0:19 Hey, hello, I'm Jeff, and welcome to History and Factoids About Today. Today's September the 28th. I'm not the type to work in a bank. I'm no good. Slapping on bank. Don't have a knack for making motors crank, no. But I'm pretty good at drinking beer. Today is National Drink Beer Day. Yeah! Today, it's kind of a why not day. I mean, why should everybody drink beer on September 28th? Why not? It's about the whole reason for the holiday. What state do you think drinks the most beer? That'd be North Dakota.

1:00 The average North Dakotan drinks around 45.8 gallons of beer every year. New Hampshire is behind them. Now, Utah, they need to step it up. They're way behind in last place. The average Utahan, they only drink 12 gallons of beer every year. About 10 and a half cans make up a gallon of beer. Now, what city do you think drinks the most beer? Well, that'd be Green Bay, Wisconsin. Now, beer is the third most drank beverage in the world. It's behind water and tea. Let's check out what happened to entertainment on September 28th. Let's go back to 1990. Number one album was Please Hammer, Don't Hurt Him by M.C. Hammer. Wilson Phillips had the number one song with Release Me. Now that you're gone, I can't help myself from wondering It'll come down from your heart. But within a while, release me.

2:54 All right, what happened on September the 28th? 1542, Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, him and his men, they sailed into San Diego Bay. Yeah, they were the first Europeans to actually land on the West Coast. They named it San Miguel. Well, the Spanish, they renamed it San Diego in 1602. The American Revolution in 1781. 9,000 American and 7,000 French soldiers began the siege on Yorktown in Virginia. Now it was pretty much Britain's last stand. Now, spoiler alert, the Brits, they're going to surrender on October 19th. Yeah, that's the last major battle of the revolution, pretty much end of the war. 1785, in France, 16-year-old Napoleon Bonaparte, he graduated from their elite military academy, École Militaire. Now, Napoleon, he was 42nd in the class of 51. 1850, the United States Navy, they abolished flogging as a form of punishment. Flogging, it's kind of like whipping, but it's actually designed to cause more pain. They have kind of like metal tips on the end of the whip, so yeah. I'm assuming they actually got rid of whipping, too. China in 1887, they had built a series of dikes to try and control the Yellow River. Well, one dike failed. That led to another dike fail and another dike fail. The owl failed.

4:07 Flooded 50,000 square miles. Killed over 900,000 people. Well, that they know of. They think it could have killed up to about 2 million people. Now, not counting Noah's flood, that was the second worst flood in human history. The worst flood, it was also in China in 1931. That one killed over 4 million people. Now on 5th Street in New York City in 1904, cute little Jeannie Lasher. She was arrested for smoking a cigarette. That's right, Jeannie, she got 30 days in jail for it. Well, she'd gotten lippy with the cops when she got arrested. Plus, Jeannie knew better. Women weren't allowed to smoke in public. You know, they weren't even allowed to vote for another 15 years. 1924, two Army planes, they ended their around-the-world fight.

4:48 They flew from Seattle, Washington, all the way around the world to Seattle, Washington. Made 57 stops along the way. In 1928, Wormat's Gully Jumpers, they became the first to record a record in Nashville, Tennessee. 2008, SpaceX, it launched the first private spacecraft to orbit the Earth, pretty much. They call that Falcon 1. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, shawty. It's your birthday. We're going to party like it's your birthday. We're going to sip a card like it's your birthday. And you know we don't give up because it's your birthday. Well, let's see. He was born on September the 28th. Ed Sullivan. He was born in Harlem, New York in 1901. Ed, he started out as a syndicated entertainment writer, but then he moved to TV and hosted the Ed Sullivan Show from 1948 to 1971. Now it's on every Sunday night from 8 to 9 Eastern Time. But nowadays, it's really hard for us to really grasp how big and influential the Ed Sullivan Show was. Everybody wanted to be on the show and everybody watched the show. Now, if he let you perform on his show, yep, then you knew you made it. Ed, he married in 1930. Now, him and his wife, they were in such demand to be guests at dinner parties that not only did they have dinner with all the entertainment bigwigs, they actually had dinner with presidents and the Pope. They had one daughter. His wife died in March of 1973. Ed died in October of 1973. He had esophageal cancer. He was 73 years old.

