19 Hi everyone, I am Jeff, and welcome to History and Factoids About Today, presented by Cool Media. Today's September the 25th. Today is National One-Hit Wonder Day. Woo-hoo! One-Hit Wonders, that can happen in every aspect of life, but today it's all about the music. Now, everyone has their own list of their top one-hit wonders. Yeah, we didn't agree with any of them, so we made up our own list. Now, we're going to play clips of our top 10 one-hit wonders throughout the show. As you can tell, we start off at number 10 with Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang. Okay, let's see what's going on in entertainment on September the 25th back in 2019. Number one album was Hollywood's Bleeding by Post Malone. Lizzo had the number one song with Truth Hurts. Blanco Brown. He had the number one country song with The Get Up.

48 The number one movie was The Abominable. A Yeti. He needs three teenagers to help him get back to his family. He's been hunted by a zoologist and also a rich guy. Voiced by Chloe Bennett, Albert Tsai, and Tenzing Norgay, trainer. Tenzing, yeah, his grandfather was Tenzing Norgay, the mountain climber who climbed Mount Everest for the first time with Edmund Hillary. You know I'm not our number nine one hit wonder stacy's mom by fountains of wayne all right what happened in the world on september the 25th 1513 spanish explorer vasco nunez de baboa he landed on the atlantic side of panama Now Balboa and 190 of his men decided to take a hike. Today, after 25 days of hiking through jungle and swamps and crossing rivers, became the first Europeans to see the Pacific Ocean. So how did Balboa know where to cross, where the distance

18 between the Atlantic and the Pacific was the shortest? Communication error. See, when Balboa and his men started hiking, they had some native guides. They wanted them to show them where they could find gold. The guides thought they wanted to show them how they could cross the land bridge. In 1690 in Boston, Benjamin Harris, he published the first newspaper in the American colonies called The Public Occurrence. Now, after that first issue hit the streets, the governor of Massachusetts, he didn't like it at all. He didn't want anybody writing about what he was doing. So he had that paper shut down. So Benjamin Harris, not only did he have the first newspaper, yeah, the first one that got shut down too. I guess he had that right. 1789, the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution was submitted to the states for ratification. Came back two years later, ratified. 1844, Canada beat the United States by 23 runs in their first North American cricket match. United States decided cricket was a stupid sport and we haven't played it since. 1878, a British doctor named Charles Drysdale. He had a letter printed in the London Times newspaper. It was the first time ever that anybody warned and got the health benefits or the health trouble with smoking. Yeah, nobody believed the guy.

23 World War I in 1915 in France, the Battle of Luz was fought. Great Britain, they responded to Germany when Germany used chemical weapons. So Great Britain, they launched a bunch of chlorine gas. But the wind blew the chlorine back onto the British troops, resulting in 59,000 British casualties and 26,000 German casualties. 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, he suffered a physical breakdown in Pueblo, Colorado, basically had a stroke. His health never recovered at all, but his wife hid it for the rest of his term. 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor. She was sworn in as the first woman United States Supreme Court Justice. 1983, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher is Bob Forsh. He threw a no-hitter against the Montreal Expos. That was payback for that cricket game.

04 I get no doubt. I'm not getting old again. Good to have you, though. How many of you actually know that tub thumping is actually the name of that Chumbawoma song? Well, we have it at number eight. All right, let's go do some birthdays.

47 All righty, who all was born on September the 25th? Well, we'll start off with Barbara Walters. She was born in Boston in 1929. 1976, she became the first woman to anchor a network newscast. Barbara, though, she's most known for all her TV specials. She interviewed everybody, politicians, heads of state, entertainers, athletes, any public figure. Her most watched special was in 1999 when she interviewed Monica Lewinsky. Now, that is still the most watched interview in TV history. 74 million people watched it. Now, after 65 years of groundbreaking journalism, Barbara, she ruined it all. Yeah, she created a TV show called The View. Barbara, she had one daughter from her second husband. She married her third husband twice, but neither one of them stuck. See, Barb died in 2022 at 93 years old. Actor Michael Douglas, he's 82 years old today. He was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1944. His dad was famous actor Kirk Douglas.

38 Michael made a name for himself, though, when he produced the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Yeah, got a Best Picture Oscar for it. He won a Best Acting Oscar for Wall Street. Douglas, he had one son from his first wife. Married his second wife in 2000. They have a son and a daughter. She is actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is 57 years old today. Yeah, she was born on September the 25th also. But in 1969 in Swansea, Wales. Now, she won her Oscar for the movie Chicago. She really hit in the movie Mask of Zorro, then Entrapment, Traffic, America's Sweethearts, Ocean's 12th. Now, you can tell that she's just a cool girl, though. Before she got married to Michael, it was around 1995, the British tabloids, they were just following her around relentlessly. So finally, she came out publicly and just said, I drink, I swear, and I like sex. What else do you want from me? Well, that was the end of the story. Now, if you're wondering how two actors 25 years apart in age got together, well, they were introduced by Danny DeVito. Cheryl Tiggs is 79.

