National Days Puzzles - July

Grace & Grit Christian Country Radio

18 Well, hi, I am Jeff, and welcome to History and Fact Toys About Today, presented by Cool Media. Today's September the 30th. Today is National Chewing Gum Day. Woo-hoo! In 2007, archaeologists found the oldest piece of chewing gum that they knew of. Found it near Karakiki, Finland. Dates back 5,000 years. It even had teeth marks in it. Now, it was made from bark tar. So that means that people have been chewing gum for a long time. Now, the chewing gum that we know, it started in about the mid-1800s. Now, originally, chewing gum, it started out, it was all natural. Yeah, today, there's nothing natural about chewing gum.

11 But it is good for reducing stress, helps you lose weight, quit tobacco, good for cleaning your teeth and freshening your breath. Now, I'm not saying you need it, but hey, choose some gum today. Four out of five kids recommend it. So, what happened in entertainment on September 30th back in 1970? Well, the number one album was Cosmos Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Diana Ross had the number one song with Ain't No Mountain High Enough. The killer Jerry Lee Lewis had the number one country song. There must be more to love than this.

02 And on my lips I can taste your goodnight. Kiss In my room the fragrance of your perfume. Lingers And I know there must be more to love than. This That number one selling book was Love Story by Eric Segal. Top movie was Tora Tora Tora. It's all about Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. Stars Jason Robards, Sue Yamamura, and Martin Balsam. All right, what happened on September the 30th? Well, I think we all know that in every community they have that one family. Yeah, I think you know what I'm talking about. Well, in 1630 in Plymouth, that one family was the Billington. John Billington, he had come over on the Mayflower, and his whole family was constantly doing something to piss off the pilgrims. Now, his wife, she was even sentenced to the stocks and had to be whipped for slander. Well, the pilgrims, they finally had enough today. Yep, they hung John. Yeah, he was the first criminal executed here by Europeans in America. So what'd he do? He murdered his neighbor. 1659 in New Netherlands. Now that colony, it covered what today is New York, Delaware, New Jersey, parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Connecticut. So New Netherlands, they outlawed playing tennis during religious services. 1841, Samuel Slocum, he invented the stapler. 1946, American dentist William Morton, he became

34 the first to use the anesthetic ether. Yeah, he used it to pull a guy's tooth. It went so well that every dentist started using ether. Then, of course, it spread to other operations. 1941, at the Babi Yar ravine over there near Kiev in the Ukraine. Over two days, Nazis shot to death or buried alive 33,771 Jews. 1942, U.S. Admiral Chester Nimitz, he was on a B-17 airplane being taken to the Battle of Guadalcanal. Well, the pilots got lost, but not just lost. They got hopelessly lost. Well, the tail gunner, he was in the back. He was reading a magazine. He gave the pilots that magazine. Yep, allowed them to find out where they were, and they took them straight to Guadalcanal. How was that? Oh, they just followed the maps that were printed in the National Geographic magazine.

15 Hey kids, what time is it? It was a very sad day today in 1960. Howdy Doody aired his very last episodes. Yeah, that kid's show had been on the air since 1947. 2,554 episodes. But....

06 That night, the Flintstones made their TV debut. First animated primetime TV show ever. Now, I'll take the Flintstones over Howdy Doody. All right, let's check out who was born on. September the 30th. That was drummer Buddy Rich. He was born in New York City in 1917. He's considered possibly the best drummer of all time. Never took a lesson, started drumming at two years old. 1930s, he was the second highest paid child entertainer in the world. Yep, he was behind Shirley Temple. 1937, got a jazz band, and then he went into the big orchestras and all that kind of stuff. He married a showgirl in 1953. They had a daughter. Buddy, he was on tour in 1987 when he died from a brain tumor at 69 years old.

21 Actress Angie Dickinson is 95. She was born in Combe, North Dakota in 1931. Acted from 1954 to 2009. Made over 50 movies. Some were Gun the Man Down, Real Bravo, Ocean's Eleven, The Killers. Now, she really hit big on TV. She starred in Police Woman. Her second husband was songwriter Burt Baccarat. They were married for 15 years. When they divorced, they had a daughter. Chances are Chances are you think that I'm in love with you.

