these little books and they had stamps in it. And you couldn't go buy a pair of shoes if you didn't have one of the stamps. So like if you had a family of four, you'd have eight stamps. So your kids who were actually growing that through their shoes. Yeah, the parents would have to give the kids basically one of their stamps to get a bigger size of shoe.

48 Back in 1924, Clarence Birdseye, he came up with the idea and he patented freezing food. Problem was no one had any freezers back then. About 1952, Birdseye sold his first frozen food. Yeah, he sold his first frozen peas. 1961, the Soviet Union detonated Tsar Bomba. It was a 58-megaton hydrogen bomb. It's still the most powerful nuclear bomb ever. After that, all the scientists kind of, we don't need to go any bigger than that. 1973, the Bosphorus Bridge opened up in Istanbul, Turkey. See, half of Istanbul, it's in Asia, and the other half of Istanbul is in Europe. It's separated by the Bosphorus River. Now, this was the first time that the two sides of Istanbul had been connected since the pontoon bridge ran across the river in 460 B.C., Okay, he was born.

36 On October the 30th. John Adams. He was born in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1735. Now his second. Cousin, Samuel Adams, he's the one who was raised in hell with. The Sons of Liberty. Yeah, starting that whole U.S. independence movement. John on there then, he took the diplomatic approach. He was that behind-the-scenes guy. He was a lawyer and administrator and all that stuff. Guy didn't be the first vice president, though. Then the second U.S. president served from 1797 to 1801. He married Abigail in 1765, and they had six kids.

20 His oldest son, John Quincy Adams, was the sixth president of the United States. Now, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, they hated each other. They couldn't even be in the same room together. Then over the years, as they got older, they became kind of cordial. Eventually, they became very good friends. Then on July 4th in 1826, on the 50th anniversary of signing the Declaration of Independence, John, he died at 90 years old, just a couple hours before Jefferson did. Actress Ruth Gordon, she was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1896. Most of us all probably know her best for the Clint Eastwood movies, Any Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can. Yeah, that's kind of our generations or younger. But she had a really big acting career before that. She was on Broadway when she was only 19 years old. She won an Oscar for the movie Rosemary's Baby. She was nominated for three Oscars for writing.

06 Now she had a son from a boyfriend. She married her second husband in 1942. They were together until Ruth died from a stroke, 1985, at 88 years old. I want to be a cowboy sweetheart I want to learn to rope and to ride I want to ride o'er the plains and the desert Out west of the great divide That. Was Patsy Montana. Now that song, I Want to Be a Cowboy Sweetheart, it was the first country song that was sung by a woman to sell a million records. 1936. Patsy, now she'd gone to college to UCLA to study violin.

47 While she was there, she entered a talent contest. She won for yodeling. So she ditched the violin and went into country music. Now she pretty much retired in the 1950s. She's just a wife and a mom and that kind of stuff. But she did release one more album in 1964. She had this young guy play guitar for her on the album. It was the first time that Waylon Jennings ever got paid for music. Patsy, she was born in Badre, Arkansas in 1908. She married in 1934. They had two children. She died in 1996 at 87 years old. That was Grace Slick singing for Jefferson Airplane. Grace is 87. She was born in Highland Park, Illinois. Now she's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Jefferson Airplane. Now not Jefferson Starship or Starship. Nope, they're not in there.

44 Just Jefferson Airplane. She helped form Jefferson Airplane in 1965. They had the big heads White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. Broke up in 1973. In 1974, Grace and most of the guys, they all got back together and wanted to go back together. Legal reasons they couldn't use Jefferson Airplane though. So Jefferson Starship it was. Then in the 1980s, just Starship. Now, Grace, she retired in 1990. She's been selling her art ever since. I guess her paintings really hit in 1995, somewhere around there. Yeah, she paints. Now, she was married for 10 years. Then after they divorced, she decided she wanted to have a daughter. So she had one with Paul Kantner. He was in Jefferson Airplanes. Then she married another guy for 18 years after that. Now, Grace, she had a lot, a lot of trouble with drugs and alcohol over there. And she couldn't quit no matter how hard she tried. Finally, in the 90s, she went to rehab with her daughter. Well, it sounds like it worked. They're both still alive and they're both out of jail. Henry Winkler is 81 years old.