33 She's born in Breckenridge, Minnesota. She's considered America's first supermodel. Her blue bikini poster back in 1978, it was a worldwide bestseller. She was the first model on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. She's on the first two covers, actually. Cheryl, she's divorced four times. She had a son from her third husband and twin boys from her fourth husband. Now, she is a very successful businesswoman. Back in 1980, she was the first model to go retail. She launched a signature line of clothing and accessories. Throughout the 80s, it sold $ 1 billion worth of goods. All right, how many of you know Jenny's number better than your own? We have Tommy Two-Tones, Jenny8675309 as our number seven. Actor Anson Williams is 77. He was born in Los Angeles.

36 Best known for playing Patsy Weber on the TV show Happy Days. Now, he has had a very successful career as a TV director. Some shows he's directed are Melrose Place, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Lizzie McGuire, Beverly Hills 90210. He had one child from his first marriage, married his second wife 31 years before they divorced, and they had four kids. Married his third wife just last year. Yeah, it's been a long, long time. You're such a sage, you're looking bad. We can't stop this burning desire. Here we go again.

19 Donny Iris with Aaliyah come in at number six. Sounds kind of funny. Donny and his co-writer, they wanted to write an anti-war song. Now they wrote all that music and everything for the song. It was all down and laid it out and everything. They could not come up with any anti-war lyrics. Donny one day was at a store and he met a girl named Aaliyah. Ended up writing a one-hit wonder about Aaliyah instead of anti-war. Actor Mark Hamill. He was born in Oakland, California. He's 75. Mark hit very big in his very first movie. He played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Had a pretty good run playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. He was also in the movies Corvette Summer and Big Red One. He is currently filming a Stephen King horror movie. Markey married a dental hygienist in 1978 and they have two sons and one daughter. All right, what are you thinking so far? Does Tony Basil and Mickey sound right about number five? I think so. Actor Christopher Reeve, he was born in New York City in 1952. Best known for playing Superman. Played Superman in the first four movies. He was also in the movie Somewhere in Time, Death Trap, The Aviator. 1995, Reeve was thrown from a horse in an equestrian competition. Broke his neck, ended up paralyzed from the shoulders down. He had a son and a daughter from an ex-girlfriend. Then he married in 1992 and they had a son. Reeves, he died in 2004 at 52

53 years old. They think it was from a bad reaction to a medicine that they were giving him. Once I ran to you Now I run from you This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you Take my tears and that's not nearly all Tainted love Tainted. Love I thought Soft Cell and Tainted Love was too high for number four, but I lost. But I did get the number one song, so I got that coming up. Heather Locklear is 65. She was born in Los Angeles. Best known for TV. First started out on Dynasty, then TJ Hooker, Spin City, Melrose Place. Heather, she loves those rockers.

37 Her first husband was Tommy Lee, the drummer for Motley Crue. Second husband was Richie Sambora, the guitarist for Bon Jovi. They had a daughter. Now, Heather, she says she is currently sober. We hope so. She's had a hard time of it. She has received treatment for alcohol and drug addiction 20 times, so hopefully it takes this time. When you're gonna give me some time.

18 In 1979, My Sharona was the number one song of the year. Now we have the knack at number three for top one hit wonders. Actor, rapper Will Smith. He was born in Philadelphia. He's 58 today. Started out as a rapper. He teamed up and they were Jazzy Jazz, Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Then he went into acting. He first starred out on the sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His movies have made $ 9 billion. He's got those Men in Black movies, Bad Boys movies, Independence Day. He was nominated for Oscars for Ali and Pursuit of Happiness. Won an Oscar for King Richard. He had a son from his first wife. Then he married Jada Pinkett in 1997, and they have a son and a daughter. Now, most one-hit. Wonder lists have Los Del Rio and Macarena at number one.

17 I wouldn't do it. Nope, I couldn't do it. I think there is only one song that every person on the planet knows by the first four words. I like big butts and I cannot lie. You other brothers can't deny that when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face, you get sprung. Wanna pull up tough cause you notice that butt was stuffed. Deep in the jeans she's wearing. I'm hooked and I can't stop staring. Oh baby, I wanna get whipped up and take your picture. My whole voice tried to warn me but that butt you got makes me so horny. The number one one-hit wonder of all time, Sir Mix-a-Clos Baby got back. Now I'm sure most of you are probably going to disagree with our list. You shouldn't, but I get it. Maybe next year we'll do like a contest and have everybody vote on it or something. Well, thanks for being here and listening today. We sure appreciate it.

04 If you can't follow us on whoever you're listening to us on, come see us at coolmedia.com. Let's end with golf legend Arnold Palmer. He died today in 2016 at 87 years old. Arnold says, the most rewarding things that you do in life are often the things you don't think you can do. Our country underground radio artist of the day. It comes from Mindy in Portland, Maine. She wants to hear the Jody Ross song, I Was Yours. Hope you guys have an awesome day and we'll talk tomorrow. I still think about that Friday night In your back, see nothing on the street light We were falling so hard, so fast Crazy, I thought we would last Well, you said we had to end But you and I.

51 Could always be friends And you act like everything's fine. That's a lie Cause how do we walk away When there never was an us anyway And how do you. Break A heart that wasn't yours to break guitar. Solo Swore it all meant something to you So I cling to your words like the gospel truth I guess I could pretend you don't exist But what would that even fix? Cause how do we walk away when.

51 A heart that wasn't yours to break. I remember every touch, every kiss. I close my eyes and I can picture it. Staring into each other's souls. How do you break a heart that wasn't yours to break?
