0:19 Hello, I am Jeff and welcome to History and Factoids about today. Today is September the 13th. Today is National Bald is Beautiful Day. I hear you, brother. Today is a reminder that everyone is beautiful. Yeah, whether you have hair or not. Now baldness, it does cause a lot of anxiety, not just in men. It causes even more in women. Now baldness, it's genetic. It's not like you did something wrong. So today they do have products, though, that can actually stop it or sometimes even reverse it if you want to take that option. The best bald story of all times. It comes from the Old Testament.

1:10 The prophet Elijah. He was being teased by a group of Philistine kids. Yeah, about his bald head. They were really giving him a hard time, really sticking it to him. So he cursed him. Then a bear came out and killed all 42 of them. So think about that the next time you make fun of a bald guy. Nowadays, though, the sticking of baldness is not as much as it used to be. Yeah, there's been so many famous cromedones. It just kind of ruins it together. Today, it's actually about really encouraging those who are bald for medical reasons, you know, like those going through chemo and that kind of stuff. So if you can, go out of your way today and help them and make sure that they know that they truly are beautiful and worthy today. So yeah, help those guys out. Let's see what was going on in entertainment on September the 13th back in 1957. Number one album was Loving You by Elvis Presley. Paul Anka had the number one song with Diana.

2:49 Moyer. The top movie was Fire Down Below. Robert Mitchum and Jack Lemmon, they're small-time conmen. Bet they go to battle with each other. Yeah, they're fighting over the love of Rita Hayworth. It was today, in 1969, at a Toronto rock and roll festival that a rock tradition began. The host, Kim Fowles, she asked the crowd to hold up their lighters during a ballad. That's how it started. Of course, today, everybody just holds up their phones. Now, it was also in 1969, a day that Scooby-Doo, Where Are You premiered on TV. Yeah, it was on primetime on CBS. All right, what happened on September the 13th? 1847, in the Mexican-American War, United States Marines under Winfield Scott, they were able to capture Mexico City. That's why the first line of the Marine hymn, that song, yeah, it starts off with the halls of Mount Izuma.

3:35 Yeah, it's from that battle. 1861, the first naval battle of civil war was fought. It was off of Pensacola, Florida. The Union ship, the Colorado, sank the Judah. France in 1906, this Brazilian guy, Alberto Santos Dumont, he made the first airplane flight in Europe. Well, sort of. See, he attached his plane to a hydrogen balloon and that, yeah, I had to help him out with the takeoff. So basically the balloon took his plane up and then dropped him. Yeah, then he was able to fly after that. Switzerland in 1955, George de Mistral, he invented what today we call Velcro. Now, he came up with the idea of Velcro when he was trying to get burrs out of his dog's coat.

4:30 1977, the TV show Soap. It became the first TV show to ever have viewer discretionary warning attached to it. Now, diesel engines, they have always been in trucks ever since they started out. Today, in 1978, General Motors, they started selling the first car with a diesel engine, Oldsmobile 88. Now, if you're old enough, you may read diesel gas. It's always been cheap as gas you could get. Yeah, when you would go, but now, not since 2004. Since then, when you go gas up, if you look at the sign, you see that diesel is a lot more expensive. So why? Well, taxes. Yep. And taxes and regulation. It has nothing to do with the processing, actually making diesels cheaper than regular gas. United States President Jimmy Carter, he was a big fan of country singer Willie Nelson. 1980, Carter, he invited Willie to put on a show at the South Line of the White House.

5:14 Well, Willie did. He came over and put on a show. Now, everyone just had a great time. Willie, he even sang a duet with the First Lady, Rosalind Carter. That night after the show, Willie went to the roof of the White House with one of Carter's sons. They fired up a marijuana cigarette. Willie called it a big fat Austin torpedo. For some reason, the Secret Service got a little pissed from it. Then when word leaked out about it, Carter, he said that he had no idea what those two were doing up there on the roof. That's what you call plausible deniability. Let's just see. I was born on September the 13th. Milton Hershey. He was born in Derry Township, Pennsylvania in 1857. He started out with a really successful caramel company. He had over 1300 employees and he working in two different factories.

6:11 Hershey, though, he believed that chocolate would be even more successful, but not just any chocolate, milk chocolate. So he sold the Carmel Company for about a million bucks. That was a lot of money back then. So he bought a whole bunch of land northwest of Land Cancer, Pennsylvania. See, he needed a lot of cows, yeah, for all that milk, for his milk chocolate. So then he built the factory, and he built a town for the employees to live in. Of course, you know it as Hershey, Pennsylvania. So he was ready to go. You know, he had one problem, though. No one had ever made milk chocolate. See, in Europe, they had used powdered milk in their chocolate, but no one had ever actually used real milk to make milk chocolate. No, no recipe existed at all. Now, the factory was built. The town was built. The cows were ready. Workers were hired. No recipe for the chocolate.