40 Henry was born in Manhattan, New York in 1945. He got famous as the Fonz, or Arthur Fonzarelli if you prefer, on the TV show Happy Days. He's done a lot of acting. First got known in the movie The Lords of Flatbush. That was with Sylvester Stallone. His best movie is Night Shift. I know you younger generation are going to go with Waterboy. No, it's Night Shift. Now, besides directing and producing, he's also written 12 books. He married in 1978, and they have a son and a daughter. Everybody's got something for me.

28 That was Otis Williams singing for The Temptations. He's the only original Temptations that's still alive. 85-year-old Otis. So he's out there on tour with all those new Temptations, though. Yeah, they have shows scheduled up until March. He was born in Texarkana, Texas in 1941. He grew up in Detroit. Helped form The Temptations in 1960. Since he's the only one still alive, he owns the name The Temptations and all that royalties. So I guess if you outlive everybody, it's all yours. Notice he sang the baritone. So he almost always sang backup. He only sang lead, like on that one song I played, and that was about it. He had a son from his first wife and then he divorced her. two more women after that. Actor Harry Hamlin is 75. He's born in Pasadena, California. Now he found fame in the movie The Clash of the Titans.

09 But he's best known for TV. L.A. Law, Veronica Mars, Mad Men. He dated actress Ursula Andrews for four years and they had a son. His second wife was actress Nicole Sheridan. They were married for a year. And he married his third wife in 1997, and they have two daughters. Country singer T. Graham Brown is 72. He was born. In Arriba, Georgia. The T stands for Tony. His first name is actually Anthony. Some of his hits are Come Hell or High Water, Don't Go to Strangers, Darlene, If You Could See Me Now. Now, he is a king of advertising jingles. Since 1982, these are only a few of the companies that he's sang jingles for. McDonald's, Budweiser, Taco Bell, Coca-Cola, KFC, Dodge, Ford, Mountain Dew. It's a long list. He's been married since 1980, and they have one son. Actor, comedian Kevin Pollock. He was born in San Francisco in 1957. The 69-year-old was, well, is, a very successful stand-up comedian. He started doing stand-up when he was only 10 years old. If you haven't seen Kevin, he does really good impersonations. He does everything from Woody Allen to Al Pacino, from Sylvester Stallone to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yeah, he still goes out on tours and all kinds of stuff.

38 He only catches show. He's pretty good. Been in over 80 movies. Some of them are A Few Good Men, The Grumpy Old Men movies, The Whole Nine Yards, Whole Ten Yards, The Usual Suspect. Gavin Eve is married to comedian Lucy Webb for almost 15 years. I don't want to come back down from. This cloud. It's taken me all this time to find out what I need. I don't want to come. Back down from this cloud. Gavin Rossdale, he's the lead singer for the band Bush. Gavin's 61, born in Marylebone, England in 1965. Helped co-found Bush in 1992. Now, their original name, yeah, they were the Baby Animals. They changed it to Bush. It was for the town they lived in.

26 It was called Shepherd's Bush, England. Little things come down, glycerin, the chemicals between us. That's some of the Bush hits. Gavin, he had a daughter from a fling. Then he married singer Gwen Stefani for 13 years, and they had three sons. All righty, our quote of the day. It comes from Steve Allen. He died today in 2000 at 78 years old. Steve says, one of the nice things about problems, many of them do not exist except in our own imaginations. Well, thank you all for listening today. Don't forget to follow us on who you listen to us on. And always come down and check out the show's description so you can see all the links and everything to hook up with us. Our country underground radio artist of the day comes from Bonnie in Dayton, Ohio. She wants to hear Robinson Treat Your Song, Single and Stoned. You guys have an awesome day. We'll talk tomorrow.

39 Wanted to say so I know You'll be alright We do what we do Till we're beat up and blue I'll take the. Hit one more. Time As I sit here alone A single hand stone The last time I saw you top of the stairs you gave me that warning you made it real clear i was too high to notice and too drunk to care Let's say so I know you'll be all right We'll do what we do till we're beat up and blue And I'll take that one more time As I sit here alone