6:16 That was country singer Tommy Collins. He was born in Bethany, Oklahoma in 1930. Now he was pretty popular in the late fifties, all the way up to the early seventies. He was one of the original founders of that Bakersfield country music sound that came out there. Now, some of his hits were what you're going to do now. It tickles. If you can't bark, don't growl. Tommy died in 2000 at 69 years old.

7:02 You can smile. Every smile for the man who held your hand. But don't fall. That was Benny King singing the only number one song the Drifters had. Yeah, save the last dance for me. Ben, he was born in Henderson, North Carolina in 1938. He joined the Drifters in 1958. Some of the Drifters songs that he sang late on were There Goes My Baby, The Magic Moment, Count the Tears. Now, he went solo as fast as he could. It was only a couple years before he got famous enough to go solo. Hit huge with the song Stand By Me and Spanish Harlem, Don't Play Our Songs. Now, over 400 artists over the years have recorded the song Stand By Me. Pretty much everybody from Bruce Springsteen to Mick Jagger to Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, everybody's recorded Paisley's Stand By Me. Ben, yep, his song is still the number one version of Stand By Me. The number two version of Stand By Me was in 1988, and it was Benny King, too. But he did it with Def Leppard. He performed right up until he died in 2015 at 76 years old. He had a short illness and then he died. Actor Jeffrey Jones is 80. He was born in Buffalo, New York.

8:26 He played the principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He's also on Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October. Now, he's had a lot of legal issues. Yeah, he actually, I'm not going to go into all of them. He has to register as a sex offender. Janine Garofalo, she was born in Newton, New Jersey in 1964. She's 62. Started out doing stand-up. Well, she still does. She's a really good stand-up comedian. She still performs. If she's not coming on tour, she posts stuff on YouTube. Yeah, she still does a good job. Been in over 50 movies. Reality Bites, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, The Matchmaker, Copland. Now, she married from 1991 to 2012. She didn't know it. No. Heard a guy got drunk in Vegas and did it as a joke. Thought it was over. Went their own separate ways. Well, the guy eventually went to get married, and surprise! Yeah.

9:14 You know what? That is probably the best 20-year marriage of all time. Never had a fight, no argument or anything like that. Now, once they found out they were married, they probably exchanged words. Janine, she has been sober since 2001, so that's really cool for her. Actress Mira Servino. She was born in New York City in 1967. Makes her 59. Her dad was actor Paul Servino. Mira, she won an Oscar for Mighty Aphrodite. Then she got snubbed big time, yeah, for the movie Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Didn't win anything for it. And she's in The Replacement Killers, At First Sight, Summer of Sam. She married in 2004, and they have two sons and two daughters. Actress Naomi Watts. She's 58. She's born in Shoreham, England. Her dad, he was the road manager and sound manager for the band Pink Floyd. She was in the movies Tank Girl, Children of the Corn 4, and Babe, Pig in the City. That's how she started off her career. Of course, she didn't get nominated for any awards. Then she got nominated for a couple Oscars.

10:11 She was nominated for 21 Grams and The Impossible. I've not been sarcastic. I honestly think her best movie was King Kong in 2005. Yeah, of all the King Kong movies, that's the best one. Now, she had two sons from a boyfriend. She married actor Billy Crudup in 2023. You know a woman's cool when she's talking about day drinking.

10:52 That was Karen Fairchild. She sings for that country group Little Big Town. She was born in Gary, Indiana. 57-year-old, grew up in Georgia, though. Marietta, to be more specific. Now, she is the brunette in Little Big Town. She outformed it in 1998. Some hits that she sings are Pontoon, Better Man, Day Drinking, Girl Crush. Now, Little Big Town, they're out playing some shows right now. I don't know if I'd call it a tour, but they're doing some shows anyway. Karen, she married Jimmy Westbrook in 2006. He's one of the guys in the group, too. They have a son. Let the rain fall down and wake my dreams. Let it wash away my sanity. Because I want to feel the thunder on that screen.

She was six years old, and then she really got famous playing Lizzie McGuire on TV and in the movies, like Cody Banks and that kind of stuff. Some of her other movies were Casper Meets Wendy, Cheaper by the Dozen, A Cinderella Story. Now, Hillary, she had a son from her first husband. She married her second husband in 2019, and they have three daughters. All righty, our quote of the day comes from writer Herman Melville. Yeah, he's the guy who wrote Moby Dick.
