19 Hi everyone i am jeff and welcome to history and factoids about today presented by cool media today's october the 31st i am the one. Hiding under your bed teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red. I am the one hiding under your stairs fingers. Like snakes and spiders in my. Hair Happy Halloween! It goes back to the 1500s in Scotland. Halloween, it means Hallow's evening, which is the night before All Hallows Day. That's when they would honor all the Catholic saints. By the late 1800s, kids in Scotland and Ireland, they would dress in costume and go door to door getting food. Trick or treat, that started in Canada in 1927.
07 By the 1930s, trick or treating was pretty much common all across the United States. Now today, 48% of you will wear a costume. 46% of you will carve a pumpkin. 16%, yeah, you're going to dress up your dog. 21% of you, yeah, you're going to pretend like you're not home. Everybody just have a fun and safe Halloween today. Okay, let's see what happened in October 31st back in 1964. Number one album was People by Barbra Streisand. The Supremes had their number one song with Baby Love. Baby love, my baby love. I need you. Oh, I need you. But all you do is treat me bad. Break my heart and leave me sad. Tell me what did I do wrong.
52 To make you stay away so long. Bucko and Zad the Neverland Country song with I Don't Care. I don't care if the sun don't shine. I don't care if the bells don't chime. Just as long as you love me. I don't care if the tops don't spin. I don't care if the gins won't gin. Just as long as you love me. The number one selling book was Herzog by Saul Bellow. The top movie was The Naked Kiss. A former prostitute moves to the suburbs and tries to fit in. Well, sometimes you can't escape your past. Stars Constance Towers, Anthony Aisley, and Michael Dante. All right, what happened on October the 31st? 1517, Martin Luther, he started the Protestant Reformation. He nailed his 95 theses on what was wrong with the Catholic Church to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Well, it took a while for it to make its way to Rome and then the Pope, but when he got it, yeah, Luther was excommunicated and forced to go hide for his life.
57 Now the Protestant Reformation, that ended up splitting Europe in half. Northern Europe went Protestant and Southern Europe, they pretty much were named Catholic. It was today in 1846, the Donner Party realized that due to heavy snow, they weren't getting over those Sierra Nevada mountains. So yeah, they had to set up basically a winter camp. I don't want to spoil the whole story for you, but it's not going to turn out good. Happy birthday, Nevada! Today in 1864, Nevada. Became the 36th state. Spanish named it Nevada. For the snow-covered mountain range.
47 Even though most of the state is desert, 86% of Nevada is uninhabited. But where people do live is pretty cool, though. Capital is Carson City. Highest point is Boundary Peak at 13,147 feet. Nevada State Tree is a bristlecone pine. State Bird is a mountain blue jay. Fish, cutthroat trout. Flower is a sagebrush. Reptile is a desert tortoise. State Mammal is a desert bighorn sheep. Some people born in Nevada are tennis player Andre Agassi. Baseball is Bryce Harper. Actress Don Wells. She played Mary Ann on Killy Gonzales. Now, race car drivers Kurt and Kyle Busch. Yep, born in Nevada. Former First Lady Pat Nixon. Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds. And the guys from the TV show Pawn Stars. Yep, all born in the Silver State.
32 1913, the first. Paved coast-to-coast highway in the United States opened up. They called it the Lincoln Highway. It was 3,389 miles long. Now, it wasn't like the interstate. See, it was only two lanes, and it meandered from town to town. Starting in New York's Times Square and ended in San Francisco. 1917 in World War I. It was the last time in world history that a cavalry charge was actually successful. Yeah, it was in Palestine in the Battle of Beersheba. The Australian cavalry was able to pull it off. 1923 in Marble Bay, Australia. The temperature hit 100 degrees. So the temperature hit 100 degrees for the next 160 days. 1941, the United States was still six weeks away from joining World War II, you know, after Pearl Harbor. But off of Iceland, the United States warship, the Buchanan James, it was sunk by a German U-boat. It was helping to escort a convoy of merchant ships to Europe. 115 U.S. sailors were killed.
25 They were the first U.S. servicemen killed in World War II. 1983, Ron Grant, he became the first person to run all the way around Australia. Took him 217 days to run the 8,316 miles from Brisbane to Brisbane. 1984, the prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi. She was assassinated by her two bodyguards. They killed her as she was walking in the garden at the prime minister's residency. It was while she was being interviewed for a documentary on an Ireland TV station. Shot her over 30 times. Then they didn't run or anything. They just stayed there until the police got there. They ended up being executed. 1992, Pope John Paul II. He had to take one for the team, man. He ended up being the pope who had to come clean. Yep, he had to publicly announce that the Catholic Church was wrong.
08 They should not have treated astronomer Galileo as badly as they did. It took him 357 years. But John Paul II, he said, Galileo was right. The earth does revolve around the sun. And Galileo should not have been tortured and forced to live the last eight years of his life in house arrest. I'm guessing most of you have either seen or heard about the movie Soul Surfer. 2003, 13-year-old surfer Bethany Hamilton had her arm bitten off by a shark while she was surfing off of Hawaii. 2018, the world's. Largest statue is unveiled. It's called the Statue of Unity. It's in Gujarat, India. The 597-foot statue is of Indian independence leader Sardar Patel. How about we check out who was born on Halloween?
