0:15 Hi, I am Jeff, and thanks for joining us on Let's Win Your Beer, the companion podcast of the History and Factoids About Today podcast. Now, we are not here to save the world. We're just here to literally help you win a beer or help you win a conversation stalls and turn south and you have nothing to talk about, all right, let's just get to it. The hashtag everyone, they've become familiar with it, dude, is social media. It is officially called the octothorpe. Now, growing up, we call it the pound sign or the number sign at least dur in the United States and Canada. Over in Brittany and Europe they called it the hash octathorpe, though it's just a made up word. In nineteen sixty eight, scientists at Bill Laboratories they added it to the telephone when the telephone started going from rotary dial to push buttons, so they added the octathorpe and the star button. They did it to allow access to telephone computer systems. That's why it's still on the number pad today. Now. Since there wasn't a name for it, the sciences came up with octo because of it had eight ends, and then they added thorpe. Well, just because it sounded cool.

1:11 That's how he got octall thorpe. Computer programmers in the nineteen seventies started using the sign the octoport, but they called it a hash Chris Messina, he was the first to use the hashtag, used it in two thousand and seven on Twitter. He tweeted his fellow his followers ask him if anyone would like to use the pound symbol to help make it easier to follow conversations about specific topics. Well, the hashtag it was often running. Today, the hashtag is universal on all social media. Now you can win a beer by saying the hashtag is officially called the octal thorpe within another bear the fact that the octa thorpe was just a made up word. All right, let's go for nerds, let's go the golf guys. Any guesses how long a golf tee can be? Four inches? Yeah, golf te officially cannot be longer than four inches. Most popular golf tees, though, are two point seventy five three point twenty five inches, But you can use any t size as long as it's under that four inches. Pros they easily use two te's one for woods, and then one for a shorter one for irons. Now, the head of a golf tea, it can't be any bigger than point four to four inches. Now, if you've under wondered, no, there's absolutely no difference between a plastic or wooden golf tee. Plastic teas they just last slumber.

2:20 Actually, this will win you another beer. A plastic golf tea takes four to fifty years to decompose. Give me back my freedom, Let me live this line and drive. See if we're not harming any one would give you a sorty. All right, we're gonna end with our stupid lave of the day, So let's go to Portugal. Now, in Portugal, it is illegal to pee in the ocean. I'm not sure how they catch you if you're out there swimming, but okay, now, if they do catch you, you can wind up in jail or have to pay a fine. Now I'm guessing the reasoning is that being in the ocean would contaminate it. Wow, that is factually untrue. Human urine does not harm the ocean or sea life in any way. In fact, scientists say that it actually is beneficial to marine life. Well, thank you for being here now. Don't forget to follow us, I know.
