0:19 Hello, I am Jeff, and welcome to History and Factoids About Today. Today's September the 11th. Have you forgotten how it felt that day to see. Your homeland under fire and her people blown away? Have you forgotten when those towers fell, we had neighbors still inside going through a little? It has been 25 years since that horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center's the Pentagon in Flight 93. Now, it's not because we don't care. Of course, our thoughts and prayers go out with all those affected by the Islamic terrorist attacks. And we definitely do not want to forget those who were killed and their families. But there is just so much coverage of it going on today.

1:09 And a lot of it's going to be better than what we could do. So we're going to just give you a break from the 9-11 coverage today and just talk about what else happened on September the 11th. Let's start off in entertainment. See what happened on September 11th in 2017. Number one album was Science Fiction by Brand New. Louis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Justin Bieber. They had the number one song with Despacito. Sam Hunt had the number one country song with Body Like a Back Road.

1:51 The number one movie was Kingsman, The Golden Circle. The Kingsmen, their headquarters are destroyed. Now a secret U.S. spy agency teams up with them to go after a common enemy. They did it. Stars Taron Eberton, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong. Let's see what happened on September the 11th. In 1503, Michelangelo began sculpting the Twelve Apostles. Yeah, for the cathedral on Flores. Now the oversized marble statues would be of Jesus' apostles. So why haven't you heard of it? Well, only one of them, that's St. Matthew, was partially finished. Yeah, Michelangelo, he got a little too busy Casimir Polanski, he was a Polish army officer, got into a little trouble over there in Poland. Not only was he kicked out of the Polish army, he was told to leave Poland and never come back. So he came to the United States.

2:56 He joined a fight for the American independence against Britain. He formed the United States Cavalry. So they made him a general. Then today in 1777, it was at the Battle of Brandywine out there in Pennsylvania. The British were just kicking the United States butt big time. Everything seemed lost. Then at the last second, Polanski, he showed up in his horse, he rode in, grabbed General George Washington and got him out of the battle and into safety. So, pretty impressive, huh? Not a lot said about the Polish cavalry officer saving George Washington's life. Well, see, at the time, they thought it made George sound weak, so they didn't want it out there. Now, when you think about the presidential cabinet, you know, the members, kind of, I think of them anyway as a bunch of, like, yes guys, who just kind of do whatever the president wants. Well, in 1841, President John Tyler, he vetoed a banking bill.

3:43 His entire cabinet, except for the Secretary of State, they resigned in protest. Now, he never said he was sorry, and they never came back to work. So, now, who do you think, who would you agree with this? I mean, Congress and the cabinet, they wanted to create the Fed, you know, the Federal Reserve. Well, Tyler, he didn't want that. So, I know the Federal Reserve has been in the news a lot lately, and I'm saying, well, he vetoed it in 1841. Yeah, well, the Federal Reserve, it actually did become law in 1913 under Wilson. Get this. One year later, Wilson said he kind of regretted signing it ever since. Yeah, as soon as he signed it. So that's how the Federal Reserve came to be. Kind of a boring topic, but hey. Let's do some car racing. In Wisconsin in 1903, the Milwaukee Mile race tracker opened up. First race, William Jones, he won the five-mile race. So I guess it must have been five laps around. Today, the Milwaukee Mile, yeah, it's the oldest speedway in the world. 1909, a German astronomer, his name was Max Wolf. He discovered a comet. He was so proud of himself. He was telling everybody. He was bragging to the media all about it. Finally, the other astronomers got together and said, hey, dumbass, that's Halley's Comet. 1939, the British submarine Triton. It torpedoed and sank the British submarine Oxley. They didn't let that out until after World War II was over. 1941, construction began on the Pentagon.

5:00 Look at this. It was completed by January 1943. Yeah, the world's largest office building. Not the tallest, the biggest. It's like 6.6 million square feet. But a building over in India, it's going to be bigger. It's going to be like 7 million square feet. Probably a call center. Japan's prime minister for most of their part in World War II was Hideki Tojo. In 1945, he attempted to commit suicide to keep from having to go on trial for war crimes. Now, he was at his house. The U.S. Army soldiers, they surrounded him. As they were getting ready to go in and arrest him, they heard a gunshot. So they broke down his door and raced inside. And there he was, standing in the hallway, holding a gun, bleeding from a chest wound. And he screamed out, I am Tojo. Then he just collapsed right there in the hall. So the soldiers, they picked him up. They moved him to a couch. They went and got a doctor. Now they were able to save his life. Tojo, he was hung for war crimes three years later. 1970, all the cool kids. Now they were a really even cooler. Yeah, the Ford Pinto went on sale. Cost two grand. Now that would be $ 16, 600 today. Now get this, the average price for a new car today is $ 48, 000. So would you spend $ 16, 600 for a brand new car, even if the gas tank might explode? I don't know, pretty good deal.

6:12 Now a lot of these kids probably drove for it, Pintos. 1977, the Atari video game system went on sale, $ 199. Now you had eight different games you could buy, but the game Combat, it came with the system when you bought it. 1978, Birmingham, England, Janet Parker. She was the last person to die from smallpox. She actually caught it in a laboratory. Now, we forget about this one, sadly. Yeah, this was a really bad day, too. In 2012, the United Embassy out there in Maghazi, Libya, it was stormed, looted, and burned. Yeah, five Americans were killed, including the ambassador. The cover-up really makes it sickening. 2023, a Vincent Van Gogh painting that he painted in 1884 had been stolen. It got returned today. Yeah, in an Ikea bag. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, shawty.