6:51 He had hired a whole bunch of Ivy League chemists to try and figure it out, but they couldn't do it. Finally, just one of his former employees was able to figure it out. So that recipe is still used. Yep, today. And the first Hershey's chocolate bar went on sale in 1900. Milton, he married in 1898. She died in 1915. Milton, he died in 1945 at 88 years old from pneumonia. So what kind of. Student do you think that old Milton Hershey was in school? Well, it's kind of hard to tell. See, he left school in fourth grade.

7:34 Kentucky, keep on shining. That was the father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe. He was born near Rosen, Kentucky in 1911. Now, he was a mandolin player, and he had a band. They were called the Bluegrass Boys. Now, no one had ever heard the type of music they were playing before. So when people would sound like them, everybody just referred to it as bluegrass. Bill is in the Country Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he's in the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, obviously. He performed from 1927 to 1996. Now, he played at the White House for four different presidents. I don't know if he ever went on the roof, though. Now, when he died in 1996, he was married, 84 years old, and he died from a stroke. Fell his hands, broke my heart in two. You held my dreams like worthless grains of sand. Careless hands don't care when dreams slip through.

8:31 That was the Velvet Fog, Meltor May. He was born in Chicago in 1925. He was a crooner, but I guess you could kind of call him a jazz singer also. Released 34 albums. His biggest success was in the late 40s through the early 50s. Then he had a really big resurgence. Yeah, he was popular again in the 1980s and early 1990s. Now, his biggest hit he ever had was actually a Christmas song. It was called Chestnest Roasting on an Open Fire. He had two children from his first wife, one child from his second wife, two children from his third wife. Married his fourth wife in 1985. Mel, he died from a stroke in 1999 at 73 years old. Actress Jacqueline Bessette. She's 82. She's born in Waybridge, England. She first got famous in the James Bond movie Casino Royale.

9:12 She played Giovanna Goodthighs. Then she was in Bullet, Airport, The Deep, Class, Wild Orchid. Now, she didn't have any kids herself, but she is Angelina Jolie's godmother. That was Peter Cetera. He's also 82. He was born in Chicago. Peter, he started out in the band The Exceptions. He left them to go to the band Chicago. 1967. Now, Chicago, they kind of rotated.

9:55 They got a single lead. But actually, the way it worked out, Peter, yeah, he sang most of their hits. If You Leave Me Now, Big Surprise, Old Days, Hard to Say I'm Sorry. That's just some of them. Went solo in 1985. Kind of ticked off the guys from Chicago, so they weren't getting along at all. Then they got inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so they had to suck it up and be friends for one night. So then when they went to perform, they wouldn't let Peter sing with them. Now some of Peter's solo hits are Gloria Love, One Good Woman, The Next Time I Fall. That was with Amy Grant. Peter had a daughter from his first wife and a daughter from his second wife. Now Peter, he retired in 2019, so you can't even go see him if you want to. Actress Jean Smart. She was born in Seattle in 1951.

10:35 Makes her 75 today. She's done a lot of Broadway, made some movies, most known for TV. She starred on Designing Women. Then she had a recurring role on Frasier. She voiced on Kim Possible. She's been on something called Hacks since 2021. Her husband, he died a couple years ago after 34 years of marriage. They have two sons. You gotta love it. Where else can you hear?

11:17 Bluegrass, Mel Torme, and Megadeth all in five minutes. Dave Mustaine, he sings lead for Megadeth. Dave is 65. He's going to La Mesa, California. Started out with the band Metallica. You guys all know that probably. Yeah, it was a short run. They ended up kicking him out. They kicked him out. He formed Megadeth in 1983. Worked out well, though. Sold over 50 million albums. 2017, Megadeth, they won a Grammy for the best heavy metal band. Now, Dave, he had throat cancer, but he beat it in 2019. So way to go, Dave. Now, he got married in 1991, and they have one son and one daughter. Filmmaker, actor, writer, producer, director. Tyler Perry is 57. He was born in New Orleans in 1969. Now, he started out just renting theaters and putting on his own plays in them. Now, he has a 330-acre studio complex with 12 sound stages. That is actually bigger than Disney's movie lot. Tyler, he first really hit big with Medea, the Medea character. I think they've done 14 Medea movies. On TV, he hit huge with The House of Pain. Now, he has worked on 16 different TV series.

12:17 Not acted. I mean, he's been like the producer and writer and all that kind of stuff. Some of the movies where Tyler, he just acted were Star Trek, Alex Cross, and Advice. Tyler has one son.