07 Happy trails to you until we meet again. Happy trails to you. Keep smiling until then. Dale Evans. She wrote that song for her and her husband, Roy Rogers, in 1951. Dale, she was born in Uvalde, Texas in 1912. When she was 14, she eloped. They had a son, and then the guy just abandoned her and the boy. 16-year-old Dale, she went to Memphis to try and make it in music. She told everybody the son was her brother. She was just raising him. She got radio jobs. She got jobs playing the piano. She had two more marriages and divorces. She had a little minor success. But in 1947, she married Roy Rogers. They had five kids together. In the 1950s, they started on the Roy Rogers TV show.
59 They made a bunch of movies together, released a lot of songs. Roy, he died in 1998. Dale, she died in 2001 from heart failure. At 88 years old. Actor Michael Landon is born in Forest Hills, New York in 1936. Best known for TV. Started out playing Little Joe Cartwright on Bonanza. Then he was Pa on Little House on the Prairie. Then Jonathan on Highway to Heaven. He was on the cover of TV Guide 22 times. That is second behind Lucille Ball's 39 times. Landon had two sons from his first wife, two sons and three daughters from his second wife, son and a daughter from his third wife. They were married from 1983 until he died from cancer in 1991. He was 54 years old when the pancreatic cancer got him. Actor John Candy is born in Toronto, Canada in 1950. First got known in the movie Stripes. Then National Lampoon's Vacation, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck. He married in 1979, and they had two children. According to all those around him, he really tried, but he could not lose weight. He ended up dying from a heart attack in 1994 at 43 years old. Actor, comedian, Rob Schneider, 63. Born in San Francisco in 1963. He started out on Saturday Night Live for four years. Then he's been in every Adam Sandler movie. Now, some of his own movies were Deuce Bigelow, male gigolo movies, The Animal, Hot Chicks, Benchwarmers. He had
30 a daughter from a good time, then he married in 2011, and they have two children. I said, Lord, please forgive me for my sins. My wife wanted to kill me, but she tried to save me first. You're going if I have to drag your butt to church. I love this crazy tragedy. Sometimes almost magic. Awful beautiful life. Country singer Darryl Worley is 62. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Some of his hits are I Miss My Friend, Have You Forgotten, Awful Beautiful Life, If Something Should Happen. Darryl has a couple podcasts you can listen to on him out there. Just search for Darryl Worley. He got married to his second wife in 2007 and they have a daughter.
14 He celebrated getting married in 2007. Man, pose nude for Playgirl magazine. He's so fine, he can be me. He's got everything that I desire. He sets the summer sun on fire. Is that the perfect Halloween song or what? That was Annabella Elwynn singing for Bow Wow Wow. She was born in Rangoon, Burma. She's 60 years old today. Now, when the band Adam and the Ants broke up, the Ants went and formed. Bow Wow Wow. Then they got 13-year-old Annabella to sing lead for them.
54 That was in 1980. Then they broke up, got back together, broke up. So she just went solo. Then they got back together with a different lead singer. Well, she didn't like that, so now she started her own version of Bow Wow Wow. So there's actually two Bow Wow Wows out there. So if you go to Bow Wow Wow, that's the guys from the band. Or you can go to Annabelle's Bow Wow Wow, and that's with her singing. I'd rather go with the singer. As a beastie boy. He was known as Ad-Rock. He was born Adam Horowitz in New York City. He's also 60 years old.
45 Adam, he started out in the punk band, it was called The Young and the Useless. Now, they would open up for the Beastie Boys. Then in 1982, the Beastie Boys had an opening, so they picked Ad-Rock. They hit pretty big right after he joined them, too. Sold over 50 million records. Now, when Adam Yock died in 2012, yeah, the Beastie Boys decided not to replace him. They just didn't want to go on without him, so they called their quits. Ad-Rock's first wife was actress Ione Skye for seven years. Then he married his second wife in 2006. Now, the name Robert Van Winkle, that doesn't sound like a hardcore rapper. So I changed it to Vanilla Ice. 59 years old today. He was born in Dallas, Texas.
42 You know, he started out as a professional motocross racer, and then he broke his ankle. So, as he was recovering, he got really big into hip-hop. So, he quit motocross and went into music. His song, Ice Ice Baby, was the first hip-hop song to go number one. Now, he tours quite a bit, and he does all those Love the 90s tours and that kind of stuff. He had two daughters from his first wife. He has one child with his second wife. Let's go. Let's go. That was Lynn Berggren singing lead for Ace of Base. She's 56, born in Gothenburg, Sweden. She helped form Ace of Base in 1987. They took their name from a Motorhead song, Ace of Spades. Some of their hits are All That She Wants, The Sign, Don't Turn Around, Beautiful Life. Sold over 50 million records. That makes them third most successful artist in Sweden of all time. They're behind ABBA and Roxette. In 2007, Lynn, she dropped out of the band. Lynn, she basically dropped out of life.
49 She did not want anything to do with anyone or anything at that time, so she just went off and did her own thing. Now, she still talks to her sister, and she tells her sister that she is living a great life as a recluse, and she's perfectly happy. It's good for Lynn. Okay, let's talk a little more about Halloween. The number one selling Halloween candy of all time is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. You know what the number one selling candy of all time is, though? 14:42 It's awesome. I love Don. This is her song, One Love Fits All. You guys have an awesome day. We'll talk tomorrow. What if bullies didn't prey on the small and the weak? Bullets weren't a way for the evil to speak. And nobody ever had a need or reason to run. What if thoughts didn't matter and looks didn't mean everything?
25 Maybe hearts wouldn't. If hate didn't put down dreams. How bad does it have to get how many have to fall. Before we make this. World where one love fits all but if we all accepted each other's ways reached out and respected each other's fate wonder how many lives we could What if grace was the future and greed was the past? Hope was a given and hurt didn't last.