04 Johnny Mathis is 91 years old today. He was born in Gilmer, Texas in 1935. He still tours. He's released 73 albums. 60 of them have gone either gold or platinum. Sold over 360 million records. That puts him third all time behind Elvis and Michael Jackson. He's sung pop, Spanish, soul, R & B, show tunes, blues, country, soft rock. Some of his hits are Not For Me To Say, Chances Are, Certain Kind of Smile, Twelfth and New. Johnny, he hasn't married yet. That's probably because he's gay. Why do fools fall in love? Why do birds sing so gay? Love is my way to save the day.

44 Why do they fall in love? Why? That was Frankie Lyman singing. He was born in Harlem, New York in 1942. He sang lead for the Teenagers. Now, they were the first integrated group. Yeah, when they formed in 1954, they had three black members and two Puerto Ricans. That's integration. Now, once they hit, though, they got so huge, they changed the name, though. Then it was Frankie Lyman and the Teenagers. Now, 14-year-old Frankie, he was singing that song, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, on the TV show Big Beat. He danced with a white girl from the audience. People went bat crap crazy. That show ended up getting canceled for that. Some of their other hits are I Want You to Be My Girl, ABC's Love, Goody Goody. Now, Frankie, he started getting so hot, he ditched the teenagers. He went solo. Yeah, bad call. That didn't work out at all.

33 Frankie died from a heroin overdose in 1968 at 25 years old. Country singer Debra Allen, 73. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Started out as a teenage beauty queen, and she went into country music. Some of her hits are Oh, How I Miss You Tonight, Baby, I Lied, I've Been Wrong Before. She's had a lot of success as a songwriter, too. She's written her own hit songs, and she wrote hits for Janie Frankie, and John Coley, Patti Loveless, Tanya Tucker. Just some of them. She still performs.

22 She's been married to her second husband for over 20 years. Rocker Barry Williams is 72. He was born in Santa Monica, California. Of course, he's best known for playing Greg Brady on the Brady Bunch. Really got himself typecast there. But they did a lot of specials. That kind of worked out. You know, in some of the last specials they did, he was Dr. Greg Breen. Now, Barry, yeah. two children from his second wife married his third wife in 2017 now back in 2002 in britain i think y'all know who singer peter gabriel is he wrote a song called barry williams show now after his album was released they were told hey there's an american actor named barry williams well peter he was a good sport he flew barry over to england and had him star in the video Actress Fran Drescher. She was born in Queens, New York.

21 She's 69. Most known for starring on the sitcom The Nanny. She had small roles in Saturday Night Fever, Dr. Detroit. This is Spinal Tap. She voiced Eunice in all those Hotel Transylvania movies. Now, she started dating her future husband back in high school. Yep, they were 15 years old. They were so in love, they married at 21 years old. Then they divorced at 42. Turns out the guy was gay. Fran, she's a 20-year cancer survivor, though, so that's really cool. Come from Mississippi and down in Alabama Creeping like a fever all across the land From deep in the Delta on the Louisiana shore The people got to have it, they want to. Hear some forest So he'll give it rock, beat it with a drum Playing guitars like shooting.

05 From a gun Country singer Marty Stewart is 68. He was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Started out in a band for Lester Flats, and then he went into Johnny Cash's band. Got his own record deal in the 1980s. Started over 30 songs. Some of his big ones are Hillbilly Rock, Western Girls, Cry, Cry, Cry, Tempted. His first wife was Johnny Cash's sister, or his daughter, Cindy. Now, they were married for five years. Then in 1997, he married country singer Connie Smith. Actress Jenna Elfman. She was born in Los Angeles. She's 55 today. She really hit starring on TV's Dharma and Greg. Yeah, she was Dharma. She was on Fear of the Walking Dead from 2018 to 2023. Some of her movies are Ed TV, Keeping the Faith, Friends with Benefits. She married in 1995, and they have two children. That'd be rapper T-Pain. T-Pain is 42 years old.

All right, sure. What do you guys think? Have an awesome day and we'll talk tomorrow. Sunrise through the windowpane Coffee brewing my sweet refrain But something new Buzz a little dead My heart's a drum Steady beat Tapping at a rhythm So sweet. All this love's a fire Burning higher and higher Could warm my soul Could torch my home I don't know if our love will roam Your smile would spark a tiny flame.

07 Whispering my secret name. My world, it spins a dizzy whirl. Will you be. My forever girl? My heart's a drum, a steady beat, tapping out a rhythm so sweet. Oh, this. I don't know if our love will roam Before I even knew your name I wondered If it would go up in flames It started strong with lots of heat Posted in fruit