That was Jimmy Davis. He was born in Jackson Parish, Louisiana in 1899. Now he served as Louisiana's governor from 1944 to 1948, then 1960 to 1964. See, in Louisiana at that time, you couldn't serve back-to-back terms as governors.

7:47 You had to take a break in between. So when Jimmy wasn't governing, he was playing country music. He's even in the country music hall of fame. He had four number one songs. 26 other songs went in the top 10. Now that song that I played, You Are My Sunshine, it is ranked in the top 100 country songs of all time. He had a son from his first wife. She was his wife for his first two terms as governor. Yeah, and then she died in 1967. So he married a gospel singer in 1969. They were together until Jimmy died in 2000 at 101 years old. The lead singer for the Buckinghams was Dennis Tufano. He's 80 years old. He was born in Chicago. Now the Buckinghams, they were pretty big in the late 60s. Now, everybody in the band was actually American. They named themselves the Buckinghams, and they wanted to sound British. You know, with that British invasion going on over here, they said, you know, let's sound British.

8:54 What the hell? Well, their hits were Kind of a Drag, You Don't Care, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Hey Baby, they're playing our song. Now, the Buckinghams, they were pretty much done by 1970. Dennis, he got married for the first time, 2021. So, yeah, you can do the math. Actress Amy Madigan is 76. She was born in Chicago in 1950. In the early 1970s, she was in a band. So to promote it, she posed for pictures for Playboy. She was wearing only jelly. Yep, just jelly. That was covering her body. See, the band was called Jelly. Well, it didn't really work, so she went into acting. She played Kevin Costner's wife in the movie Feel the Dreams. Then she was nominated for an Oscar for twice in a lifetime. She was also in Streets of Fire, Uncle Buck. In 1983, she married actor Ed Harris. They have a daughter. As a joke, do you think Ed's friends kind of leave bars of jelly around his house?

9:43 Is it any wonder? That was Tommy Shaw singing for the band Styx. Tommy, 73. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama. Yeah, he's mostly known for playing his guitar. Yeah, Dennis DeYoung, he sang most of the big Styx songs and all that. But Tommy, he did get to sing on Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Fooling Yourself. Now, Tommy, he's still with Styx. Dennis DeYoung, he's not. And they're out on tour, well, pretty much the beginning of December, if you want to go see Styx. Tommy, he was also in the all-star band Damn Yankees. He had a daughter from a second wife, married his third wife in 2000. Actress Virginia Madsen was born in Chicago, and she's 65. Her first movie was Class, then Dune, Candyman, The Rainmaker. She was nominated for an Oscar for Sideways.

10:44 She dated actor Antonio Zimbardo Jr. for five years. They had a son. Then she married her second husband in 2020. Retired actress Christy McNichol is 64. Now, she was born in Los Angeles in 1962. She first got known on the TV show Family. Then later on, she was on the sitcom Empty Nest. Her first starring role in a movie was in Little Darlings. I don't know what she was, 12 or something like that. Then Only When I Laugh, The Forgotten One. But by 2000, because she started acting so young, she was pretty burned out. She didn't want to do acting anymore. So she just retired. Now, she's come out as gay. She said she's lived with her partner since the early 1990s. It had to be you.

Started playing the piano when he was three years old. Started playing the piano in public. Five years old. At nine years old, he was playing the piano for the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. Now, Carl Reiner, he approached him and wanted him to write some songs for the movie When Harry Met Sally. So that's what got Harry Connick Jr. really famous. It had to be you. Let's call the whole thing off. I don't get around much anymore. Yeah, some of those songs that he wrote for Reiner. He's had 10 number one jazz albums. Nobody else has been able to pull that one off. Now, he's done some acting, too.

12:16 Some of the movies he's been in were Memphis Belle, Independence Day, Hope Floats, the Dolphin Tale movies. He married model Jill Goodacre in 1994, and they have three daughters. Actress Taraji P. Henson is 56. She's born in Washington, D.C. She first hit on the TV show Person of Interest, then she went over and hit even bigger on Empire. Some of her movies are The Four Brothers, Crowdy Kid, Baby Boy. She was nominated for an Oscar for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Now, she had a son from her high school sweetheart. You know I got it. If you want to come get it, stand next to this money like this. Shake, shake, shake your money and make. Like you were shaking it for some pay. Took your mama nine months to make. Might as well shake what your mama gave. You looking good in them jeans. I bet you look even better with me.

13:08 Rapper Ludacris. He was born in Champaign, Illinois in 1977. 49-year-old started rapping when he was nine. Some of his biggest hits are Stand Up, Money Maker, Runaway Love, Move Bitch. That's a writing song. Now, he acts. Yep, he's played Tej Parker in all those Fast and the Furious movies. He's also been in Fred Claus, New Year's Eve, The Ride. Now, he had two daughters from two different girlfriends, and he got married in 2014, and they also have two daughters. And I said I wouldn't call But I'm a little drunk And. I need you now And. I don't.

13:55 Well, along with Hillary Scott, Charles Kelly sings lead for the country's Lady A. Charles is 45. He was born in Augusta, Georgia. Now, him and Hillary and Dave Haywood, they formed the Lady A in 2006. Some of their number one songs are I Run To You, Need You Now, Just A Kiss, Bartender. Now, they're doing a Christmas tour, yep, starting on December 5th to the 23rd. They're basically going to do a show every day. It's usually down south somewhere, but if you're down there, hey, why not check that out? It'll be kind of fun. Charles got married in 2009, and they have a son. All righty. Today, let's end with Sandy Dahl. Her husband, Jason Dahl, he was a pilot of that Flight 93 that went down there in Pennsylvania.
